Hi,
My ggreat grandpa was Hall Koon and ggreat grandma was Almeda Dilts. My great grandpa was John Wesley Koon, the younger brother to your grandpa, Guy Koon. It's nice to see a cousin from this line. I find the Koon's on this side closed lipped. They didn't like to talk to much. It was wonderful to read the story about Hall Koon trying to get the union for the coalminers. I never really heard, but a few stories. Would love to know more about the Koon family.
Re: Looking for Koon

Hello Joshua, I am not related.

You can start by obtaining the marriage record for Alfred Koon and Bobetta Wilson in Harris County, Texas, and the death record for Bobetta in Richmond County, Georgia. They were married January 9, 1969. Bobetta died February 24, 1985.

It also looks like Alfred lived in Alabama and Georgia between 1988 and 1992.

Also, if this is your Alfred in the Texas Divorce Index, then he was married to Linda Joyce Duck and they had two children prior to Alfred marrying Bobetta, Lora Jean Koon, born 3 Feb 1964, and Alfred Lewis Jr. Koon, born 21 Sep 1965. Both born in Harris County. It also looks like Alfred Jr. died 20 Jun 1986 in Harris County.

Once you obtain the marriage record for Alfred and Bobetta, and find out who their parents were, I might be able to find something on them.

Hope this helps, RP
------
Texas Marriage Collection, 1814-1909 and 1966-2002

Name: Alfred L Koon
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 9 Jan 1969
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1945
Age: 24
Spouse: Bobetta Wilson
Spouse gender: Female
Spouse Est Birth Year: abt 1949
Spouse Age: 20
Marriage County: Harris
Marriage State: Texas
Source: Texas Marriage Index, 1966-2002
-----------
Georgia Deaths, 1919-98

Name: Bobetta Koon
Death Date: 24 Feb 1985
County of Death: Richmond
Gender: F (Female)
Race: White
Age: 36 years
County of Residence: Richmond
Certificate: 024436
Date Filed: 15 May 1985
-----------
Social Security Death Index

Name: Bobetta Koon
SSN: 449-82-3193
Born: 15 Sep 1948
Last Benefit: 30909 Augusta, Richmond, Georgia, United States of America
Died: Feb 1985
State (Year) SSN issued: Texas (1964)
----------
U.S. Public Records Index

Name: Alfred Lewis Koon
Birth Date: Jun 1944
Address: 4332 5th South Av #105, Birmingham, Alabama 35222-0201 (1989)
[1041 Burmingham St, Birmingham, Alabama 35217-1201 (1988)]
----------
U.S. Public Records Index

Name: Alfred L Koon
Birth Date: Jun 1944
Address: 60 Derby Country Dr, Ellenwood, Georgia 30049-1201 (1991)
[106 4th St, Grovetown, Georgia 30813]
----------
U.S. Public Records Index

Name: Alfred Koon
Address: 4332 S Av #105, Birmingham, Alabama 35222-1001 (1992)
-----------
Texas Divorce Index, 1968-2002

Name Estimated Birth Year Spouse Name Divorce Date County

Alfred L Koon abt 1945 Linda Joyce [Koon] 23 Jul 1968 Harris

Linda [Koon] abt 1947 Alfred L Koon 23 Jul 1968 Harris
-----------
Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997

Name: Lora Jean Koon
Date of Birth: 3 Feb 1964
Gender: Female
Birth County: Harris
Father's Name: Alfred Lewis Koon
Mother's Name: Linda Joyce Duck
Roll Number: 1964_0008

Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997

Name: Alfred Lewis Jr. Koon
Date of Birth: 21 Sep 1965
Gender: Male
Birth County: Harris
Mother's Name: Linda Joyce Duck
Roll Number: 1965_0008
-----------
Texas Death Index, 1903-2000

Name: Alfred Koon Jr
Death Date: 20 Jun 1986
Death County: Harris
Gender: Male

I see a lot at Family Search. Everything is posted as I found it, so please read through to the end, where I have made a summary of my findings (and have all but 2 maiden names).

