From 1955 to 1970 my grandparents lived on a farm south of Mulberry, Ks. Down the rode was a family that hardly spoke any english. That woman was a Kness, her husband worked in the coal mines in that area in the 30 and 40's. I should have checked before I got on here but the woman I met last spring remembers my grandparents and she is 93 now. I am guessing she was or couldt be the lady who gave me cookies all the time. I have a friend that watches over her and gets her groceries and I will check with him, but now as this this is on my mind I am not sure if maybe she was a sister to that couple. Her name is Martha Kness. I can find out more as I am going back in that area in two weeks if any one wants. Who knows I may have found some of your lost family
Jim

Hello,

Are you still offering information to those who believe they have ancestors with the last name of Kness?

We have a birth certificate of Catherine O'Connell (1906) which lists her mother's name as Florence Kness. It has been passed down that Florence was from a prominent family in the Philadelphia area. Stories also state that when Florence chose to marry John O'Connell (my grgrandfather a blue-collar sort of chap), her wealthy family gave her an ultimatum... marry him and you will be disowned. She did, but only stayed married long enough to give birth my grandmother Katherine and her two brothers Harold and Leonard. She then got tired of the menial lifestyle and somewhere between 1915 and 1920, left my grgrandfather and returned to the Kness family. Does any of this sound familiar? I have been searching for information on Florence for over a year and would love to know more about her. I would appreciate anything you could tell me.

Jo Rieder Malone
jomeer@comcast.net

Dear Family Historian,

I am descended from Lester Kness (Married to Velma, can't remember her maiden name). He was my grandfather. His children's names are Lee, Kathy, Wade, and Dean. Dean is my father. My mother has compiled a little info on my family tree, but she has not gotten very far. Is it possible that you have more information that pertains to me?? :)

Thanks!

Austin

I am related to a George,Catherine and Caroline Kness. George Kness, born 1815, was married to Catherine and they had Caroline in 1863. George was from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany or Austria. They lived in St. Louis. I do not have any information other than that on them.
Dear Barbara, I just read your query from 2003. Your family is a extended family from mine. But, I, too, am descended down from Martin 1st and Martin 2nd. I am descended down from his son Henry Harrison Kness, who married Elizabeth Moorhead. The Henry, Tim mentioned Henry D.,was son of Geroge Kness. I was wondering if you know if anyone has found out more about Father Kness, who was Martin Kness the 1st father. My address has changed to:
Jana80@charterinternet.com so have not been in touch with anyone for some time. And have slowed down a little from researching. I wish I could help you with your family. Tim can, I know. Good luck with your researching. Jan

The Susanna Kness you mention in your post married Henry Kness according to the Pike County (OH) marriage 1815 - 1915. The record shows Susannah Comer to Henry Kness - Mar 21, 1847. I'm interested to know more, because other Comer family members include my GGGrandmother, Malinda Comer. Here are the Comer's married at the same time and
Elizabeth Comer to Andrew Adwell - Dec 7, 1845
Isaac Comer to Sophia Price - Sept 18, 1845(possibly d/o Hugh & Susan (Wilson) Price; B. 1832 greene co., TN; d. Indiana 1911
Malinda Comer to Larken Monk - Apr 4, 1844

I know that Malinda and Larkin were in Portsmouth OH for a short time, and I have a pretty good record of where there treks to Iowa where my Great Grandfather, Franklin Parker Monk was born. They Frank would move on to Kansas and marry Nora Alice Syphord who had two children already. They added to their family as they made their way through Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and then to Washington.

Any thoughts you have would be great
Tomie Gowdy-Burke
I'm happy to say I've finally gotten somewhere. It turns out that the children of my ancestor Henry Kness were living in the Brough household in 1870. I don't know why as of yet. You mentioned that Benedictine Nagle remarried, well I found her and her Kness children in the 1880 census. Her new husband Julius Strickmiller's surname was spelled Stockemiller, and all of the Kness children held that surname, which is why I had such a hard time finding them. I still don't know anything about Henry Kness, except that he died before 1879, but according to the census Benedictine (mispelled Banna on the census) was born in 1840 in Austria. Thank you for all your help!

my grandmother Iris Inez Cannon was born March 9, 1928 in New Orleans, LA.
Her father was Edward Cannon, and his father was Edward J. Cannon, born jan 7, 1865 in Elmwood Plantation, Plaquemines Parish. Edward J's wife was Elizabeth Kness, born Feb. 14, 1865 in Nestor, Plaquemines, and the two were married on Jan. 1, 1889 in Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Elizabeth Kness's father was Henry Kness, and her mother was Benedictine Nagle born 1840, and died 1905 in New Orleans. They were married on April 26, 1858 in St. Thomas Catholic Church.

