Henry Gilbert Knights - b. 1862 IA

I am trying to link my Great Grandfather, Henry Gilbert Knights, born in Shell Rock Iowa in 1862, to the Knights in Vermont & New Hampshire. His father, Hinkley Gilbert Knights was supposedly born in Vermont (perhaps Montpellier) around 1828, but there are indications the family links to the Knights of Claremont, New Hampshire before that. I am interested in any Knights information pertaining to Vermont and Claremont New Hampshire that may help me make a connection, especially information about the descendents of Amasiah Kinghts (born 25 Aug 1746), Phineas Knights (born 20 Jun 1769), Julius Phineas Knights, his wife Wealthy Avery Knights or their son Frederick. Any chance your Knights are associated?

I am looking for information about the male children of Phineas Knights (botn 1769 in Massachusetts, but later of Claremont, New Hampshire...died there in 1853). Specifically, information on the children of George Knights (birth unknown), Asa Baldwin Knights (born 1798), Arnott Gilbert Knights (born 1799) and Charles M. Knights (born 1818). I am trying to link Hinkley Gilbert Knights (born 1828) to one of these male Knights children.
Thanks in advance,
Gregg

I greatly appreciate it. Here is the rest of the informaiton I have: on a hand-written note..."It seems Julius Phineas gave Hinkley Gilbert and his wife one half dozen silver spoons for a wedding gift. Hinkley Gilberts first two children were born in Ill, but none of the family now left could remember where." It goes on..."Phineas was the son and oldest child of Amasiah Knights and he had nine children (no further details). Arnott Gilbert - being the second and I guess the only one to stray away for the others are buried in this part of the country (Claremont, NH)". That's all I have, but much of it is now starting to make sense. Wish I knew more about the children of Amasiah and especially Phineas. Were Arnott and Hinkley perhaps brothers? Or maybe cousins? If you encounter any of this, I would appreciate the info. By the way, I am attaching a picture of my Great-Grandfather (Henry Gilbert Knights) as a young man. Perhaps there is a family resemblence? Like his father, he didn't stay in one place very long, moving from Iowa to West Virginia, to Massachusetts, and eventually ending up back in Claremont, NH. (Making him very hard to track.)
Thanks,
Gregg
Certainly does. I greatly appreciate it. Problem is, I can't tell if we are talking cousins or siblings here. I think it possible that Hinkly spent some time with relatives in Illinois in 1850, on his way to Iowa.
Hi Gregg - I have lots of Knights - mine came from MA, but my g-g-grandfather moved to Wardboro Vt. I have Amaziah Knight, son of John Knight of Woburn, MA. That one was born 1703 and I have no info as to his wife. The other Amaziah Knight in my line was the son of Ebenezer Knight - son of John - also Woburn, MA - that Amaziah was born 1720 and married Jane Smith. If any of this fits, let me know - we can investigate further.

Greg,
I don't have anything definite, but some clues:
In researching my SMITH family of Waitsfield, VT, I have that Elvira SMITH (bp 26 May 1805, Waitsfield), married Gilbert Arnott KNIGHT (or Arnot G - records have him listed both ways. According to Waitsfield church records: Arnott G Knights & wife Elvira were dismissed to Gouverneur, NY ca 4 Jan 1839. Arnot G & Alvira/Elvira L were in Lamoille, Bureau Co, IL in 1850 and 1860 censuses.
1850 Arnot G Knights, age 51, Elvira L, age 45, Julius F, 18 & Hinckley G, age 24, etc.
1860 Arnot G Knight, age 60, b NH; next door was Julius P Knight, age 27, b VT & wife Wealthy.

The Claremont connection comes from Waitsfield Land records vol 5:351: Arnot G Knights of Waitsfield mortgaged 1/2 acre to Olive Knights of Claremont, NH, 16 Jan 1836. She discharged the mortgage at Claremont 9 Mar 1838 - one of the witnesses was Esther Knights.

