I am hoping to find others researching Maria KOEHN, who was born in 1842 at Perleburg, PRUSSIA, Germany. Maria came to Texas and married Christian SCHULENBURG in 1874 at Austin County, Texas. They were the parents of several children, including Bertha SCHULENBURG (born at Fayette County, Texas around 1875). Bertha SCHULENBURG married Herman Ernest RABE in 1896. Maria "Mary" KOEHN Schulenburg died at Fayette County, Texas in 1884. Hope to hear from you!

Yes! That would have been the Canoga Park house. It was great. As a kid I loved running around there - then Aunt Eva always had a big pitcher of pink lemonade mixed with 7-Up. After that they moved to the Rossmore Leisure World complex in Seal Beach where they lived the rest of their lives. We spent all holidays with them. They were pretty much the only family I had except my parents. I wish I had spent more time with them and learned more about them and the family. Uncle Harry died in 1972 and Aunt Eva died - I think - in about 1978(??)

Seems to me both those locations ring a bell and around 1959-1960(?) or so. I do remember him being very proud of some of his orange trees and the quality of fruit they put out. Quite a bit of the anecdotal information came from my Uncle Walt who was one of the children of William Kohn and Helena Goegge (George, Gertrude, and Walter). Gertrude was my mother.

I would love to know more about the family. Apparently, my father (Eldred) had some falling out with the family when I was 3 and we moved from New York to California. So, besides Aunt Eva and Uncle Harry (my great aunt and uncle), I've had absolutely no contact with anyone except one of my father's cousins on the Griewisch side (Carl's wife's family). I'm slowly trying to put this all together. My Griewisch "cousin" has been a huge help. During what time period did you visit Eva and Harry? When they lived in Canoga Park or after they moved to Seal Beach?

Well nice to hear from someone from the 'family'. The whole group of offspring were William, Frank, Martha, Carl, Hildegarde, Arna, Harry, and Helen. We have some photographs of that stern looking group. Frank worked in a cigar store in Silver Creek NY and took off to the Yukon never to be heard of again. I remember visiting Harry and Eva in the LA area.
I have just started compiling information, some anecdotal, of the family. Would be glad to share.
Best regards,
Bob

My computer has been acting up the last few days, so I was not able to join in the discussion (though I was aware of it). Jeanette LeValley Johnson was the daughter of John Cook LeValley and his first wife, Betsy Wheeler--further ancestry known on both. The 1850 census lists her both at home and at the home of her sister, Adeline Tibbets (who had married their first cousin Douglas Tibbets Sr.)

Franklin Jackson LeValley was another first cousin of theirs. His second son bore the same name, but was known as Frank--and this is the Koehn connection. To further complicate things, the first son, William, married Jeanette's half-sister, Augusta.

You don't want me to even start on the LeValley-Tibbets or LeValley-Oliver intermarriages. Let's just say there were a lot of kissing cousins.
In 1910,1920 and 1930 they were in Antelope, Logan County, OK.
I have a Wilhelm Koehn born 1851, Heinrich J. Koehn born 1853, John Carl Martin Koehn born 1856, and Louise Koehn born 1859. All were brothers and sister. All immigrated to the US. Louise went to Wisconsin, other three went to my home area of Niagara County, New York. John Carl Martin Koehn was my great grandfather from Gros Datrow, Mecklenburg, not far from Federow and Kargow. Name was originally spelled Kohn with an umlot over the "o". I suspect that my Koehns were related to others in this thread but am still looking for a positive connection. Replies to my email are OK. Details are at my WorldConnect site at http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o...
Lyn,

Wilhelm Koehn, Lena (Linderman), Anna Koehn, and August Koehn arrived at Castle Garden, NY on November 12, 1888 on the "Moravia". The birth date of Wilhelm was 1851 and your Charles Koehn was 1860. This means that they could be brothers or cousins, but not father and son. It is worth further research if your Koehns came from the same area of Germany as mine.
Bob

So many Northern Germany Lutherans went to Wisconsin by traveling from the drop off point in NYC, through upstate NY through Ohio and Michigan and finally settling in WI. While many of my Koehns settled in Western NY, some ended in Wisconsin. However, I am still searching for connections with the WI bunch. Appleton, WI, newspaper clippings from my grand-aunt's scrapbook have names that should link to my NY ancestors but I have not yet found those links. Unfortunately the names in Dianne's list don't connect, at least not yet.