More info about Benedictine Nagle's family:
Benedictine had a sister, Josephine, who married Rudolph Waltzer. Their son John Joseph Waltzer married Alice Mary Decker on Jul 1 1896 and John and Alice had a daughter, Olga Isabelle Waltzer who married Joseph Anton Menge.

Benedictine and Josephine may have had another sister named Bernadine b. 1860 who married Julius Strickmiller.

Henry Kness's father was also Henry and his mother's name may have been Mary.

you're right this is very confusing. i see so many names i recognize, but i just can't figure how they fit together. i'm starting to wonder how many henry knesses there were because i know mine was dead by 1930...

GERTRUDE WALTZER born in Plaquemines Parish died Thursday 1-13-1983 at 1:55
pm in Empire aged 91 years; daughter of Joseph Waltzer and Elizabeth Knees;
wife of William F Reussie; mother of William B Reussien; sister of Olga Menge
Andrew Hewitt and Joseph waltzer;

and here it says joseph waltzer and elizabeth kness were married? very tricky. once again all i know about my henry kness was that he was married to benedictine nagle in 1858 in St. Thomas Catholic church. i have another old pedigree sheet from a relative that has the waltzers, menges, and josephine nagle, but where to place henry kness i just don't know.

thank you and don't hesitate to reply if you have any more advice.

Henry Kness Jr. was the son of Henry Kness Sr. and Mary (surname unk). He was married in 1858 in St. Thomas Catholic Church in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, and died in New Orleans. His wife was named Benedictine Nagle, and she died in 1905 in New Orleans, but I don't know much about her either. Their daughter Elizabeth Kness married Edward J. Cannon in 1889 in Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Plaquemines Parish.

ya know, this is so frustrating because this very well could be part of the family, but i have so few records on them, and we have little or no louisiana records at our library. unfortunately, all the relatives i could ask about the kness line are deceased, so...thank you for these census listings though. all i know is that according to the research i recieved, henry's father was named henry, and his mother was named mary (surname unknown).

"St. Thomas the apostle church records that old are kept in the Archdiocese of New Orleans Catholic Church.
They may be included in St. Louis Cathedral Records that were published years ago.
St Bernard Genealogical Society could help you find someone to look up the information at the library and the courthouse."
This info was posted on the Plaquemines, Rootsweb message board.
If it is the Church that I think it is , in Chalmette, St Bernard Parish, It is just a little up river from Plaquemines Parish on the East bank, which is closer to New Orleans, on the same side of the river. Plaquemines Parish is further down river(close to the mouth of the river) on both sides.

I just meant that some of the records could be under different spellings. Lots of typos can make for funny hunting. I found obits under KNEES, easy typo they just hit e twice instead of s, then continued to spell it that way through out the obit. Some of the Census takers and others that would have been creating the records might not have been very educated or when talking to someone that may have had an accent, wrote down what they heard and not the actual spelling( could be spelled without an K).
George Caspar Kness and brother Henry came from Germany to the US in 1858, so it is possible that Henry married soon after, George and Catherine didn't marry, or at least have there marriage recorded until 1869. Down in Plaquemine Parish, back then, they didn't always have a regular priest, that was there all the time, sometimes they only came a couple of times a year or every few months. Alot of people went to New Orleans to get married or just lived under common law until the priest came to them. Also realize that it was several generations later before there was a road with bridges or a train. Most of the traveling had to be done by boat.
thanks...according to one of the papers i recieved it could have been knass, but most of the descendants used kness. i kind of doubt this is the same henry because if henry and george were brothers, henry would be much older...also, if they immigrated in 1861, well, my henry was married in 1858 so....argh!!!

There seems to be more than one Henry Kness. Check for alternate spellings, like Knees, Kniss and others no matter how unlikely. You can bet with those names they married they are at least cousins. Keep in touch, I'd like to campare info.

i've hit a brick wall looking for a henry kness jr. he lived in either new orleans or plaquemines parish. married a benedictine nagle on 26 April 1858 at st. thomas catholic church in either pointe a la heche, plaquemines parish, or new orleans. he had a daughter elizabeth born in plaquemines that married an edward j. cannon in new orleans. i also noticed a gertrude waltzer mentioned. interesting because my henry's wife benedictine had a sister josephine that married a waltzer...i think his name was rudolph.

i am searching for henry kness that was married to a benedictine(a) nagle in st. thomas catholic church in pointe a la heche, plaquemines parish or new orleans on 26 April 1858. all i know about him was that he had a father named henry and a mother named mary (surname unknown). his wife benedictine had a sister named josephine that married a man with the surname decker. henry's child was elizabeth kness b.14 Feb 1865 in Nestor, Plaquemines Parish. elizabeth married an edward j. cannon at emmanuel episcopal church in orleans parish on 1 Jan 1889. apparently elizabeth had sisters, because at the time of marriage she lived with a sister on st. claude st. in new orleans. possible sisters: frances j. kness (m. gerhard kahl) and catherine or katie kness (m. henry m. kamlah). any knowledge on elizabeth kness' father would be greatly appreciated.

whew what a long message!!!! thanx, eli

i'm not sure what happened on this line. it's very strange. as i probably said, i did not start the research on this family, my great-aunt did, and i now have in my possession two pedigree charts, one with the waltzer, menge, decker line, and one with my line, the kness, cannon line. both of these pedigree charts are connected by the Nagle sisters, Josephine, who married Rudolph Waltzer, and Benedictine, who originally married the mysterious Henry Kness, and later a Strickmiller

Do you have any access to the 1870 Plaquemines Parish Census by any chance?
Using Ancestry search, i've found that my Elizabeth Kness, b. 1865 that married Edward Cannon was in the 1870 census, and if i could see that census, it might be possible to find info out about her father, Henry, and mother, Benedictine.

Thanks for your help

Janice, we have so many mysteries. On the Union Worth, MO 1880 found on FTM census Zachariah Kness is listed as "Zackrioh" and it says his mother and father were both born in OH. Whoever was giving the information could be ignorant of the truth, since we also have Chadwick, Illinois. If Zachariah was born 27 March 1850 how could his mother, Elizabeth Moorhead, be born in 1857. She would only be 7 years old. Anyone out there have the correct date for her birth? Do you have her parents? I am a g-granddaughter of Zachariah and Elizabeth Logan Kness. My grandmother was Lula Retta Kness Allen. Check out the Logan Board for information about Elizabeth Ellen Logan's ancestors.

Do you suppose she died on board ship? Or maybe stayed in Germany? Did Martin and Jacob come over with their father, or did they come later? Was all their children born in Germany? Jerry, have you broke this wall yet? Pretty tough isn't it? Am doing a Kness-Moorhead Book for my family and would sure like to put in this information. Could use some HELP.
Re: Henry KNESS-Researchers.

Janice,
I ran across your messages in the genealogy boards and finally decided to write. I am a Kness Family researcher and have visited the grave of Henry and Elizabeth Kness this summer and thought that I would pass on that information. I'm not sure what information you have.
I took pictures of the graves but will have to figure out how to get them to you. I'm not the most computer literate. The graves are located in the Fairhaven Township Cemetery, Fair Haven, Carroll County, Illinois.
Henry was married 3 times I'm told. I know of two of his wives.

Grave stones:
Henry Kness
Born
May 12, 1933
Died
April 5, 1901

Elizabeth Kness
Born
May 27, 1845
Died
March 10, 1903
Could be 1906

I know that this was Henry's last wife and are buried side by side. I have their marriage date somewhere.

He was also married to Catharine Smith. Married June 20, 1856, they were divorced.

Children of Henry (not in order)

Henry Jr born July 20, 1854 in Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany
William M. born 12 May 1863 Carroll County, Illinois (my g-Grandfather) his mother was Catharine
Edward
Frank
Adam Feb 7, 1867
Fred
Charles 1857
George E. July 15, 1861
John
Wess
Marie
Lucinda Jan 9, 1859
Elizabeth

Henry came to the United States Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany in 1855.
Elizabeth came to the United Sates from Germany in 1867.

Sorry Gary, I don't think I can help you. My Kness's are reported to be from Germany. Beginning with Henry Kness, who settled in Ohio and then on down with Martin the first and then Martin the second and so on.. They all resided in Pennsylvania from the early 1700's and onward.
