There is a possibility he could be a brother to my grgrandfather born in 1848, we think in GA. There was a family that had some Thomas Knights in it. Since I have absolutely no information on my grgrandfather's family except maybe name of Isaac Elbert as being his father, it might be worth looking into. I know there are some Thomas Knights from TN. I even used to work with a Thomas Knight from LA. What county did he die in?

I don't have a birth certificate, I have a death certificate. He died at the age of 84 in 1923, born in 1839. The Dr. who filled out his certificate didn't know any family information and just filled in the spaces with don't know. According to the 1900 Lincoln Parish census, he stated that he was born in Georgia. He also died from enfluenza and pheunomia, so that does not match your information. I don't think they did birth certificates in that time. I also know that Thomas Gidd probably never owned any land as he was listed as farm laborer or hiredhand on the three census that I think are him. Would love to find some connection somewhere as it seems that I hit a dead end with everything.

Your response was very interesting. Don't have your original query in front of me, but obviously Thomas Gidd Knight was an adult when died. My recollection of your query was that he was born around 1864.

According to my uncle he told me this, Uncle Gidd was waylaid and stabbed in the stomach by several people. He said it happened before he was born and he never knew him. I assumed that it was his father's brother, but it could have been his grandfather's brother. It is possible he could have been wrong about how old he was also.

You said you have a birth certificate for Thomas Gidd Knight from GA. If you could tell me where in GA he was born that might help to figure out if it ties in.

So far have been unable to find any relatives of my grgrandfather John Darling Knight. Thomas is a family name that would tie to John Darling Knight and to my grandfather Zachariah Knight.

It is probably a long shot, but so far nothing has connected in my search, maybe this will be a break. I have been unable to establish where my grandfather came from in GA. If there is a connection, this will help me find his family.

The story that I have is that my grgrandfather Thomas Gidd may have had a brother who was killed during the civil war(?). All I have been able to find out is that Thomas Gidd Knight died near Ruston La(Vienna probably)in 1923. His wife was Francis (Fannie) C. Johnson and there were 3 children, Elizabeth, Horace, and Willie E. according to the census and it states that Thomas was born in Georgia. Sounds like there could be some connection. I have the death certificate of both, but no information as to who parents were. I have not located a burial place, probably in unmarked grave in Vienna, La.

This is a long shot, but I have been looking for someone my uncles call Uncle Gid. He was my grandfather's brother. I understand he died before 1925. My grandfather, Zachariah Knight, was born about 1894 in Nassau County, FL,I believe. His father, John D. Knight is believed to have come from GA, but we have been unable to find his parents. There doesn't seem to be any trace of him in the family cemetery. It was my understanding he was a young man when he died. Does this sound like anyone you could connect with?

I have reason to believe that my ancestor, Spires Sullivan b.? d. 1860 in Chesterfield County,SC, married a daughter of Aaron Knight. Spires came from Marlboro County, S.C. and worked for Aaron Knight. I do not know the name of his wife but believe it to be Rebecca. I found Spires on the 1850 Census in Chesterfield County with Thomas and Mourning Sullivan and what appear to be their children but have not been able to determine the relationship between Spires and Thomas. Spires is said to have had a brother Joseph who either came to Chesterfield County with Spires or followed him later.

Have you possibly come across Spires and his wife and children in your research? I will gladly share with you what information I have on the Knight family though it is very limited.

KNIGHT Patriarchs, 1600's

Hello.

I've just spent 1/2 hour going through the archives of the KNIGHT List and
Boards, and the MA List, and I'm not finding a summary of the KNIGHT
patriarchs in 1600's MA Bay Colony (including NH).

Or, if there was a partial summary, the postings are from several years ago.
From the old postings, I'll mention from different researchers:

John KNIGHT, b~1595, and Mary PICKERING, who came from Southampton,
Hampshire, England. Their children were: Mary, b1620, Joseph, b1624,
John, b1630, and Michael, b1634, all born in England. The family appears
in Charlestown by 1674.

From "Pioneers of MA" by Pope,
KNIGHT, William, Salem, 1636; Lynn, juryman, ....
KNIGHT, John, Cambridge, 1635; carpenter ....

KNIGHT, John, with wife, Mary, had child, Joseph KNIGHT, who died in Woburn
in 1687, and had wife, Hannah.

Ebenezer KNIGHT, b1695, Woburn, who m. Mary JOHNSON 1717 and had 9 children,
and m. 2) Elizabeth BAYTON 1742.

.. I found at least 2 postings where researchers said that they had a
KNIGHT data base / web site, but the web sites (this morning) are no longer
available.

And, I saw that one book mentions there is a "KNIGHT book," but there is no
further information on it.

And, I checked the WorldConnect Project, and either the site isn't working
at the moment, or I'm not finding the KNIGHT name mentioned.

Would anyone have time to post the KNIGHT patriarchs from the 1630's and
1640's ?

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

FYI:

My ancestors are Ashabel / Ashbel RICE and Percissa "Persis" KNIGHT who were
in Marlborough, MA, then "Maine" in late 1700's. They spent a few years in
Digby, NS, ~1800, and then returned to "Maine." I am descended from one
of their youngest, Daniel RICE, b~1804. And, then I am descended from his
youngest (of 10), Charles Wellington RICE, b1850 Lubec, ME.