Because this was 2 generations from my line, I didn't research further. But other Washington Co, VT-Claremont, NH connections: John G Knights, who died in Waterbury, VT 1870, was son of "Amariah" & Lydia Knights. I think that my Catherine Knights, supposedly from Claremont, wife of Richard Kneeland of Waterbury, VT, was a daughter of Amaziah. There was an Isaac Knight married in Waterbury 1814, who might have been another son.

I don't know the children of Phineas Knight (son of Amaziah), but he was definitely old enough to be father of Arnot G. (Perhaps Olive was his daughter.)

Oh, and I checked Vital Records in Northfield, MA & Amaziah married Lydia Wright GRANDY. She was daughter of John Grandy & Esther (Wright).

Hope this gives you some clues to check.
I have the following notes compiled by a family member (now deceased) who had done some research...Amasiah Knights was born August 25, 1746, died January 4, 1835. He married January 29, 1767, Lydia Wight (born Nov 16, 1746, died Sept 7, 1833). Amasiah Knights was a volunteer in Capt Oliver Ashley's Company of Claremont, N.H. in the Revolutionary War and fought in the battle of Saratoga, Sept 1777. Records were taken from the history of Claremont, N.H. page 236. Children of Amasiah & Lydia (Wight) Knights
1. Phineas, (born June 20, 1769, died Oct 28, 1853) married Ester Mathews (born Apr 5, 1770, died Aug 27, 1862)
I have no other information on other children.

Note the spelling difference in these notes: Lydia's last name is in both instances spelled "Wight" not "Wright", but I am workning from a hand-copy of the original book.

I am trying to link my Great Grandfather, Henry Gilbert Knights, born in Shell Rock Iowa in 1862, to the Knights in Vermont & New Hampshire.
Knight-Chesterfield, South Carolina> Fulton County, GA

I am researching the family of Nathaniel Knight. He was born in 1785 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He died on April 3, 1863 in Fulton County Georgia. He married Nancy McMillian. Nathaniel Knight and Nancy McMillian had the following children: Catherine Knight, Mary Maria Knight, Elizabeth Knight, Thomas Knight, Emma Knight, Edward Knight, and William H. Knight.

Nathaniel Knight could be the son of Aaron Knight.

Hello Ann
Not too many people searching "Knights" and families! - I am back at it after 2 years of not doing much. I am not too sure what I can tell you, but will dig out what I have - even if repetative of earlier:(
Nice to email to a DISTANT relative:)
My main question concerns James Anderson Knights: when and why he left Australia for NZ etc etc (I feel there is a story here!). I am also VERY interested in the subsequent history of family/Warrnambool and so on.
My email is
nzdanenz@hotmail.com.....OR nzdanenz@gmail.com
Look forward to hearing from you, and maybe cross the ditch one day to meet.
Sincerely,
Roger

Hello Ann
I do have some information: Robina was born June 1830 in Inverness, Scotland, and married my ggf at Warrnambool in 1859. It was his second marriage (first wife died c 1856). His name was Walter Knights. They had one son, James Anderson Knights (my g/f). She died in 1860, when he was about 14 mths old. I do have some more information about direct descendants if you wish - perhaps email me on nzdanenz@hotmail.com.
My apologies for not replying sooner. Please ask any specific questions (but i can't guarantee to have the answers!) You msg was first time i knew that Robina had any siblings - perhaps you can tell me about them?
Regards,
Roger Knights

Hello Anne
A belated reply:(
Mt g/f was James Anderson KNIGHTS, son of Robina Anderson (b21 Jun 1830 in, I think, Scotland, died 1860 Warrnambool, Vic), and Walter Knights (about whom I know almost nothing!).
James Anderson (b 12 Feb 1801, Abernathy, Scotland, d 24 May 1863, Victoria) m Isabella McPherson (b 26 Jun 1796, Inverness, d Allansford, Vic).
James Anderson was a son of John Anderson (b 1745, Scotland) and Janet LAWSON (b 1767, Scotland).
I suspect from your msg that the John A you refer to is named after his g/f, being a brother of Robina.
What I have offered may not be much - hope it helps!
If you can assist with ANYTHING related to Knights/Anderson, (esp in Australia) I would be most grateful