There's Hiram's (Vesta's dad's) death, which also gives his birth date and parents's names, which we already know from the census I posted:

Ohio Deaths 1908 - 1953
Names: Hiram Koon
Death date: 28 Dec 1919
Death place: Liberty, Washington, Ohio
Birth date: 16 May 1853
Birth place: Ohio
Age at death: 66 years - 7 mos - 12 days
Gender: Male
Marital status: Widowed
Race or color: Caucasian
Occupation: Farmer
Burial date: 30 Dec 1919
Cemetery name: Koon Cemetery
Father's name: Michel Koon, b.
Thank you for all that info, that is my grandfather,as Walter was my dad.
What I am having trouble finding is my Grandmother Graces' family history.I cannot find records of their marriage to find out her maiden name.
And I also have a photo of Vesta, his siblings, and HIS parents, which would be my great grandparents, and I have no names for them,it just says Mr.&Mrs. Kuhn,my dad and his brother actually started spelling our last name that way my mother said.
How do I find this info?

Koon will be buried tomorrow in Leesville, . . .

Representatives from the Army met with the soldiers' next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

In late November 1950, Koon was assigned to the Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, . . . Both were members of the 2nd Infantry Division advancing north of Kunu-ri, North Korea. On Nov. 25, the Chinese Army counterattacked the Americans in what would become known as the Battle of the Chong Chon (River). This combat was some of the fiercest of the war, and the 2nd Division initiated a fighting withdrawal to the south. Koon and Tye were captured by Chinese forces during the intense enemy fire, and subsequently died while in captivity from malnutrition and medical neglect.

In 2002, two joint U.S./Democratic People's Republic of Korea teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), investigated and excavated a mass burial site located 20 miles northwest of Kunu-ri, along the route taken by captured U.S. POWs being moved to permanent POW camps along the Yalu River. The teams recovered remains at the site believed to be those of several U.S. servicemen, including Koon and . . .

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory and JPAC also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in both Koon's . . . identification.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

GEORGE ADAM KOON and OPILICHAH

There are various places on the Internet that connect GEORGE ADAM KOON III (b 1807 SC, d MS) with a second wife named OPILICHAH.

GEORGE is the father of six children, the first four of which are born in SC and seem clearly to be the result of his first marriage to SARAH CROMER in that state. There is then a gap of about 13-14 years followed by two more children. That is usually an indicator of a second marriage. The family moves from SC to GA to AL where OBIDIAH NOEL KOON and DAVID LUTHER KOON are born in 1853 and 1856 respectively (DAVID's gravestone gives his birth as 1850, but that's another issue). They all finally settle in MS without any further census indication of a wife/mother.

I would like to know the original supporting evidence for the name OPILICHAH. I have tried to contact everyone who has used that name to get their source and each one I have been able to reach says it came from someone else or doesn't remember.

For those interested in this family, I suggest you look at the census for 1850 in Gwinnett County GA. If your census records are not indexed, look in the 36th Subdivision, Goldstone (sp?) District. Find a page with bold 171 on the upper right. Look at the family at the bottom. Note GEORGE (with last name spelled COON) is there, SARAH CROMER is not. There is a 20-year-old female, ELIZA ANN, who is in no other censuses for this family. She is gone in the 1860 census (in AL), but is in the right place and the right time here in 1850 to perhaps be the mother of both OBIDIAH (three years later) and DAVID (six years later) following their move to AL. Unfortunately, the 1850 census does not indicate family relationships. Note, too, that the birth state for everyone is SC.

You can make what you will of the SKINNER (sp?) family living with the KOONS. GEORGE is listed as Farmer; the other man is listed as Laborer. Might just be a young couple with their 11-month-old child, living and working there. Note that man's entry in the last column as Convict.

