Hi Greta, Lisa and Kyle. I have done a lot of research on all three of the Koepp Families in New Braunfels, Seguin and La Vernia and have not seen a case of CMT on any death certificates or otherwise. If you want to review these documents please go to the following link and you can view death/birth certificates http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 If you have questions please email me at keyserroll@theriver.com. Erp 11/18/1891 in Wahkiakum County, Washington. Christine is Jacqueline Erp's grandmother and her interview can be read in "Water Under the Bridge" Oral Histories from Grays River Valley by Ruth Busse Allingham.

Peter F. I have a bit of Brix info around here, feel free to ask questions and I'll see if I can answer them.
I'm not sure how much info I have on Anton's brothers and sisters, but I know I've seen some Erps in with the info I have.
Helen Brix Dunbar (my grandmother) was really into the genealogy. I wish I'd gotten to meet her while she was alive, we would have had some great conversations.
Good to hear from you, look forward to sharing info if possible.
Sincerely
Sean Dunbar

My grandmother's maiden name was Bertha Bortz. She was born in Wisconsin. Her family was from Pomerania, Germany. Her mother (who was not wed at the time) died at age 16 not knowing that her child had survived. She had this child by a farmhand on her parent's farm in Wisconsin, in 1919. His name was Herbert. I need to do a bit of research before I come up with his last name, but I do have this information. I am interested in knowing what became of HIM and HIS FAMILY (I assumed he moved back to Germany, but I'm not sure- he was not listed in the census taken around this time). Does this story sound familiar to anyone out there? If this is the Bertha Bortz you are interested in, we are in Illinois, and she is still alive. I'm not sure this is the same person you are interested in, but I thought I would give it a try. I believe both Bertha and Bortz are common names.

Hi Valerie,
My Dad is also 65, and he and his family did live in Alaska for quite a while, so your Dad probably remembers my Dad! My dad's mom, Helen, was really into the genealogy...she was collecting all kinds of info on the Kentucky Dunbars for Luther as well as info on her own family. She really enjoyed the research and meeting new people, as far as I can tell (she died before I was born).
My e-mail address is : seanl@shasta.csuchico.edu if you'd like to write me back directly rather than through this message board.
Hope to hear from you.
Sean
PS...I think we are 3rd cousins, not 4th cousins...my mistake!

My gg-grandmother was Matilde Koepp Kemnitz (b.9/14/1857 WI, d.1/8/1923). I'm trying to trace her parents and/or siblings. My best guess from Marquette Co. cemetery records is that her parents were Michael (b.8/27/1822, d.5/2/1886) and Caroline ? Koepp (b.2/4/1831, d.1/9/1899), just based on dates and locations. Does anyone have any info on Matilde or Michael and Caroline? Thanks in advance.

Bertha was my mother's mother. She had two natural children - Marge now about 86 and Elsie deceased would be about 82. She also had an "adopted" child - Robert now about 80. Family story is that she came over on a boat from Austria at 16. She spoke german until war broke out; speaking language of enemy was "bad". She wasn't as fluent in English so many stories were lost. Daughter Elsie refused to tell about family past.

They migrated to the US sometime in the 1890's.

They lived in a number of places in the US, from the midwest (maybe Wisconson, not sure) to Texas to Iowa and finally to South Dakota.

I would be interested in more information anyone has, especially if it goes back further in Germany.

He married Frances Hoeffner in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, on January 21, 1916. He spent the last part of his life in Vale, South Dakota. I am trying to begin a lineage tree on his side of the family and have only limited information. Can anyone help?

Ferdinand Barbara Koepp

I am trying to find information on the pre-U.S. ancestry of Ferdinand Koepp and his wife, Barbara Dinkle (Dinkel?). I know that when they first arrived in the U.S. they settled in Wisconsin (like many other German families!), and then homesteaded in Canton, South Dakota, in about 1865. Ferdinand died in the winter of 1868/9, and his wife the following summer. They had six children: William, Sophia, George, Caroline Henrietta ("Carrie", who married William A. Bonney), Margaret Wilhelmina (married a man named Dunbar), and my great grandmother, Louise Fredricka (who married Jesse Niles). Birthdates and deathdates pretty much all unknown, except as stated.

Koepp in Texas

There are many Koepp's in LaVernia, Texas where my grandfather (Fritz Heinrich Ernst Koepp)was born. I believe they came from Germany a long time ago. I have information on his parents and siblings but can't find it now because I'm in the process of moving. I will post it once I find it. We don't know the rest of the family personally.

Fritz had four daughters and a son (Velma, Ellen, Nancy, Charles and Rose Ann). A hereditary disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth runs in our family. We don't know if it came from the Koepp side or not.