Anyone with the following names?; John Koehn, Elizabeth Stark, sons George (Martha Christon), Jacob and Phillip, daughters Anna (Tyne) and Aby (Thiesenhusen). Any information would be welcome.

All of the people listed in my earlier query stayed in Russia when my Grandmother was a very young girl. She thinks some went to Canada after the first world war and my Jakob Koehn and Suzanna Voth died in Russia. Apparently some of Jakob's siblings went to the U.S. No Augusta or Wilhelm were ever mentioned. But you never know.

Mostly my Grandmother's memory, who is still alive, and her mother's family bible. Marriage dates came from EWZfiles which I have access through a local Historical society and a couple dates from the Grandma Database. But mostly from my Grandmother. She is 90 this year so I had to give her one name every couple days. Her mind is stil very sharp. She has some great stories to go with some of the people. We also have a complete picture of all the people mentioned in the earlier query. My grandmother only remembers the first four couples names in the photo. I am glad to have gathered all her info before she passes on.

To add to my earlier query. These are the 12 children under my Gr. Gr Grandfather Jakob David Koehn.Whose father was David Koehn married to a Anna or maybe Maria Wendel or Wedel. (family bible states Anna) Maybe through these grandchildren I might be able to find a connection.

Heirich Koehn and Maria?
Jacob Koehn and Helena?
David Koehn
Johann Koehn and Anna Schwester
Peter Koehn
George Koehn and Maria?
Elizabeth Koehn and Johann Regehr
Katharina Koehn and Johann Jacob Goertzen(my line)
Helena Koehn and Jacob Berg
Maria Koehn and Abram Wiebe
Anna Koehn and ? Friesen
Suzanna Koehn and Cornelius Tealman

I also have a picture of most of the siblings and their spouses. Would be great to find a connection somewhere.

Regards,
Sandi

I would be interested in the Appleton, WI names. Louis Koehn married for the second time there in Appleton to a Marie Koch Regolin in 1904. She was widowed with 7 children and he was a widower with 3 (although his children were grown). His children were Louis, Lena Minnie, and Elizabeth Dora Koehn. The girls married Cole brothers.

Hi Lisa,

It is probably best to start with a few general sites.

Resources for German Genealogy on the Internet:
www.germanroots.com

-and-

Introduction and Links to Resources:
http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/

Also,

www.familysearch.org

When posting a message it is best to give further details such as ages, birth and death dates. If not known, then an approximate year would be good. This will especially be true for a common surname of Rogers. You might find in your research that Koehn will be spelled Cohen or Kohn.

Best of luck!

Kathleen

I have a Janette LeValley born about 1838 in Lockport, New York. I am looking for her parents and siblings. I don't know what family she belongs to. She is living in the household of Adolphus Tibits in the 1850 census. They are in Lockport, Niagara, New York. Janette married Martin V Johnson about 1855. They have some children there, then move to Lapeer Co Michigan and settle. I'd be happy to share what I have, thanks. Tina

I fell into the LeValley family by accident. I was following Willis Johnson and found his parents on his marriage certificate, which stated mother was Janette LeValley. She states she was born in Lockport New York in 1837. I looked at the 1850 census and she was in the household of Douglas Tibbets in Lockport New York. Franklin LeValley is also in Lockport at that time, and I'd like to put her in his family, but haven't been able to.

Family history says that great-grandfather Charles H Koehn jumped ship (down south) meaning not New York. There were many Koehn's that came in through Galveston TX and New Orleans LA. If he did jump ship there wouldn't be any entry record.
He died in Cleveland OH and believe he had 2 sisters, 2 brothers and possible mother there.
He and his wife and children are on the 1900 Cook County Illinois (Town of Lake) - name is spelled Kahn. May not have been literate in English and perhaps German as well or just went with the phonetic spelling because it was easier at the time.

On the same sheet is another family of Kahn's (Koehn)
All born Germany
Adolph (head) born July 1841 age 58 immigrated 1881 sausage maker
Frances (wife) born March 1837 age 63 immigrated 1881 married 35 years no children
John (nephew) born Sept 1879 age 20 immigrated 1898 beer brewers apprentice

I don't know if the second family is connected to mine or not - or the time frame for your John.
