John Michel Kohler was born in Au, Tyrol, Austria in the year 1805. Died 1874. He married Maria Anna Moosbrugger in Tyrol. Eight children were born to them. Three died in infancy. The remaining children were: Jodak Kohler-died Oct. 28, 1917, Theresia Kohler Weller-died Mar. 11, 1902, Casper Kohler died in Portland Oregon, Maria Tose Kohler died as a Benedicton nun at St. Joseph, MN. Michel John Kohler who lived in Sheboygan, WI for many years and died there. His first wife died very suddenly. About a year after her death he married Marie Theresia Natter (born in Mellau, Tyrol in 1828-died Jan. 2, 1913). A few months after his second marriage he left for America with his wife and the five children by his former marriage. His second wife bore him ten children. They were: Marian A. Tauer born Aug 18, 1854-died July 4, 1924, Joseph Simon Kohler born July 27 1855-died Oct. 1921, Anna Margerate Ubel born Sept. 29, 1856-died Jan 18, 1905, Edward Kohler born Jan. 15, 1859-died July 19, 1917, John Jacob Kohler born Dec 29, 1859-died June 23, 1937, George Kohler born May 21, 1862-died Jan. 5 1943, A. Catherine Bergman born Nov. 24, 1863-died June 4, 1925, Ignatius A. Kohler born Dec. 17, 1865-died Sept. 5, 1945, Mary Angela born July 22, 1868-died April 25, 1903, John Baptist Kohler born Nov. 5, 1870-died Jan. 24, 1947. John Michel Kohler and Marie Theresia Natter Kohler came to America in 1854. They traveled by sailboat. Their voyage took 54 days. They stopped at Gelena, Illinois where their first child, Marian, was born. When she was six weeks old they settled at Vadnais Lake near Little Canada where they bought an 80 acre farm which was next door to John Kohler's brother in law (from former marriage) Casper Moosbruger. They came to the United States planning to become cheese manufacturers, which they did do. However, they drifted into butter making. Eventually the business was carried on by his son, Edward.
