wow... its been a while since i last thought to look at this... for what its worth. RESPONSE to BKT... It was my understandind that Alexander Payson Knapp Senior, Founder of USG& G Insurance , Baltimore / who had a magnificent home at 10 Club Road, Roland Park, MD had three Sons, by first mariage... Emma McDonald, they were...
Alexenader Payson(jr), Marshall Thomas (named after Chief Justice Marshall, family friend) and Raleigh Colston (family name of their mother) There was a dreadfull divorce, reason unknown, however articles since uploaded on line from the Baltimore Sun and NY Times... scandelous at the time.
APK Senior went on to marry two more times. Next to an heir of PPG glass from Pittsburgh, whose first name was Dorothy (and whom my grandmother refered to as "mother dorothy") and they had more children. Alexander Marris, Harry and one more, whom I cannot remember. Marriage again ended in divorce. He married a third time... woman unknown, but who he was married to at the time of his death in 1929 at age 59. And whom my grandgather APK jr referred to as "the bitch".. so funny. By then they had sold the "big house" in Roland Park and moved to and very nice one in Bethesda... and summered in Jamestown RD. where he died of a heart attack on the front porch.
Most intersting the way APK Senior developed the family Trust. By where only blood (men) could have access to the capital principal, and the wives could only have control over the interest generated by the trust, thus inevitably ensuring its longevity to blood Knapp heirs only... to which I may say very humbly... I am a third generation and greatfull recipiant...

I am trying to locate any information on my great grandfather. I have his death certificate and have tracked him from 1880 US Census on, but nothing before. Believe I found him in 1870 in Milwaukee, WI but nothing to prove it is him.

According to 2 different US census- he immigrated either in 1849 or 1851 from Hesse Darmstadt. Death certificate says father was George Knapp and unknown mother. He was Catholic as he was buried in a Catholic cemetery in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.

born in Hesse Darmstadt 14 April 1840 or born April 1842
Married Maria Catherine Schmitz born 9 Jan 1850 in Prussia - Believe in area of Cologne (Koln), Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany which was part of Prussia at that time.

All their children were born in Wisconsin so believe they met most likely in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Looking for location of birth, date of birth, parents, and any further info that could be provided

Re: Information needed for family of MARY ELIZABETH KNAPP

An update for e-mail address:
Pearl,
I don't know if anyone else has reponded to your query but if not--- I believe that the parents of your Mary Elizabeth Knapp married to Abraham Shuman are Peter Knapp and Joannah Kiser(Keiser)/Knapp. This info comes from the Bible of Barbara Lewis/Knapp wife of Nelson Allison Knapp a brother of Mary Elizabeths. Other siblings are oldest to youngest: Harriet, Mark, Ann/Effie, Henry W., Nathan, (Nelson & Mary Eliz. are next in line), then Peter, JR. (my gggrandfather) and finally David. According to census records Peter Sr. was born in NY and Joannah in NJ. It is supposed that Peter Sr.'s father was a Jacob Knapp but I have been unable to find any connection. Peter Jr. and wife are buried in Marcy cemetery in Duryea, PA and other Knapps that are buried there include Zephaniah & son Joseph which would lead you to believe there must be some family connection. My own father always said that his "people" orginally came from Connecticut which that NE corner of PA was one time part of Conneticut. However, I live in Texas and rarely get back to the NE so research is super difficult. Will be happy to share any info I have and hope to hear from you. You can reply to sherrylrclark@comcast.net as well as Rootsweb.
Sherryl

I have a photograph of Alonzo among my family memorabilia.

Alonzo does show up in the 1920 Census with Elizabeth, Clinton, and Donald. Nankin Township, Wayne, Michigan, District 770, Sheet 7B. The street next to their names is Sophia Street.

The WWI Draft Registration Card (dated September 12th, 1918) for Alonzo Lyman Knapp also lists Sophia Street as his permanent address, and Elizabeth Mary Knapp as his nearest relative.

Hope this helps a little.

Looking for descendants of Wm W. KNAPP and Ida T. KNAPP- Earnest, Fred, George, Walter, Robert EL?

I descend from LeRoy Lewis KNAPP, and believe there are no male descendants left alive, so I am hoping to contact one of the "cousins" and persuade you to take the DNA test to prove our lineage from Nicholas KNAPP. Uncle Fred W was born in Michigan in 1876. Uncle Earnest L was born in Michigan in either June 1872 or 1879. Uncle George L was born in Michigan in April, 1888. Uncle Walter E was born in Michigan in June 1890. Uncle Robert E.L. was born in Michigan in November, 1895.

Another couple research points you may be able to help me with: Aurin LITTLEFIELD (Ida's grandfather) is mentioned in a biography as being the son-in-law of a patriot who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill as a youth of 16. Does anyone know the name of this fellow? If we can link ourselves, and I believe I can link us to Aurin(1800-1847) and Betsey(1789-1866) LITTLEFIELD, we are entitled to memebrship in the DAR and SAR, which give very nice amounts of scholarship money out to qualifying members. I would appreciate any help. Also, I have not been able to find links to Meriwether LEWIS, although the middle name Lewis has been used in my line because we ARE SUPPOSED to be related to him. It would be through Mary Ann LEWIS who m. Luke KNAPP sometime around 1830.

Thanks in advance... Kathy

I am one of just a few descendants of a branch of the Knapp family tree that ended up in Massachusetts. I don't know a lot about the family, unfortunately (I had connected some years back with someone doing research, but lost their contact information in a computer meltdown). My grandmother, Thelma (sometimes known as Pam) Knapp Bonner was born in Bennington, VT and I believe her parents were originally from New York (upstate). Thelma was the youngest of three children. The others were Olive (her married name was Rousseau) and Gilbert (never married). Thelma passed away around 1964-1965. Olive passed away in 1975 or 1976 and Gilbert also passed away in the 1970s, although I do not know more precisely when. Would be interested in any information.

Hi Shari. Your grandmother Anna is my great aunt Anne. My grandmother, Katherine(Freeman) is Anna's youngest sister. Martin and Catharina (Kate Kalkman)are my greatgrandmother and greatgrandfather. I knew your grandmotther well. I have a painting that she did before she died. She was living in the nursing home at that time. Some members of the family have been traced back to the 1600's in the Netherlands. If you are interested I could give you a listing of all the Kalkmans that date back to that time.

Hi. I'm from the "Kalkman" line. My Greatgrandmother is Catharina (Kate) who was married to Martin Knapp (Knop). One of their daughters was my grandmother (Katherine). I remember my grandmother talking about an "Aunt Margaret" from Holland. Your grandfather is Warren Knapp. Is his wife's name Dorothy? What are your mother and father's names. Does your family come from Grand Rapids? That's where the Warren Knapp I know is from. His father would be my grandmothers oldest brother. I think he died at 35 or so of cancer. I remember a picture of him in his army uniform.

From what I've found on the internet and this website, Albert H. Knapp married Laura Anna Bean and they had Francis Atherton and Donald Knapp. Francis married Alice Royal McCarthy and had David Atherton Knapp. David has 2 children, Barbara and James Atherton, who is my father. Please reply if you still use this and I can give you some more information. I have just started using this and know next to nothing about the Knapp side of my family.
