I have done some research on the Klugs who came from Germany in the 1870s. They migrated to US and settled in Caledonia in southeastern Minnesota and all raised large families. klugdale@juno.com

My Pallas line comes from Poland/Russia, depending on what time period you look at. I know a (Jan) John Pallas (b.~1858) went to Cuyahoga, OH. John was married to Henryka Bart. He is definitely linked to my line! His father was Frederyk.
If this fits into your line, or you know of anyone who's line it may fit into, please contact me at momdotts@aol.com

Thank you!

NY State Supreme Court Case - Equity Term 1900

I'm am trying to find out the details of a case involving my gr.gr.grandpa, Jacob Klug. There is a case of him vs. Margaret Stone - also known as Margaret Harrison (my gr.gr.grandma). There are a few other men involved. The lawyer was George Raines and it went before James W. Dunwell. I can only get bits and pieces from scanned newspaper articles. I pretty much know my gr.gr.grandpa lost, but I'd like to know the details. Any idea how I'd find it?

Thanks!
Kim

Hi,
I'm Dale Crane-George and Alice are my grandparents. I just started doing a family tree and came across your posting.
My father is Ervin the oldest of the siblings. I only saw my grandfather once on his deathbed at my Uncle Wesley's house when I was very young.
My father told me he had a very poor upbringing, and that after his mother died (he was only 15) his father made him quit school to help support the other children. He never said his father left but he did say he was a drunk, so the younger children probably stayed with other people.
If you pull up our family tree I have put a picture of George and Alice that my father had.
If I have any other information that will help you don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Dale Crane

Klug-Winter Family - Pommern>NY>WI

Hi,

I am looking to find any information on the following children. I have been able to trace the family to the mid 1850s but then the children disappear. I do not know if they died, moved elsewhere in Wiscosnin, or moved out of Wisconsin.

Parents:

Wilhelm August Klug - b. 17 Jul 1813 (or 1816) in Muddelmow, Kreis Regenwalde, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia d. 08 Aug 1844 in Kirchhayn, Jackson Township, Washington County, Wisconsin Territory. Buried in David's Star Lutheran cemetery in Kirchhayn.

Caroline Friederike Winter - 24 Oct 1812 in Marquardsmühl, Kreis Cammin, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia d. 31 Jan 1870 in Sherman Township, Sheboygan County, WI. Buried in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Sherman Township, Sheboygan County, WI.

They married on 12 Sep 1834 in the Evangelical church, Rottnow, Kreis Greifenberg, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia. The family emigrated in 1839 arriving in New York harbor aboard the ship "Britannia" on 05 Sep. The family continued on to Buffalo, NY. The family lived in Portage, Livingston County, New York (when he worked on the Genesee Canal) and in Buffalo, NY from 1839-1842/3. The family then moved to Wisconsin where it is assumed they lived in the Freistadt area. After Wilhelm August Klug died, Caroline Friederike Klug nee Winter married Christian Friedrich Sell on 09 Jun 1846 at Trinity Lutheran church, Freistadt, Mequon Township, Washington County, Wisconsin Territory. In the early to mid 1850s the Sell/Winter/Klug family moved to Abbott Township (now Sherman Township), Sheboygan County, WI.

Children:

1) Wilhelm Friedrich August Winter b. 08 Apr 1834 in Rottnow, Kreis Greifenberg, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia. He is the illegitimate son of Caroline Friederike Winter. The baptism entry does not state the father's name. His future stepfather, Wilhelm August Klug, is listed as a baptism sponsor. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran church in Freistadt on 06 Jun 1847, the confirmation entry uses the surname Klug. He is found in the 1850 census living with his 2nd stepfather, his mother and siblings in Mequon Township. This is the last entry I have found for this child. It is not known if he went by the surname Klug or Winter as an adult.

2) Gottlieb Christoph Klug b. 24 Jul 1835 in Muddelmow, Kreis Regenwalde, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran church in Freistadt on 18 Jun 1848. He is found in the 1850 census living with his stepfather, mother and siblings in Mequon Township. This is the last entry I have found for this child.

