POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Jefferson County, Kentucky as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: WILLIAM OWEN KOLB
Born: Oct. 21, 1928
Date of loss: July 21, 1951 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Hello Scott;

regretfully no, no match there. My relatives were born in Steffisburg and Oppligen, and immigrated to the US directly through Havre, and to New York, then to Tuscarawas Ohio, and on to Moniteau Missouri. We have no Sophia's in our family. My immigrated ancestor married two Elizabeth s - first one died after childbirth here in the states, 2nd one lived a long full life with him in Missouri.

This is a far reach but I have to try. I have an ancestor by the name of Maria Sophie Baumann who was born in 1804 in Bollwiller, Alsace, France. According to family papers she married a man named KOLB but I have no further information as to where they married, more than likely Bollwiller or his first name or where he came from.
Being as she was born in 1804 I would imagine that they married about 1824 or that time frame.
Any help would be appreciated as I haven't really been able to go futher with this line.
Please feel free to write me at: wsb221@stny.rr.com.
Thanks,
Scott Baumann
Hello again, when I first found your note earlier this week, I was so excited, that I didn't pay close enough attention to the dates - I see now, (that I take time to read the dates, and not just the names) That your search probably ended exactly where mine did. I have the same Johannes Jakob Kolb, married to Anna Schindler (2nd wife) and Catherine Krebs (first wife) - I have David Kolb recorded as the son of Catherine and Johann, and two other children born of Anna - Johannes, and Christian.

I have nothing else beyond this, except a mention passed down to me, of a "Peter Kolb" No birthdate, nor birthplace, whose wife was Elisabeth Pur, no birthdate or place of marriage, but they had a daughter whose name was only recorded as "Miss Kolb" and she was Christened on May 4,1595 and it says she was born in Steffisburg, Bern Canton Switzerland. I do not know of anything further than this, but my father says that as he understood his family ancestry, they were originally from Germany, and considered themselves "German-Swiss".

Hello Floyd;
Are these Kolbs' your ancestors? They are mine as well. Christian Kolb lived in Oppligen, Bern Canton, Switzerland, and died there in July 1831, right after his son Jakob (last child - born in April 1831. He and his wife, Annie Maedor Kolb, had three children: Christian (jr)born 1825, and a daughter Anna Maria, born in 1827. Annie remarried to a John Senn, and together they had four or five children.
Jakob, left Switzerland in 1852 from Havre, and entered the United States through New York - Ellis Island. John and Annie Kolb Senn emigrated to the US in 1855, and followed Annie's son Jakob to Tuscarawas, Ohio, and then to Moniteau County Missouri. After a couple of years, they left Moniteau county and moved to Fort Dodge Iowa where they both died around 1870.
Tina,

Hello, I've been away from this for some time and was just reviewing your reply.

Since I placed my message I have found the following information:

My Kolb ancestor was Anna Catherine Kolb, b. January 23, 1854 in Kentucky, m. August 16, 1870 in Louisville to Adam Voll, my ggrandfather, d. July 24, 1913 in Louisville, KY. She was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, KY, a different cemetery than where my ggrand father was buried. I have no explanation for this.

Anna Catherine was also known as Katharina or Kate Cook. Her stepfather's name was Mathias Kuch. Her children married into the Axman(n), Minsterman, Geywitz, and perhaps the Dye families.

Records show that Martha Kolb, b. March 07, 1847, married Valentine Schaefer. She was from Saxony, Germany, d. February 24, 1928, and was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Louisville, KY. This is the same cemetery where many of my Voll ancestors are buried, including Adam Voll, who was Anna Catherine Kolb's husband. I suspect but don't know in what way Martha and Catherine are related.

Margaretha Katherina Kolb b. 5/16/1849 may have been related to Catherine.

In your message you mention the name Koch which should be the same as Cook or Kuch. I am sure we are closely connected at this level of our ancestry. On Catherine and Adam's marriage bond Mathias Kuch is listed as Catherine's stepfather. Catherine was a Kolb and this indicates her mother was married at least once before but I don't yet know who her mother was.

Have you found any additional info on this family? thank you, bob voll

Bob, I looked at the Cave Hill Cemetery website. My Kolbs seem to all be buried in Section P, Lot 14, which is not the same as your Anna Catherina, who was buried in Section 8. Is your Anna Catherina the same as the 6 year old Catherine Kolb listed on the 1860 Louisville census in the family of John and Charlotte Kolb, with brothers Phillip and John? I still have to think the two families are somehow related.

My Conrad Kolb and Katherina Koch Kolb came to the US from Germany in 1850 and were in Louisville by December 1850. He owned a saloon there.

I have tried to find my g g grandfather named Johann Adam Kalb (Kolb).

For some time I thought I had found him as John Kolb who was in the Civil War.

But my distant cousin STUE80, a descendant of Martha Kalb (Kolb) and Valentine Schaefer, checked it out.

On September 23, 2004, he wrote me.

"According to the pension records . . . John Kolb married Charlotte Stapp on 8-7-1853 at the German St. Paul's Church in Louisville. She remaried on 10-7-1864 to a Matthias Kach. She had at the time of his death 3 minor children under the age of 16. They were Anna Catherine born 1-23-1854. John Philip born 11-3-1855. and Mary Rosine born on 10-7-1861. The pastor of the church was Charles Lewis Daubert. She lived, according to the papers on Jefferson Street between what appears Kimble and Shelby Street.

On 6-7-1866 the county of Jefferson Kentucky appointed Andrew Kolb guardian of the 3 children.

I see no mention of a previous marriage for this John Kolb so I cannot put these two families together.

He died in a prisoner of War camp on Belle Island in Richmond."

I have more information of your John Kolb and his brothers.

Conrad Kolb is of a separate Kolb family, and probably has the most Kolb descendants in current Louisville.

I have recently found my g g grandfather Johann Adam Kalb; who didn't come to the United States until late 1860.

James L. Kolb is a descendant of Johann Adam Kolb.

Hi, I believe my bunch of Kolbs descended also through Johannes through his son Tilman and his son Thomas to Benjamin who may have been gggrandfather. They did the S.C. trip to Alabama, then eventually to Texas where my father, son of Thomas K. Kolb was born. Do you have any info on that line from Johannes? I'm trying to determine who this Benjamin was, who with his wife Nancy were living with a whole bunch of my ancestors in Alabama in 1850. He could be my gggrandfather. Thanks, Elizabeth Kolb Peterson

I don't know that I have what you want, but I have a book written on the Dielman/Johannes line. I will check it when I get a chance.
If you are in Texas, we are having a KOLB reunion on Oct. 18, 2008 from 10 am to 4 pm at Uvalde, Texas (west of San Antonio) to celebrate our Kolb heritage. We are out of the line of Dielman/Johannes/Jacob (Jehu's brother, right?)/Jonathan, Sr./Jonathan, Jr./Henry James Yancy/Robert F. and William Henry Kolb. It might be a good place to learn some about the Kolb's. In 2007 I attended the 300th Anniversary Reunion of the Kolb Brothers coming to America at Skippack, PA. We plan on having Kolb information, including that of the Y-DNA project, on hand.

FYI --
I had done a RAOGK favor to photo Col. Abel Kolb's murder marker and gravesite marker. Also found this nice bio on Abel Kolb, talks about his parentage and his wife's, and his military history ....
http://www.southerncampaign.org/newsletter/v3n5.pdf

thanks, julie
