I have Knobels from Schwanden too. I don't think I can give you any information that will put you back to the next generation but I can tell you that if they are named "Knobel" and they came from Schwanden, then they are related somehow. Check the other rootweb sources. I know there is a man researching Swiss families from Glarus who settled in Minnesota. My line went to Otter Tail County. A "cousin" did some research on her Zimmermann line and because of that we were not only able to figure out our relationship but also get the family back to Switzerland. The Swiss keep a vital record on family genealogy. Because I took advantage of a "cousin's" research, I don't know the name of the record or how to get hold of it. However, I've been told that Glarus is now allowing the LDS church to microfilm this record. You might want to check some of the Swiss web-sites to see what they have. I am sure there is a Glarus web-site because I remember using it once upon a time.

Hopefully, with a bunch of us looking for a connection we can tie our Knobels together.

Candace

Our line of knobels lived in Champlin, MN in Hennepin Co. The farm they homesteaded is now located between Osseo & Brooklyn Center. I am trying to trace our line of knobels back to Schwanden, Glarus, Switzerland where they came from. Martin Knobel came over in 1862 or 63 with his son Martin & wife Magdalena. We believe Martin Sr. was widowed at sea. I don't know who he was married to. Can you help? Where was your line of Knobels located. Perhaps they are related at some level, coming from the same area in Schwanden. Thanks, Christian C Knobel

Maplegrove, MN, Hennepin County. They homesteaded a farm which is now between Osseo & Brooklyn Center. Our line of Knobels came over in 1863. Most are buried in a cemetary located in New Schwanden which is no longer a village but part of Champlin, MN. #305 Martin Knobel 1/11/1841-12/11/1883 I believe was married to Magdalena Scheisser. I am trying to find their parents from Schwanden & trace our line of Knobels. I know the no's but need the names of #187 Knobel; #120 Knobel; #83 Knobel; #41? Knobel; #30 Knobel then #21 Abraham Knobel 1646-1712 married to Afra Jenny #11 Peter Knobel 1615-1697 married to Barbara Zimmerman; #11 Markus Knobel married 1606 to Sibilla Speich. Can you help or direct me to anyone that can. Thanks Christian C Knobel.

Since that time, I have learned that Henry Buschbaum was actually namd Henrich Buchsbaum, he arrived at Ellis Island on the Le Bretagne from Le Havre on September 28, 1896. He was 16 and arrived alone or at least with no family members with the same name. His mother was named Sofie and she had three sisters here and one sister Louise married two brothers named Buchsbaum. Henrichhad been born in Austria and had 3 brothers and a sister.

Her father was Roy Gerhart Knobel who married a Eva marie Hansen and they moved to Colorado (where my mother was bort) and then on to California. Harry Knobel married a woman named Allie and they moved to California. Lillian married a Lotshaw and I have an extensive tree on the Lotshaw's. Margaret married a Carstensen, Ethel married a Bracken. I would hope that there is a connection and I will also ask my mother about the Zimmerman name.
Chris, thanks for replying. I am searching for any and all info about Emery(Emerich) and Knobel lineages. I saw several with the surname of Knobel, but I didn't have any names to tell if they were related to Maria Magdalena Knobel-Emery. Also, what country, ship name did the Knobel origin come from. I would love to have pics of Maria, Andrew, siblings, parents, birth-death dates, churches attended etc. Maria and Andrew are my g.g.grandparents. One of their daughters, Elizabeth married Levi Christein(Christine). I have been trying to learn about the Christein lineage too along with all of Maria and Andrew's children. I have located several, have a family tree with many names that needs updating terribly as it's so ancient. Also, I have my g. grandmother, Cecilia Christein's diary dated 1882 in which she was in her early to mid twentys when she wrote in it. She speaks of many relatives and was from Bethlehem, PA. Also, Elizabeth died and Levi married again. I wonder who the woman is he married. I have no info or name on her other than Cecilia mentioning in her diary that Levi remarried. Cecilia married Henry Spencer and he served in the Confederate side of the Civil War. I have no other info on him. I am supposing he was from VA, but not sure. Also, I would love to learn what the Knobel Family and Emerich Family were like. Do you have any info on them you can impart or newspaper articles? This is fascinating to me and I'm so glad to have a tie (you) to the Knobel-Emerich branch.

My G Grandfather's name was Christian Knobel, b. in Germany, as was his son, James Edward Noble. I knew neither of them as Grandfather James died in 1943 when I was six months old. James, and I'm not sure about Christian, came to Hanover and York, PA. James Edward married Clara Martha Garrett and they had 7 children. My father, Russell Charles Noble, was born in 1907, so I'm assuming his father was born around 1875. Wish I knew more about this, but I don't even know if I can get records from Germany. The Knobel's also lived in Alsace-Lorranie between France and Germany.

Mary

Knobel family research

Hi John, I'm also a Knobel and researching Knobel family in New York area-descendents of Charles Knobel(b. approx 1840 in Germany) who emigrated to NYC married Ellen Cuivan(?). They had a son, James, my paternal GF, who married Margaret Reynolds in 1905 in NYC. They had 4 sons. Charles-my father-was the oldest.
James'brother, Charles, married Margaret's sister, Grace and they moved upstate to the Beacon area, where they had a daughter named Helen, who married a man named Jack Darcy.

Would love to hear from descendants of Charles KNOBEL, b.1847 in Prussia. He married Ellen KERWIN and had 2 sons, my GF James Joseph KNOBEL, b. 1887 and Charles KNOBEL, b. 1889. James married Marget REYNOLDS in 1905. They had 5 children, including my father, Charles, uncles John J., Thomas, James D., and aunt Marget ("Sissie"). James and Marget divorced in the 1920's and he married Bertha NEUBAUER. Marget married Andrew CONWAY. Any cousins out there?

Do you have any additional info on Henry Buschbaum? My great grandfather came from Germany in 1880's, 1890's. He had several brothers who came before him. They all came through NY and settled in various places. Gustav, August and Fred (gg) I am aware of. Otto is a son of either Gustav or August. But there were other brothers, many I'm told. Fred's mother's last name was Nacke and he married a Weis.

Afra KNOBEL (who, I am told was Susannah's sister.) I'm trying to figure out how the KNOBELs in Otter Tail (Elizabeth and Fergus Falls) fit into my ZIMMERMAN line. This family also lived in Henepin county for a while.

Did this family come to the USA? I have a Thomas ZIMMERMAN who married 1. Susannah KNOBEL and 2. Afra KNOBEL who were said to be sisters. This family settled in Otter Tail Co. in a little town called Elizabeth near Fergus Falls. I've got my Zimmerman line back to the 1500s but can't seem to work out my Knobel line. There were several Knobel families in the Elizabeth area and they signed documents with the Zimmermans so I'm pretty sure there was a family connection.

Grace,
Came upon your post while trying to research our ancestry. I can only add that there was one more child born to James and Margaret. Her name was Catherine, born a year before or after my father who was born 11/20/12. She died at the approximate age of 25 of natural causes. She had one child, so there is one more cousin out there. Also, I believe our grandfather's birthdate is 7/29/1886 and our grandmother's is 2/14/1876.