3) Johann Ernst Heinrich Klug b. 24 Oct 1836 in Muddelmow, Kreis Regenwalde, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia d. 19 Aug 1839 aboard the ship while crossing the Atlantic Ocean. He was buried at sea.

4) Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Klug b. 04 Jul 1838 in Gramenzer Busch, Kreis Neustettin, Province of Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia d. 10 Oct 1839 in Buffalo, NY. He is buried in Buffalo.

5) Friedrich Wilhelm Klug b. 20 Nov 1840 in Portage Township, Livingston County, NY. He is found in the 1850 census living with his stepfather, mother and siblings in Mequon Township. He was confirmed at David's Star Lutheran church in Kirchhayn on 29 Apr 1855. He is recorded taking Communion at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Abbott Township, Sheboygan County, WI in 1855 (the exact date is not recorded, but must have occured after his confirmation). This is the last entry I have found for this child.

6) Caroline Maria Wilhelmine Klug b. 08 Sep 1842 in Buffalo, Erie County, NY. She is found in the 1850 census living with her stepfather, mother and siblings in Mequon Township. This is the last entry I have found for this child.

Any information on the four children that were living in 1850 would be greatly appreciated.

Tom

Johann Lüder Scheele died in 1836 and his wife was remarried, in 1841, to Johann Philipp Lesche.

That gives us all three names mentioned as your Catharina's maiden name.

Schala - Scheele
Gettmann/Geltmann - Giltmann
Lay-shay - Lesche

It looks like your genealogist has access to more German records and he may be able to go further with this.

By the way, my maternal grandmother's mother was a Gerken.
Other family names are Meyer, Mahnke, Gathmann, Dankers, Dehnbostel, Hahn, Buchhop, Wittenberg, Gödecke and Schwiebert.

Just a thought -

I have in my Visselhövede database an Anna Catharina Maria Scheele b. 19 Jan 1835 (bap.26 Jan 1835, Conf. 1849) to Johann Lüder Scheele and Anna Catharina Giltmann. This could just be coincidence but it seems too close to let go.

T.

Most of my family came from the area around Visselhövede and Neuenkirchen. I have been researching them for over 10 years and have access to the Visselhövede church records at the LDS Family History Library near my home.

I am not related to the Klugs but since most of the Germans in Henry County, Ohio have some connection to Visselhövede I decided to try to transcribe the records and then possibly donate them to the Henry County Genealogical Society. It is taking forever. The records I have access to only go through 1852. I have gotten from 1818 through 1838. I searched from 1847 through 1852 and could not find a marriage record for Henry and Catharine.

In your GGG grandfather Christoph's marriage record in 1826 it records that his father, Henry's grandfather lived in Verden and Christoph's wife was from Walsrode. Have you checked to see if they may have moved to one of those locations? You might also try searching in the civil records in Rotenburg am Wümme.

Do you know where Henry and Catharine attended church after they immigrated here? I found the hometowns of some of my ancestors in the old American church records. Some churches even keep copies of obituaries that may record the place of birth or maiden name. None of the names you listed for Catharine are familiar to me, or show up in the Visselhövede records, or any other records I have searched, so she was probably not from the area.

I also find it interesting that Maria Reuter Klug Behrmann gave her maiden name in the 1880 Federal census.

Good Luck. Let me know if I can be of any more help to you.

Lori, I corresponded with you a year ago or so. Recently, I realized that my Klugs come from the same area that yours originally do - Berent/Gross Klinsch/Schonberg (all part of Karthaus/Carthaus), West Prussia, in the same time period. I'm sure that we are related; it's just a question of how closely. Mine, you may recall, came to St. Clair County, Michigan and Detroit, Michigan in about 1868. My earliest known Klug (that came to Michigan) was Friedrich Wilhelm Klug/Kluge/Kluck, born about 1822 in the Schonberg area. He married Luise/Louise Mau/Muhall. Let's keep in touch . . . .

Hi my name is Kristen and it is said that my Great, Great, Great Grandmother Grandmother is an orphoned Shawnee indian girl, she was born in Virginia (now West Virginia) but I would love to find info on her adopted Mother, and her adopted Mother name was Catherine Klug.

