I was thrilled to death to hear from you. I will be sending you some information. I was in contact with a Judge Romang from Oklahoma, who was to gather some information on the Romangs, however he passed on before he could get it sent. Thanks so much again, also if you would email me your mailing address I will send you some pictures.

Re: Kohli

My gggrandparents were Xavior Mauderly and Maria Romang. Through them there are 2 connections with Kohli's. Their daughter Lena Mauderly married a John Kohli. I don't know much about them but I know they had at least 4 children. The only one I know of was Christopher Kohli. He died in Burlington Junction, MO on Sept. 4,1978.

My grandmother always insisted that a Romang, sister of her grandmother, also married a Kohli. She had actually met some of them because I have a couple of pictures with Kohli names. Xavior and Maria Mauderly had a daughter Mary who married Wilbert Halberstadt. They left IA and settled in Delphos,KS. They had children Clyde and Florence. Clyde married but he and his wife didn't hae any children. Florence married Everett McKain. They had a son Rex McKain who died a few years ago. My grandmother said she went to visit the Halberstadt's when she was a young girl, about 1913, and stayed with them 2 or 3 months. Almost all of the pictures she had were of the town of Delphos or of her with Florence Halberstadt McKain. But 2 had Kohli's. One was of my grandmother(Martha Mauderly), Florence Halberstadt, and Mary Kohli. There was one photo that had the same women. It said John Kohli and sister Mary. I wonder if this Mary Kohli could be your ggrandmother? I also have mention of a nephew Chris Kohli who attended Xavior Mauderly's funeral. Did your ggrandmother have brother's John and Chris? My scanner copier is broke so I can't email the pictures to you. If you can send me your address I can have copies mailed to you. My email address is rkendrick@myfmtc.com. I'm hoping you have someone who can verify the identity of these people.

I've also noticed the baby pictures of Clyde and Florence Halberstadt were taken at the same photography studio as the wedding picture I have for Lena Mauderly and John Kohli. It was in Minneapolis,KS. I have no idea if the 2 Kohli families are related.

The information I have on the Romang's is that they didn't all come to America together. The biographical history of Montgomery and Adams County, Iowa, 1892 says Maria Romang was born in Switzerland Nov. 11,1835. She married Xavior Mauderly in IL on Dec.21, 1855. She came to America with her brother about 2 months previous to her marriage. Her parents came to this country later and lived in IL for a time. The Father died while they were in IL but the Mother came to Adams Co. and died in Nodaway twp. in 1885. They came to IA in 1865. I believe there may have been children already in this country or ones that may have come after. The Father's name was John and the Mother Anna M. She is buried in the Nodaway,IA cemetary. Other children I know of are John,Jacob,Christian, and Maria Magdalena. All but Christian came to IA. Christian stayed in IL and died in Waverly,IL in 1930. I have a picture of Cristian Romang that my grandmother thought might have Kohli's in it. John and Jacob never married. Jacob is buried next to his Mother. Maria Magdalena married John Michael Kraft. They are buried a couple of miles from here. There is another possible son August Romang that was killed in the Civil War.

Let me know if any of these names ring a bell with anyone?

Yes, my closest Kohli's are from Delphos. Mary E. Kohli (my Great grandmother married William Henry Warsop in Minneapolis Kansas. I have more on the Warsop's if you need. Do you have anything on the Romang's or Stevens?

Sherri,
From my records, there were two Featheringill women who married into the Kohli family. They were both daughters of John and Martha Ramsey Featheringill. Eliza Jane married Peter, and Nancy Adaline married Jacob. Peter and Jacob were brothers, and sons of Christian and Margaret Berkey Kohli.
Sometime later, Jacob and Nancy's son, Glenn Jessie Kohli, married Mae Featheringill, daughter of Tell and Lavina Palmer Featheringill.
I don't have anything on the Reese family. If this information links you to us, I would like to share the family history. It would be nice to fill in the missing branches.
Deb

Hi Judy,
Can you give me a birth year for your father? I know one of John Kohli's (1813-1872) sons, Josiah (1837-1902), has grandchildren living in the Defiance, Ohio area. There are quite a number of our Kohli's living in Indiana.
The Kohli name is not very common; there is a different branch of them from India. I don't know if they connect somewhere in Europe.
Frantz came from Canton Bern, Switzerland in 1819 with his wife, Christiania, and three children, Christian, Elizabeth, and John. They settled in Holmes County, where they show up on tax and census records. The name has been spelled the way it sounds; Kolley, Kohley, Coley, Choli, along with the correct one.
It sounds like your father descends from Frantz, I just need more information to help you place him with his family,
I'll help if I can, Deb
Most of the group from last year, was descendants of Daniel, son of John and Barbara.
Mary Ellen McOwen is going to try and make it down from Mich, and Melanie Kohli's family from Holmes County, will be here. Her father-in-law is 80 years old, I met him for the first time in November
Mary Ellen's link is Emanuel, Daniel's brother.
Melanie's father-in-law is connected through John and his first wife, Verena Snavely.
We are hoping to get more branches of the Kohli family interested in meeting .
We have old picture, deeds, and family information to share.
It would be nice if you could come.

Debra

Anyone doing research on the Kohli family, should try using the variety of spellings found in records.
Some of the ones I've come upon are: Kohley, Kolley, Kohlie,Coly, Coley, Colley. Then there are the ones who pronounce it with an i at the end.
The story I've been told, goes like this. There was once a famous black race horse by the name of Colley. When someone wanted to describe something dark, they would say it was "black as Colley's (backside)".
We can thank him for yet a new variety of spellings; Coli, Kolli.

Bio, Jacob Kohli, son of Christian Kohli and Margret Berkey

History of Allen County, Ohio. Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co., 1885.

JACOB KOHLI, farmer, P.O. Columbus Grove, Putnam County, was born April 1, 1839, in Holmes County, Ohio, son of Christian and Margret [sic] (Berkey) Kohli, former of whom, a native of Germany, came to Holmes County in 1821, when about thirteen years of age; latter a daughter of John and Christina Berkey, natives of Pennsylvania, and who died in Holmes County, Ohio.

Jacob Kohli, who was a son by his father's first marriage, received a common school education, and began life for himself at eighteen years of age. He learned wagon manufacturing, at which he worked until August 25, 1861, when he enlisted in Company K, Fourteenth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, served three years, was discharged and immediately re-enlisted as a veteran in the same company and regiment, and was discharged at the close of the war as a sergeant. He participated in the battles of Chickamanga, Mission Ridge, Jonesboro and others, his life being twice saved by the bullet striking his gun barrel while in the act of shooting; in the engagement at Goldsboro, he was color-bearer of his regiment.

He came with his father to Putnam County, Ohio, settling near Columbus Grove, in 1845. Our subject was married, August 24, 1865, to Nancy Featheringill, a native of Putnam County, Ohio, born October 3, 1846, daughter of John and Martha (Ramsey) Featheringill, who came to Putnam County, from Franklin County, Ohio, in 1833. The father died in 1867, aged sixty-three years, the mother is still living aged seventy-six years. To this union were born nine children: John C., Charles H., Annie M., William F., Peter N., Mary I., Theodore G., Brice J., and Jesse G.

Mr. Kohli came to his present farm in the fall of 1870. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

[I have no other info on this family]