Could "wedwards194" please contact me, as I too am building a Knights Tree: Stanley was my uncle, and I did meet Phyllis c. 1977. Stanley's father was James Anderson K., b in Warrnambool 1859, to NZ c. 1882, m. Knox Church Dun 1887, d . Waikouaiti 1912, buried in Oamaru. His wife (Sophie Emma nee Ruston) is buried in Otautau - she died 1939. I will be delighted to send you what I have - am off to Warrnambool for more "digging", but have VERY little on Knights in NZ, and your entry on Ancestry was most informative.
I have progressed very well in my reasearch into my tree but am stuck with my Gt Grandfather.
From his marriage and death certs I am confident that his full name was William Henry Knights and that he was born in abt 1875. From family info he probably came from the Harrow / Willesden area of N/London. I know he seperated from his wife Jeanne Tramasuer and had a new wife / partner. His marriage cert states his father was also William.
I can't identify him on the Census as a child or find a record of his birth.

I have gone back to basics and started from the begining several times and am now wondering if the details he supplied on his marriage cert were false as he may have been still married when he married my Gt Granmother, which would account for the family rumour that he had a bigamous mariage.A his funeral to 'wives' turned up apparently.

Can anyone on here advise me on how I can progress this, any advice will be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

John

Just wondering if anyone can help me out?

I'm a direct descendant of John Knights (born ~1774 in Suffolk). John married Mary Allen (born ~1767 in Suffolk) in 1792.

They had 5+ children: James, Mercy, Samuel (born 1800), Happy, and Patience. (I suspect they also had a girl called Mary Ann in 1805).

Samuel married Mahala Barber (born 1812 in Suffolk) in 1841.

They had 5 children: Joseph, Mary, John (born 1845), Elen, Sarah Mahala.

John married Elizabeth Ivey (born 1844) in 1865.

The line continues down another 3 generations to me.

My complete tree is available on Ancestry.

Thanks for any possible information/assistance.

KNIGHTS of Suffolk and Norfolk

I am looking for the baptism of my ancestor Robert KNIGHTS c.1740 and his marriage to Ann ??? c.1767 possibly in Nfk. Robert and Ann moved to Henstead, Sfk in 1767 - had children and were buried in Henstead in 1822 and 1810 respectively. At the time of his burial Robert had moved to Beccles so there may be a connection with the Beccles KNIGHTS. I have found a baptism for Robert and Joseph KNIGHTS around 1740 in Wheatacre, Nfk and as Joseph is a common name in later generations, would like to hear from anyone researching Wheatacre KNIGHTS in case this is them.
If anyone is researching KNIGHTS in Pakefield or Kessingland, I have tracked all the KNIGHTS there and am happy to pass on information.
Jenny

Hi Peter
Joseph Knights,my gggg grandfather, was baptised 1 Jan 1775 at Henstead. Son Joseph and Hannah (Smith) had 7 children and I have 3-4 generations of descendants of this couple so should be able to help you with info. I have also traced these Knights back to Joseph snr's grandparents who were Joseph and Elizabeth born c.1710. If you send an email to me directly at j.ellis_newman@ecu.edu.au with details of which children you are looking for I will check my records and see what I have.
Yes, an "s" could be added (or subtracted) - as most of the population were not able to write/read, it was up to the writer to interpret.

Were there any children from his marriage to Ann? as if so, one of their birth certificates will hold an answer

Emmeline Lois Austin Knights / Richard Isaac Austin Knights

I'm trying to trace my great grandmother, Emmeline Lois Austin Knights (abt 1888-1928), who got married in Hagbourne which was then in Berks, but is now Oxon. She married Frederick Shayler, a builder, in 1911, but I can't find any trace of her before that date. The marriage cert records her father as Richard Isaac Austin Knights, a publican. We believe the family originates in Ireland (co Waterford) and that Emmeline might have come to England to work 'in service'. Emmeline and Fred stayed in the Hagbourne area (near Didcot) and their descendants are still there.
If anyone has any information or ideas as to how I could find out more, I'd be pleased to hear them.
Thanks
Gerry