Catherine Klug was married at least three times, all of her husband's died. Catherine first husband was Joseph Reinhart, they got married in 1839 and they had four children: Margaret, John, George, Francis. Joseph died around 1844. Her 2nd Husband was Nicholas Heck they got married on Jan 27,1845. Then on September 16, 1848 Catherine and Nicholas (Klug) Heck adopted my Great, Great, Great Grandmother Mary Gertrude (Heck) Stegmaier, then sometime after September 16, 1848, her 2nd husband Nicholas Heck died, then she re-married for the 3rd time to Joseph Holzinger on Jul 15, 1851. The 1850 census she was listed as a widow and living at Patterson's Creek, VA near Cumberland probably at Nicholas Heck brother's John house.
I would love to know the names of Catherine Klugs parents and if she had any Brother's or Sister's. I think Catherine was born in Germany or Prussia. Thanks to who might know.

In a baptismal record for one of my Hinrich's brother's (Hermann Christoph Friedrich born 8 Dec 1834) there was a godparent named Hermann Friedrich Scheel. I have always wondered about that Scheel surname.

Now with what you mention I think that must definitely be a connection. Can you tell me what church that Anna Catharina Maria Scheele was baptised in ? I am wondering how I would find her marriage? Is that in your database as well? Thanks so much for this information.

I think you told me that the records only went up to 1852? Is that right? My Hinrich and Catharina's children were born from 1854 thru 1873 and then they immigrated and had 2 more children. My genealogist said he would have expected to find their confirmations in church records of where they lived, but he didn't find them in Visselhövede.

Hi Terry,

Yes, that is the same family! Johann Hinrich Ludwig Klug (b. Aug 1, 1827) is my great great grandfather. He was called "Henry". How is it that you were transcribing those church records? How did you get access to them? Were you in Visselhoevede?

By the way, I dearly would like to find a record of Henry's marriage to a Catharina/Catrina around 1853/1854. She was born Jan 18, 1836 but I am not sure in what city. Their first child was Johann Kort Heinrich Klug (b. Nov 2, 1854)and they had 7 more children before they emigrated to America in 1873.

My geneaolgist thought it didn't seem that Henry and Catharina were married or living in Visselhoevede. So I wonder where else they could have been. They sailed from Hamburg when they emigrated. All my family records have them indicating Hannover as their origin but I know that is not specific and could mean a region not a city. I believe the geneolgist tried to search in Hannover City and found nothing.

Part of my problem is that there is a confusion over what Catharina's maiden name was. It could have been Schala, Gettmann, or even something like Taysha/Jaysha.

Terry,

In case you can help me figure this out let me explain that Catharina Klug (wife of my Johann Hinrich Ludewig Klug) was listed as having the maiden name "Schala" on 3 of her children's marriage records which were around 1880-1895 time period in Michigan. Then on one son's obitutary in 1915 it stated that his mother Catharina's maiden name was Gettmann/Geltmann. Further confusion is that in my notes passed down within the family someone writes that Cahtarina's maiden name was pronounced "Lay-Shay" but spelled something like "Taysha" or "Jaysha".

At first my genealogist thought her surname would have been Gettmann or Gathmann and he said he found one Catharina Sophia Margaretha Gathmann born 7 Dec 1830 who attended school in Visselhövede, and was confirmed in 1845. That person doesn't match the birthdate of my Catharina (18 Jan 1836) however.

I am not really sure what to think. Of course mispellings in records are very possible. The Taysha/Jaysha name could have come from misreading old script. Perhaps that was her middle given name and not her maiden name at all.

Also I know that my Johann Hinrich Ludewig (Henry) was a master baker after his father died. It would seem common sense to me that he would have just inherited the business after his father Christoph died and that he would have been in Visselhövede. We know that he was living with his step mother Maria Rueter after the death of his father for a while. Yet apparently no confirmation records are found for his children there.