I am told by researchers that I am probably descended from Ebenezer RICE,
b1726, Woburn, who had 3 wives, and Percissa might have been the child from
the second wife, Mary.

Hi Don. A belated, thank you, for offering your information.

I see that you have slightly different names that other researchers have said. I wonder whether other researchers could offer their current opinions.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(Descended from Ashbel RICE and Percissa / Persis KNIGHT of mid-1700's Stow and Marlborough, MA, area.
Malissa Jane Deas and John Wesley Knight were my ggggrandparents. They were from Chesterfield South Carolina. John Wesley Knight was also in the Civil War. He is buried in Fincastle Tn. I have a copy of the death certificate of J.W. Knight. It states Jane Deas as the wife. I also have a copy of him fighting in the spanish american war-something like that. It mentions his complexion as dark.My grandpa Knight and almost all of his brothers are dark. There is also something that states how Malissa died. They put Malissa as male-DUMB. However do not know where she is buried. Would like to know who JW father and mother were. Who were all of his siblings. Were they ever a wealthy family? Just wondering?
Laura

Re: Family of Martha KNIGHT's Father

Based on the birth year of George KNIGHT (Martha's father) I found this KNIGHT family in the 1850 census, which is a good possibility to be George W. KNIGHT's parents and siblings:

Source Citation: Year: 1850
Census Place: District 8, Franklin, Tennessee
Roll M432_878; Page: 69

Benjamin B Knight, 49, Farmer, real estate value: $1500, b. VA
Darcus Knight, 42, b. SC
John Knight, 20, b. TN
Sarah Knight, 16, b. TN
Mary Knight, 14, b. TN
Margaret Knight, 12, b. TN, attended school
Henny Knight, 10, (female), b. TN, attended school
Tennessee Knight, 8, (female), b. TN, attended school
Joseph F Knight, 6, b. TN
George W Knight, 4, b. TN
Martha Knight, 1, b. TN

Even though the birth places for this Benjamin and Dorcas are different from what George gave for his parents in the 1880 census, the fact that this George's sisters are named Margaret, Mary and Martha, and George gave his daughters the same names, makes me suspect this is the correct family for George W. KNIGHT, (Martha's father and Roscoe's Grt-grandfather)

**************************************
And here is the same family in the 1860 census although George KNIGHT doesn't appear to be living in the household any longer, (unless he was missed). I can't seem to find him anywhere else so perhaps he was traveling around working as a hired hand somewhere before he married Mary and so was missed by the census taker.

Source Citation: Year: 1860
Census Place: District 8, Franklin, Tennessee
Roll M653_1249; Page: 136

B B Knight, 59, Farmer, real estate value: $1500, personal estate value: $4000, b. VA
Darcas Knight, 54, b. SC
Tennessee Knight, 18, b. TN
Joseph F Knight, 17, Farmhand, TN
Martha E Knight, 11, TN, attended school
Temperance J Starns, 36, TN (possibly a widowed daughter?)
Wm T Starns, 13, TN
John A Starns, 7, TN

Here's Martha KNIGHT, (Jim Knight's mother, Roscoe's grandmother) in the 1880 census with her parents.

Source Citation: Year: 1880
Census Place: District 7, Robertson, Tennessee
Roll T9_1277; Page: 101 D; Enumeration District: 182

G.W. Knight, Daughter, 14, can't read or write, TN (Margaret C. in the 1870 census?)
Irena? Knight, Daughter, 10, can't read or write, TN (Irene? in the 1900 census?)
S.A. Knight, Daughter, 7, TN (Ann in the 1900 census?)
M.I. Knight, Daughter, 6, TN (Martha in the 1900 census?)
B.T. Knight, Daughter, 4, TN
Andrew Knight, Son, 2, TN

I believe the M.I. Knight (daughter, age 6, is James's mother and Roscoe's grandmother)
****************************************
Here is the same family in the 1870 census before Martha (Roscoe's grandmother was born):

Source Citation: Year: 1870
Census Place: District 24, Davidson, Tennessee
Roll M593_1522; Page: 162

George Knight, 24, Farmer, TN, can't read or write
Mary E Knight, 28, TN, can't read or write
George W Knight, 8, TN, can't read or write
Mary E Knight, 6, TN
Margaret C Knight, 4, TN
Irena Knight, 5/12, TN, ( b. Jan 1870)

The birth year given for Irene in the 1900 census seems to be incorrect compared to this Irena born in 1870. Since the parents couldn't read or write, perhaps they didn't have the information written down anywhere and forgot the correct year/month; Or it's possible the census taker wrote
the date incorrectly in the 1900 census

Re: John Wesley Knight - Malissa Lane Deas

I am the great-great granddughter of Bernetta Knight b. Apr 1851 daughter of John Wesley and Malissa Lane Deese/Deas/Dees. Seems like she is always left out as one of the children of John and Malissa. But, John and Malissa are my 2 most documented ancestors (1850-1900) but I cannot find John Wesley's parents. You can view my family line with census records and such on the Miller - Coy Ancestry website located at www.millercoy.com-a.googlepages.com/miller-coyancestry2. The Knight family is under my Miller Family Ancestors for Data Records. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
