Re: Looking for link to George Jackson Kneeland

Hi Laura,

Better late than never. Perhaps you are still active in your searching, though I do hope your curiosity has since been satisfied..

Elizabeth P. Jackson Kneeland was the sister to my gg grandfather, Thomas Jackson. Thomas and his wife Nellie (Mary Ellen) Niles Jackson named their second son Charles Kneeland Jackson b. 11 MAY 1858. Presumably, namesake of Charles W Kneeland, spouse of Elizabeth.

While it is only conjecture, one might suppose that Charles & Elizabeth may have honored one of Elizabeth's brothers in naming their child, George Jackson. I do not know the names of all Elizabeth siblings, and since Jacksons are a dime a dozen in and around Boston, it would take time and patience to try the process of elimination. I tried, but soon tired of it. The job is somewhat easier knowing that Elizabeth's parents, William and Elizabeth Bradmore Jackson were both born in England.

Please let me know if you ever discover the secret , and I shall do likewise.

I know my great grand father was born in Springfield Mass. His name was Eustace Kneeland. He came to Mexico and married Margaret Gettings from New York. They stayed here and grew a big family: 2 sons (James and Eustace) and 1 daughter (Della) 22 grand children and more than 40 great grand children, the only Kneelands in Mexico. Do you think a there might be a connection here?

I just connected some Kneeland's to the Henry Adams of Braintree family.
Rufus H. Kneeland 1920-2003
Karl W. Kneeland 1923-2008
Mary L. Kneeland abt 1919

Let me know if I have any Kneeland cousins out there. If you are descended from any of these individuals, you are cousins to the Adams presidents.
Can I track Irish records on Ancestry?

Hi there -- new person here. I'm trying to track the parents (and beyond) of my ggrandmother, Katherine Kneeland (nee Rourke).

However, it's not readily apparent to me how to search for such information here on Ancestry, even though I've bought the international membership. Can someone help? I'd be SO grateful -- I've been wanting to find my Irish ancestors for my whole life and have only now found time to do the work.

Folks, I don't think I'm on the same family line, but my ggrandmother was a Kneeland by marriage (maiden name Katherine Rourke, born in Ireland). Her husband was Austin B. Kneeland. They, and their 11 children (including my grandmother), spent their whole lives in Worcester. Any connections?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

One more (and hopefully last) time.

Sister Alice and her husband Dell Ray Houchins, along with her son from first marriage George Elliott Degroat, all show in the CA death index. From there, Alice and George can also be found in the SSDI. George's last name is listed as DE-GROAT in the SSDI database.

George's brother, Ben William Degroat, can be found in the TX death index and from there in the SSDI.

Finally, a speculative item. There is a listing in the WWI Draft Index for a Harry B Degroat registering in Leavenworth KS. Seems to me to be a potential first husband to Alice and reason for grandfather Warren H. Kneeland to travel to Leavenworth, KS.
Sister Mae (mother Jimison) is also identifiable in the CA death index and from there in the SSDI. She apparently remarried last to a Bowen (first husband Duling) and died as Mae M. Bowen in 1996. Obit Daily Times lists an obit for her published by the Sacramento Bee on 12/31/1996.

James and his brother Eurvin are both listed in the CA death index (mother Jimison), as well as in the SSDI.

I believe I've also found the death information for their grandfather, Warren H. Kneeland. The National Cemeteries gravesite locator lists a Warren H. Kneeland 3/31/1912 (probably interment date vs actual date of death) at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS with US Army service. SFK had said he lived in El Paso, TX for a while and then had moved to CA. Perhaps it was the Army that took him south to Texas (Mexican-American War). Not clear why he would end up back in KS. Would need to see if the Army or VA has further info (i.e. date of birth) for this Warren H. in order to confirm this match.

Joseph Hartwell Kneeland?

Hello everyone.
I have renewed my family research and seem to have come to a sticking point in my line.
I can trace myself fairly conclusively to Joseph Kneeland b.12 NOV.1752 and Ruth Hartwell b.1757? and from there all the way back to Alexander.
The problem is, I can't seem to find any records of any other children of Joseph and Ruth other than Edward Kneeland b.17 MAR. 1782 in Fitzwilliam,NH. Supposedly he had a brother by the name of Joseph Hartwell Kneeland (from which my line decends) born in 1780, but I have been unable to find mention of him or his children. Of particular importance to me is Don (Carlo)? Kneeland born around 1810-11. There is a portrait of Don Carlo Kneeland in our family, but no information to go along with it.
If anyone can help, my family and I would greatly appreciate it.

~Brian Kneeland

Kneeland Viking Connection?

My mother, in her research in Boston's Historical Library, found some reference to the Kneelands having been Vikings, originally landing (or crashing) on Scotland's coast... Has anyone else found information on this? The earliest mention I've heard is to Alexander Kneeland who purportedly took in his wife's nephew, William Wallace, after being orphaned. I'm more interested in what happened prior to that time than I am to verifying the Wallace connection.

Fannie Kneeland???

Does anyone have a Fannie Kneeland in their research? I am looking for the missing link in my family tree. Several generations of Kneeland as a middle name...probably resulted from a maiden name, so this is a shot in the dark, but I have a Fannie with no known last name. She married George Miller in the New York City area in the 1800s. I believe she was from Scotland. Thanks for any leads!

The Facts:
Ruth HASTINGS married John Brocas [Ward: Family Register of the Inhabitants of the town of Shrewsbury]

Daughter Martha Symmes Brocas (elsewhere recorded as Patty Syms Brocas) married Isaiah Fairbanks Jr. [Shrewsbury, Mass. Brocas” is buried within 10 feet (ostensibly in the family plot) of Mrs. Martha SYMMES widow of John Symmes of Boston [Mountain View Cem., Shrewsbury, Mass.]

Martha Symmes was the daughter of Solomon KNEELAND.

Mary Brocas’s middle name was Kneeland.
Re: irish kneelands

I'm searching Neilon from Ireland. Here's the story.

My great-great grandfather James Neilon (spelled Kneeland in 1870 Collin County, Texas census) was born in Ireland about 1817-1819. His son Edward (my great grandfather) was born in Ireland in 1844. His wife was Sarah Monica Gallagher. They arrived in Boston. The Neilons and James Gallagher, Sarah Gallagher's brother apparently made at least 2 trips from Ireland, probably Connaught province, County Roscommon.

I've searched for the parents of James Neilon and James Gallagher for many years, but until now I didn't catch one strange thing in my information. James Gallagher had several siblings with him in Texas; James Neilon had no siblings in Texas! So I have a strong suspicion that his siblings either remained in Massachusetts possibly moving west later, or they migrated to Canada or Australia in the 1840's.

After the 1870 census in Texas, the Neilon spelling was fairly consistent, but two of James & Sarah's children were born in Mass. (born about 1857 and 1859) and the spelling may have been Kneeland.

I really want to hear from anyone with lost Irish siblings in the Kneeland (Neilon) family, or anyone who suspects a lost relative. Gallagher connection anyone?
Sarah Kneeland

Hello,
I am searching for any information about my gg grandmother Sarah Kneeland. I am actually trying to confirm the research I have done thus far. Sarah kneeland was the daughter of James Hardy Kneeland and Catherine L. Farrel. She was married twice. The first time to a man named George W. Smith and the second time to a man (my gg grandfather) Alfred E. Erb. Together they had 7 children and among them was Charles E. Erb (my g. grandfather). This side of the family has given me problems for a very long time and I cannot seem to make any headway. I have no photos of her but I do have a photo of her headstone that was handed down to me by my grandmother that has Sarah's birth Date as July 11, 1852 and her death date as Feb. 01, 1894. And no, sadly I do not even know where the photo was taken.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Kneeland/Alden connection

I, too, am descended from Joseph Kneeland (1704-1771) and Merriam Averell (1709-1763). I found a marriage record for them:

Topsfield, CT Vital Records.
Neeland, Joseph and Merriam Averell, at Salem, Sept. 17, 1734.

There is an excellent website containing transcriptions of many early Massachusetts vital records; many Kneeland/Neeland/Neland/Nealand birth, marriage and death records are available at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex/VitalRecords/index.html.

I have found numerous references to this Joseph Kneeland's parents as Edward Kneeland (1677-1745) and Mary Alden (1677-1753); and also that this Mary Alden was the daughter of Captain Timothy Alden, who was supposedly the son of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, Mayflower passengers.

It is possible that all the references I have found lead back to Stillman Foster Kneeland's Seven Centuries in the Kneeland Family, in which he states (p. 138):

"[Edward] married Mary, second daughter of Captain Timothy Alden, a fellow-mariner, and son of John Alden and Priscilla. Timothy is not recorded in the 'Alden Memorial,' but the latter does not pretend to give all the children of John Alden. Timothy's will mentions his brother, Capt. John Alden, of Boston, who is known to have been the son of the original John, of the Mayflower."

I have at this point not been able to find a copy or transcription of Timothy's will mentioned above. I have also found no text refuting the claim made by Stillman Foster Kneeland. I have not yet checked the Mayflower Five Generation book for descendants of John Alden (published by the Society of Mayflower Descendants) but intend to within the next few days.

I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone who has further information about the possible connection between the Kneeland and Alden families. I would even like to know if someone has proven there is no connection!

D.M. Kneeland b. 1861 in Orleans County, NY --> Milwaukee -->Grayling & Lewiston, MI

D.M. Kneeland
D. M. Kneeland, the general manager of the Michelson & Hanson Lumber Company, was born in Orleans county, N.Y., in 1861. He moved with his parents to Milwaukee in 1865, worked on a farm, studied in the common schools, in the city schools, and graduated from the Spencerian Business College, of Milwaukee. He began his career as a lumberman by working as a bookkeeper in the office of Mike Ingleman, a lumberman of Milwaukee. In 1882, he came to Grayling to work for Salling, Hanson & Co., at the special request of Mr. Ingleman, who was a member of that firm. Ability brought him promotions, and in 1892 he was elected general manager of the Michelson & Hanson Lumber Co. He at once moved to Lewiston and took control of their new and large plant. Mr. Kneeland is a keen judge of men, a shrewd organizer, possesses exceptional executive ability and is a hard worker. He has had the satisfaction of seeing the firm grow, and their sales increase from a few million to over thirty million feet yearly, and this, too, under depressed business conditions, which have marked the times since ’92. The firm owes its success largely to his energy and ability.
there is a photo included in this newspaper article, and I can provide more information on the history of Lewiston, and the lumber company he worked for.

i have no family connections.