Here are the sources that my genealogist used:

-	Kaufmann, Jens Th. (ed.): Niedersächsische Trauregister (marriage records) – Cel-ler Land, vol. 1 : from the beginnings up to the year 1700, Burgwedel 1998, Braun-schweig 1999-2006
-	Lutheran church records of Kirchboitzen 1655-1875, Verden, St. Johannis 1659-1885, Visselhövede 1793-1852 and Walsrode 1669- 1875 (all microfilmed at the Lutheran Church Records’ Office in Hannover)
-	Online-Ortsfamilienbuch Bremen und Vegesack
-	Ritter, Jürgen (ed.): Garnison-Kirchenbuch Hannover 1816–1867, 2 vols, Hannover 1995-1996
-	www.familysearch.org
Yes, I found that quite interesting that Maria Reuter gave her maiden name in the census of 1880. It really helped give me a clue, so I am glad. My researcher told me that Maria Reuter petitioned to run an Inn/Tavern in 1842 in Visselhövede. I know that my Johann Hinrich Ludewig had a fight with his step father and Johann Hinrich Ludewig was thrown down a stairway and suffered a broken back. To heal they tied him in a chair for most of a year and his back became permanently bent over. Yet he still was able to win the heart of Catharina (the most beautiful girl in Hannover).

Regarding my Klug Line:

ggg grandfather:
Hermann Christoph Klug, born in Verden 3 May 1785 and registered in the St. Johannis Church on 4 May. He was a master baker. He married Sophie Catharine Wilhelmine Freudenthal in VisselhOvede on 31 Oct 1826. She died of tuberculosis 27 Sept 1838. His second wife was Juliane Maria Reuter married 19 Feb 1839. She was born in Neunenkirchen about 1806.
---------------------------------------------------
His father was Johann Heinrich Klug born Walsrode 7 March 1754, he was a master glass maker in Verden. He married Catharina Dorothea Ecks on 12 May 1775 in Verden, St Johannis Church.
---------------------------------------------------
His father was Johann Georg Henirch Klug, born in Regnitzlosau, Bavaria about 1725-30. He died about 1780-92. He was a master carpenter in Walsrode. He married on 3 Jan 1754 in Walsrode, Hannover to Elenora Agnesa Söder (born 19 Apr 1721 in Kirchboitzen, Hannover).
---------------------------------------------------
His Father was Johann Georg Klug who died after 1754 in Regnitzlosau, Bavaria. He was a master carpenter.
---------------------------------------------------

I have pages of notes that mention many families who were related or god parents. What names are you researching?

By the way as a side note, When my gg grandfather Johann Hinrich Ludewig Klug shows up on the 1880 Census in Michigan the Ancestry.com site translated his surname as "King" in the database, so that took some time of scrolling through the original handwritten pages to find it myself. However, living with him were his wife, 9 children and also a family from Hannover named Gerken, or Gerherken. I have seen that surname in the baptismal records some where too. I don't know what happened to them later.

I am really very thrilled.

How did you obtain your database from Visselhövede?

Did your Gerken family end up in Ohio ? There was a Herman Gerken and family living in with my Hinrich Klug in Sherman Twp. Huron Co. in 1880. I did not see what happened to the Gerken family as they didn't seem to continue in Huron Co. They were also from Hannover.

However a half brother and step mother did immigrate to Henry Co. OH. If you go through this thread you will see that Terry gives some info on them.

Our Klugs originated in Visselhoevede, Hannover, Germany !

Klug Family

I am looking for any family member of Johas Klugas and Elizabeta Augustaicis. I am told they lived or came from Lithuania. They had 6 boys I'm told. Some came to the US in the 1900's. Some to Canada and some to the US. I have the birth place as Vistytis, Lithuania. I am not sure who was born there. Maybe the parents. And some of the children. The fathers name I am told was John in some case's. Could have been spelled Klug. That is how I spell it now.
Russia is also another place of residence I have. If any one has any thoughts on this, I would really like to hear from them. Thanks for the time.

Try www.worldcat.org. Search for New York State Supreme Court cases. See what libraries near you have the resultant books. If a nearby library doesn't, ask your public librarian if you can get books via InterLibrary Loan.

OR, even faster: Contact the New York Historical Society at www.nyhistory.org and ask for help.
