In response to your post and all the other posts on the Koldens. There were two Hans Koldens (Hanson). My grandfather came from Lom Norway and went to ND and then on to Minnesota, Beltrami, which is close in Clearwater Ct., north of Bagley, Minnesota. There was another one that was in Minnesota, but I think he ended up, or his son ended up in mid WI. somewhere. You should contact the others that have responded to my post about those Koldens in Minnesota, or WI. By looking on the census, you may be able to find him. My Grandfather was 65 when his last child was born, and she is now 81 years old and my oldest Aunt is 95 and still living, so I am getting accurate information on my Grandfather. I was 2 when he died in Bagley, Minnesota, and he came to this country when he was 21 years old. Good luck.

The Rasmus I have would of been my grandfather's brother. Rasmus had a big farm west of Hatton, ND. He had been married 3 times but I don't think he had any children. In a letter I have from a relative in Canada it says he had to have housekeepers so he married them. The first 2 died and the last one outlived him. My grandfather Elef was his brother. Elef was born 01-02,1867. He had 2 sisters that I know of, Anne Kolden (husband, George Johnson) and a half sister I think Barbro Kolden (husband, Pedar Barbro). They had another sister but I don't know her name. She got married in USA and had 2-3 children and when she died her husband moved to California. The brothers were, Sam Kolden, Ingebrit (Imbert), Rasmus Kolden Thompson, Tom (Tron) Kolden, John Kolden and Elef Kolden. There were 2 others also but I don't know their names or if they came to America. I know one of the brothers stayed in Norway. John and Tom Kolden later moved to Canada. There was one of the brothers they lost track of after he came over here. They tried to locate him but never found him. I know my grandfather wrote letters and got letters from his sibblings. He died when I was a teen and I wish now that I talked to him more about this. I wasn't interested then. My dad, Herman went out to South Dakota when he was a teenager and helped Rasmus on his farm and Rasmus told him if he stayed and helped him on the farm someday the farm would be his. I guess there was so much iron in the water that dad got sick and couldn't stay there. This is why I know that he had no children. I think there is a few o Koldens in Vernon County but I never knew this until I started looking into this. I understand there is some by Bloomington I do not know if they are related to me or not. I haven't had time to check this out. If this sounds familiar please let me know. Thanks

I have a Rasmus Kolden in my family. He was from Loms, Norway. My grandfather, Elef Kolden was his brother. All of the brothers and sisters but a couple came over to America and first settled in the Lacross and Viroqua, Wi area. Some later went to MN and SD and some to Canada. My grandfather stayed in the Viroqua area. Some of the brothers went by the name of Thompson. I don't know if this is connected to you or not.

Hi,
I just read your entry on
Ancestry.com about Syver Kolden. I do have a Syver Kolden who had his oldest son, Tosten, on 14 Feb 1854. I know from Census records that the son's name was changed to Thomas. Do you have anymore info on Syver Kolden or his wife? I do not have anymore info on Tosten, though.
Jan
My email is saltshaker1951@yahoo.com.
My name is Patricia Ann (Kolden)Meehan and live in Janesville, Wi. I don't know if there is a conection between us or not. I have been trying to find my family tree and cant get past my grandfather, Elef Kolden b. 01-02-1867). He came here from Loms, Norway when he was young and lived and farmed in the Genoa-Viroqua, Wi area. He married Anna Bakken. His fathers name was Trin Samingson Kolden and his mother was Eldri Rasmusdatter Overli (don't know if I got this spelled right). One of them had been married before but I don't know which one. Their children were Anne, Sam, Rasmus (he called himself Thompson), Tom (Tron), John, Ingebrigt or Imbert, Elef, Barbro. I am not sure what order the children were born or if this is correct. The last son, Ingebrigt or Imbert disappeared shortly after he came to USA, at least they lost tract of him. They also had another girl, I don't know her name, she got married and died young.I know that John ended living in Canada although he lived in La Crosse, wi for awhile. If any of this sounds familiar please let me know. My e-mail is lespat2@sbcglobal.net Thanks

My Grandfather, Hans, had a brother named Syver Kolden, so maybe it was his brother. I have found the census from 1865, and 1875. I could E-mail you a copy if you felt this was your Grandfathers family. My Grandfathers Mothers name was Mari or Marit Erlandsdatter, and his Father was Hans Syverson. When was your Grandfather born, and do you have anymore information on his family? I am sorry I did not answer sooner, but I lost your first message, and just now found this again.

Hans is my Grandfather who died about 1950. He came to the US through Nova Scotia around the 1900's. I think he had a sister Marie, Sigli, a twin sister Rnelog. He also had 3 brothers, Ole, Ole, Elle. I think they were from the Lom area, around Gudbronsteadle (spell?) area. Any information would be appreciated. I think his last name was Kolden in Norway, but became Hanson in US. Thank you, Susan Anderson. e-mail me at swilanders@aol.com

Did Syver Kolden have a son named Torsten, later changed to Thomas, b. 14-Feb-1854? This Thomas married a woman named Mary Rasmusdatter, b. 13-Oct-1859, at the Lyster Church in Nelson, Buffalo, Wisconsin on 18-Mar-1859. They had five children: Syver, Laura, Robert, Albert, and Edmund.
I am trying to verify that this Mary Rasmusdatter was a sister of my grandmother Emma (Embjør) Teigen.)
Thank you.
