PIONEER MONTANAN OBSERVES HER 87TH BIRTHDAY; ACTIVE
White Sulphur Springs [Meagher County], Nov. 1. --- Mrs. Rachel Kneen celebrated her eighty-seventh birthday the 23rd and received many tokens of regards. Mr. Kneen possesses a wonderful memory and can relate many incidents of early days, when Indians were keeping the settlers in more or less anxiety.
She came across the plains five times before 1870 and has more memories of wagon-trains and troops than most of the women. She was captured by Confederates in 1860, was shipwrecked, was with the troops when they rounded up the Mormons, in 1859.
The next year she went with her husband to what is now New Mexico, and after the outbreak of the Civil war, they were captured by Confederate troops under Colonel Baily.
They were paroled to the United States, and in 1862 exchanged. Soon after her husband went to the army of the Potomac, serving until peace was declared. Then they left for Florida, and on the Delaware were shipwrecked at St. John's bar. Then on to Fort Bridger, and to Montana, where they settled at Fort Logan.
Mrs. Kneen was born at Porta Ferry Countyy Down, Ireland, and was married there to Samuel Logan, and was 18 years old when they came to America.
Mr. Logan died in 1872 at Fort Shaw. She married James Kneen at Fort Logan. He died in 1913. Mrs. Kneen has several children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, is remarkably active, and takes an active interest in religion, politics and national affairs.