I would be very interested if anyone knows of other cases of CMT in the Koepp family. Please contact me at gretajacobs@hotmail.com

Bertha Koepp

A Bertha Koepp was my mother's mother. This was her married name. The story told was that Bertha came by boat from Austria. I do not know much more. There may be secrets that the family kept. My mother married James Hanauer and lived in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
I have or had, he may have passed away by now, an uncle Robert (BobbY) Koepp that also lived in Milwaukee. He "retired" to Watersmeet Michigan. I last saw him at my mother's funeral in '93. Uncle Bobby was not actually my mother's brother. He was taken in by the family; he probably was related but I don't think he was adopted.

Hello, Distant Cousin!
It's been so long (3 1/2 years) since I posted that message, I'd forgotten all about it!
I haven't made any progress, but then, haven't really taken the time, either.
Thank you so much for responding! My Dad, who is a great grandson of Ferdinand and Barbara, will be so excited. He's been working on his geneaology a long time.
Do you have information on any of the other sons and daughters of Ferdinand and Barbara?
--Valerie Smith
Margaret Koepp is my great grandmother. She married my great grandfather, Virgil McKnight Dunbar. They had three sons, Bob (Robert), Mark, and Luther (my grandfather). They lived in Montana for a while, then eventually moved to northern Washington (Methow Valley). Margaret is buried in the cemetery in Pateros, Washington. I have more specific info if you need it. I am also trying to trace the Koepp name back. Let me know if you find anything new!
--Sean Dunbar

He did email me this, though:

"I remember some Dunbars came to visit with Grandma Louise Niles (Koepp) one summer when I was maybe about ten years old. I don't recall any details about them or their visit except I had the impression they were from Alaska and I think they had a son about my age."

My Dad was the baby in his family, and is 65. Does your Dad have any recollections like this?? Wouldn't THAT be wild!

--Valerie

I have very limited information on my fathers side, I didn't meet him until I was 22 when he lived in Midland, Texas.

My fathers name is Gary Wayne Koepp,b:4-11-54 and I am pretty sure still living possibly in Texas. His father was retired from the Air Force at Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, IL and his name was Clifford Koepp. I also know that his mothers name was Cleo, have no idea where from or parents or siblings.

I do know they have a daughter Lynn who resides close to me in New Baden, IL which is where my father lived with his family in High School in the early 1970's. I also have an uncle, not sure of his name, that is developmentally disabled.

Last contact I had with my fathers about 4 years ago, I believed that my grandfather Clifford had moved back to where his family was from in Wisconsin but not sure where. I do recall my father wanting to take me to a family reunion there when we had reunited long ago.

As I said, I have no contact with my father now and if any of this rings a bell, I would greatly appreciate the information. I do not neccesarily want to contact my father, just trying to find my roots for a family tree.

I can be reached at lisasolice@hotmail.com. Settled in Green County, WI and Stephenson Co, IL where he farmed. he married Maria Elizabeth Neeck, born in Luptow bei Pyritz, Pommern, Prussia Mar 26, 1865. She also immigrated to U.S. in 1883. They were married Jan 15, 1885 in Decatur, Green County, WI. They had 8 children. I'm looking for info on my great grandfather, Albert Koepp and his wife Ellen (Unknown) both born in Germany.
Hello again Valerie. Yes, the way I figure it, we should be 4th cousins.
I don't have much information on Margaret's siblings, in fact, I think I only remember having George and Louise mentioned in my information. It has also been a few years since I have done any serious research...I'm finding that my German roots are the most difficult to trace.
Interestingly enough, if you do a search for Caroline Koepp on Ancestry.com, you can find a Caroline Wilhelmina Louise Koepp, who was born in Germany and who died in Wisconsin. However, there are different names listed for Caroline's parents. I was wondering if it's possible that this Caroline could be a cousin/relative...note the similarity in names (Margaret's middle name was Wilhelmina, etc.). I wrote a message to the provider of that information, so hopefully I can find out something new.
I spoke with my Dad on the phone about finding your post last nite, and he was wondering if you are connected with the Thornleys and/or Clara Smith (who he says was one of his Dad's favorite cousins). I will have to check my genealogy box before I write again...simply operating on memory here!
Good to hear from you, cousin!
--Sean

Frances Hoeffner's father and my great great grandfather were cousins. I have this lineage line at work and it won't be until Monday that I can get it, but I'm pretty sure, I have Frances's husbands name...and if I don't; we have a mutual cousin at the Watertown Historical society (Your Frances and his gr. gr. grandfather were siblings).
