William KNIBB - Jamaica, antislavery, Baptist

Looking for more info about family of William KNIBB, son of Thomas and Mary Knibb, born at Kettering, Northants on September 7th, 1803. He was a Baptist minister and became became an important antislavery campaigner in Jamaica and in England.

He is connected to my COLLINGS family as Rev William COLLINGS (Baptist minister in Gloucester, UK) and wife Louisa (nee BURROWS) had a son named William Knibb COLLINGS (b 1846 in Surrey)- Baptist missionary in Africa.

There are numerous Jamaica/slavery/baptist/Kettering/West Africa coincidences within my COLLINGS family and I feel certain that William was named after the famous William Knibb. The mystery is whether or not the KNIBB and COLLINGS families were actually related.

I am currently researching a book about the involvement of my COLLINGS family in the anti-slavery movement and would love to solve the 'Knibb' mystery.

Can anyone help?

Claire
Note received today from Sterling's daughter Nancy reads:
"I am one of his daughters writing in regard to a correction that needs to be made if at all possible. He was survived by five (5) sons and the one omited is Danny Wiese of Virginia(state of) and not Illinois.
The second correction is that Mildred Marie(Huebner) Knibb died on Dec. 27, 1960 and not Oct. 22."

I don't know why the original obit left out one of the sons. As to Mildred's date of death - that is definitely my mistake. I have the proper info in my database. Don't know how I managed to copy it incorrectly.
Alan, It was wonderful and surprising to find others in my family. We are a rather small family.
Have you ever determined the name of William Knibb's older brother? Our grandfather-Charles Knibb- who was born in the 1880's is a direct decendant of his. My mom is still alive, and she would have all the particulars. I'll ring her up later and see what light she can shed on this.

Alan,

I recently started to trace my family tree. I'm from the Cardiff (South Wales) line of knibbs. My grandparents are / were Fredrick and Rose Knibbs, brothers and sisters include; Jack, Edna, Ruby, Beryl. All from the Cardiff area most of which are now dead. I'm trying to gather as much information as I can from my grandfather but at 86 years old his memory is not too good. My father Allan David Knibbs has supplied me with some information although my grandfather is confussed us as to whether the data is correct. I intend spending some time in the records office in Cardiff in the near future researching the immediate generations. If you have anything that you think might help can you mail me. Thanks.