I'm eager to work with anyone interested in this family in resolving the issue of OBIDIAH/DAVID's mother and of tracking down the OPILICHAH references.

If you can connect back to him (there were three generations with that name), write to me. George Adam Koon III (b 1807) is my gggrandfather.

Paul Wilkes in Indiana

Would like to join this discussion as I don't think Sarah Cromer is the mother of either Obidiah or David Luther. If you look at the 1840 census for this family, you find three young boys (this accounts for Richard, John and George) and one young girl (this accounts for Susan). George III is listed as 30-40 (this is consistent with a birthyear of 1807). There is also a female aged 20-30 who is probably the mother of those four children, and could easily be Sarah Cromer. Everything matches at this point.

If you now look at the 1850 census, you find the four children (now 15, 14, 12, and 11), but no 39-40 aged wife and mother. There is a 20-year-old female named Eliza Ann, however. This census does not give relationships, so you can make of her what you will. She is too young to be the mother of George III's first four children, but is in the right time and place to become the mother of Obidiah and David, both of whom will be born within the next six years.

If you now look at the 1860 census, there is no wife, but all six children are there, including Obidiah and David. None of the later censuses show a wife. Perhaps I cannot convince all of you that I have the correct 1860 census, but, if not, I'd like to see a better match for this family.

As a further argument against the choice of Sarah Cromer as Obidiah and David's mother, look at the grouping of children's birthyears. Using approximate years gathered from various census pages, the first four children are all born between 1835 and 1840. Then there are no children until Obidiah is born in 1853. This is a gap of 13 years; then two more children close together. This pattern usually suggests a second wife.

Yes, I know David Luther's gravestone reads 1850 for his birthyear, but there are arguments against the accuracy of that. If anyone can verify that year, I'd love to see proof so I can resolve that conflict on my records.

I know some of those who are in this thread, and glad to meet the rest. In particular, I want to correspond with the one who is a descendant of Mary Ellen Koon. Would you please email me if you see this? If any of you others are in contact with that person, would you help me establish contact?

Always glad to find more cousins!!!!!!! Take care.

I am Paul Wilkes in Indiana.

Concerns about DNA testing for genealogy

Regarding genealogical DNA testing, here's a little more information to help calm fears about insurance companies using DNA information against us:

May 21, 2008

"President George W. Bush signed into law today the the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA - the first and only federal legislation that will provide protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in health care," said Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). "Americans can finally take advantage of the tremendous potential of genetic research without the fear that their own genetic information will be used against them."

Just a few weeks ago, GINA received overwhelming support in both the Senate, with a unanimous vote of approval, and the House of Representatives, where the legislation was passed by a landslide vote of 414-1.

The health insurance protections offered by GINA are expected to roll out 12 months after the bill is signed, whereas the employment protections will be fully realized in 18 months.

Specifically, the legislation protects against genetic discrimination by health insurers or employers by:
Prohibiting group health plans and issuers offering coverage on the group or individual market from basing eligibility determinations or adjusting premiums or contributions on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting issuers of Medigap policies from adjusting pricing or conditioning eligibility on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers may not request, require or purchase genetic information, and may not disclose genetic information. Similar provisions apply to employment agencies and labor organizations."

Everyone of us loses millions of skin cells every day, sheds hair (or get it cut), clip our nails, lick envelopes, and otherwise leave our DNA all over the landscape. We've been doing it all of our lives. If insurance companies wanted your DNA, they would have had it long ago.

Further, your name does not need to be associated with the test results in any way, if that's the way you want it done. You can collect the sample and then use only the surname to identify the sample. (FTDNA would like to keep the surname associated with the sample for research, but other information such as first and middle name, etc., can be left blank.)

The Coon/Coons/Coombs/Koontz, etc., etc., DNA research group is at FamilyTreeDNA.com There are 59 members and 30 have found a connection with another member. www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon
