I doubt very much that historical region Bohemia has anything to do with your research. Our ancestors married within same region, religion (few exceptions) but for sure common language to communicate in and common tradition to observe.

Bohemia? Tucipi is a lovely resort town on the Croatian Adriatic coast.... and has been part of Croatia for perhaps a few hundred years! LALICH (LALIC) is a Croatian name as is KNEZEVIC... Knez from the word for duke or head man.

I have a Great Great Grandmother named Sophia Knezevich she was from Korenice, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic she married Theodore Lalich from Tucipi,Austria and had my great grandfather Mike T Lalich born 24 Mar 1890 in Tucipi, Austria. I'm looking for any family I may be related to.

My grandmother had a surname Knez. She has lived in place called Hrastnik (German: Eichtal) in what is now Slovenia

+ She was born in 1922.
+ her father was Franc (Frantz) Knez (b 1883 in St. Machor 24)
+ her mother was Aplolonija Špende (b 1888 in Kozarje 33, d 1957 in Hrastnik)
+ her grandfather was Martin Knez and her grandmother was Marija

I have no knowledge of any siblings in that branch of my family, but immigration to USA was quite "modern" in that time ... :)

BTW: Knez in Slovenian language means the same as in Croatian: prince, grand duke, prince elector or owner of the land

I am still researching this line with regard to the Knez, Hyland, and Van Schoick surnames. I'm not sure if I am related to any of the other names. I do have some information for the Knez line in Cornell, WI as my father is from Cornell. I also have info on the Hyland family however, I moved and can't locate it at this time. I would really like to hear from anyone who can tell me more about the early Knez line and the Van Schoick line.

Hi,
I am the daughter of Spike aka Don Hedden. My father passed away a year and a half ago. I don't know what info I can provide, but I will try. I had met my grandfather D.G. Hedden at least 30 years ago. He had remarried. My grandmother, Julia (the most wonderful person I have ever known, and I miss her so) passed was born September 15, 1909 and passed away November 10, 1979. She did remarry John Kornatowski. Who I knew as my Grandfather. He passed away about 10years after her. I have the dates somewhere I can look up if you need. In going through my Dads stuff I did not find a book I remember my grandmother having that had the family tree info she used to keep. Perhaps one of the other family members in Granite City, IL has that book. There are still other Knezevich that live there. I have not had any contact with them since my grandmother passed. Another family that may have info is the "Thibeau's". So I am assuming by your name you are related to the Hedden side?

Samuel-Simo has come in America from Yugoslavia at 1907 and lived in Cook county Chicago Illinois.

My grandmother was Lillie Mae (Hyland) Knez! She married Charles Louis Knez and they had eight children: Charles (my father), Thomas (dided in infancy), Dennis, Ray, Kathy, Penny, Wanda, and Christopher. I believe the Hyland and Van Schoick are on her side of the family? I don't recognize the other names but if they are related to either Charles or Lillie I would LOVE to hear about themm.
Are you related to Lillie? If so, how?

I am trying to find my family history. I know that my family came from what my grandmother called Bohemia and referred to the Black Forest region of Europe. I'm not sure how acurate her information is. She also mentioned that our family HAD to leave Europe and that they were in some trouble. I have also heard that they were some what wealthy in Europe but not in the US.
My ggparents names were Frank and Christina Knez. I don't know her maiden name. I suppose it's possible our name was changed slightly as well.
If you have any info or can point me to the right direction, I would be grateful!
Also, my father once told me that before my granparents were married, my grandpa had an illegitimate child (believed to be a son) while in WWII in Europe. My grandfather's name was Charles L. Knez from Cornell, WI USA

Answers for you : "Sure(nick)name was add for better definition ! Like I was wrote before ; the surename Knezevic in Boraja is very usal . Because that "sure(nick)name" is add to real surename for better defenition between so much family in village with same surename !
Trought the past a lot of family from Boraja with this surename are moved out from the village in the nearby towns Sibenik & Split and of course around the globe . Because of that the "sure(nick)names" are vanishing .
Marichich in U.S., in Croatia Maričić . Mara is female name in Croatia , especially in Dalmatia (Mara is short name for Margarita ) . Add -ich or -ichich indicate something small . So: Mar(a) + ichich = MARICHICH = Children of Mara . For this explanation I `m not 100% sure .
The surename Knezevic in Croatia is usual . You can find this surename in region Slavonia:village Babina Greda and village Ivankovo , in region Lika:town Gracac , in region:Dalmatia village Jasenice near town Zadar , in village BORAJA near town Sibenik , some villages near town Dubrovnik . This surename is almost everyvhere in Croatia !
We in Croatia write this surename like this : KNEŽEVIĆ .

Yes I `m living in Croatia, region: Dalmatia in small place Brodarica 7kilometers (4 mile) from town Sibenik . My parents are move out from village Boraja and they came in Brodarica .
Croatia is very beautiful land , especially Dalmatia !

My birth name was Knez. I found my birth family in Austria about 7 years ago. Unfortunetly my birthparents had already passed away. My birthmothers maiden name was Anna Knez and she was from Yugoslavia and immigrated to Linz Austria I think in the 50's. I know she still had family that she left behind. A sister I'm sure of. That's all the info. that I know.

Thanks again. This is wonderful information. I have learned more about the origin of the name Knezevich than I ever thought possible!

I would love to look up the Ellis Island site and actually find something, but I know I wouldn't. My grandfather came to the U.S. on a ship that didn't pass through there. He was supposed to return to Croatia on that Same ship and stayed in the U.S. instead. So, there are no records of his entry into the U.S.

My father told me that my Grandfather had been married in Croatia (at that time Austria as I now know, thanks for that as well!) and had a son named Josip. What happened to this wife and child, I have no idea. It would be neat to find out.

You mentioned your Grandmother's name as also being Knezevic Maricic. Any chance of us being related?

Also, do you live in Croatia? I have seen pictures. It looks beautiful!!! I have always wanted to visit. Maybe someday I'll get an opportunity.

Thanks for the information. Wow, I still have so much to find out. Is Knezevich the way it was originally supposed to be spelled? Since I've seen so many variations on my grandparents papers after they arrived in the U.S., I wasn't sure. I now know the Exact country name, region, and city to look for. Thanks for the information. Of course I now have many questions! You said in the village of Boraja there is a part called Knezevic and Knezevic Maricic. Why is it divided like this? I had always thought that Maricic was my grandfather's middle name, but apparently that's not the case. Is it another surname? Do you happen to know how I would be able to contact the Village there? Of course not knowing any Yugoslavian at all, that might be a problem for me. Any suggestions?

Julia Knezevic

Looking for information concerning Julia Knezevic or Knezevich who married a Donald Gordon Hedden between 1938 and 1940. They had a son Donald Hedden born 7-14-41.
He was often called Spike. Julia and Don divorced when Spike was between 3 and 5 years old. I believe Julia passed away within the past few years. I don't know if she remarried. Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

If you are the Beverly my mother told me about, born April of 1951 and you are speaking of Lou Knezevich, my mother says he is not your father as he died in April of 1950 an entire year before you were born.

Well,I"m not sure about the place called Sebnik,it would be helpfull,if you knew,maybe a region,or the exact religion of your family.Our surname comes in to different types of religion.One is rhimochatolic(Croats) and the orthodoxchatolic(Serbs).

locating my birth family

I am trying to find out some information concerning my
birth father. From information I have received, his surname
was Knezevich. He was in the Naval Airforce Reserves, and was killed in a plane crash in 1950.

My father (also Louis) came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1913. When I was growing up, I remember only one or two Knezevich in the Greater Cleveland phone book. Frequently I was I was asked if I was related to Joe Knezevich. He lived on the West Side of Cleveland and was not related. Maybe this is a clue in your search.

I don't hold out much help anymore with trying to figure out where my fathers family is at.........On his application for social security he said that his mothers name was marie knezevich////////He did tell me that his father was a diplomat for the Czar.....On his application for social security he lied about his fathers name, he said it was John Adams......he came to America in 1916.........and spent a number of years in Cleveland Ohio

I just wonder if somebody could help me with links to find out a little more about my family and who knows I might be related to some of you.
My Grandfather was born in 1924 in a little place called Zavrsje near the town of Kiseljak in Bosnia and Hercegovina and passed away in 1945, what I´ve heard so far is that his father came there from Dalmatia somewhere between the towns of Zadar and Sibenik, by my own research I found a small village and the name of it is "Knezevici" which means the small village of Knezevic....
So anyone that can provide me with further information I would be greatful.
By the way my grandfathers name was Jakov Knezevic and his fathers was Mio Knezevic.

the name Knez means Lord or Knight and it has a royal meaning but that doesn´t have to mean that everyone with Knez in it´s surname have so called royal blood.

I know something that might help you.
There is a small village near Sibenik that I drove by in 1998, that is called "Knezevici" it means the village of Knezevic.
And I am trying to find out something about my grandfather that past away in 1945.
Otherwise you could try to find some more information in the Croatian genealogy database on the net.
