I would be interested in sharing info with you. My Koons info also includes the previously mentioned Koons exiled to James Colony. I believe that would be Adam Koons. And ties to Pennsylvania. My more immediate Koons had ties to Franklin, Perry, Guernsey, Noble, & Allen Cos., Ohio. And ties to Texas.

I recently acquired a letter belonging to my great-grandfather's 2nd wife. It was a letter from F.M. Koons in Columbus, Ohio dated 1927, and added to that was a letter from Jonathan Koons in Illinois dated Jan 1878. It is a fairly well detailed genealogical history, with some information back to one Koons ancestor's exile to Jamestown Colony from Germany. Other names include Hughes, Snyder, Ott, Kegg, Weimer, Smouse Moler, McDaniel, Shoff, Manvel, Bishop, Page, Border. I would be happy to share this information. It is fairly detailed so perhaps a photocopy or scanned copy would be the best way to evalute the accuracy of the information.

When talking about the Witzki and Borzekofski people, please remember to use middle initials because there are more than one person by a certain name . . . several Martins, several Elizabeths.

I am a descendant of Michael and Anna Witzki. Here are my records. Many of the date for births and deaths are correct.

Michael and Anna had 5 children according to my records. Martin Jacob Witzki, Antenea (Tina), Dora, Barbara and Elizabeth.

Martin Jacob Witzki married Elizabeth Barzekofski. They had 10 children: Lena Witzki, Elizabeth Barbara Witzki, Paul Michael Witzki, Martin Frank Witzki, John Albert Witzki, Dorothy Catherine Witzki, Mary Margaret Witzki, Frank Martin Witzki, and twins borns in 1900 or 1901 that died shortly after birth.

If you have more information, please email me at darla.donley@yahoo.com

In the Taylor County, Iowa 1880 Census For Ebanezer Kimball and wife Amanda M. it indicates a William Koons living with them, age 54.

We show Ebanezer's wife Amanda M. as Coons as her maiden surname with ties to Fulton County, Illinois a daughter of David Henry Coons 1811-1875, and his wife Cynthia Ann 'Sinthy' Bush b. 1811.

QUESTION - Was the surname Coons or Koons ??
Re: Thomas Melville Koons

I figured there was little chance that Ilo was her maiden name... if the story is true, Ona Ilo's father was born a Sunday, but changed his last name to Ilo. Since there's hardly anybody in the census up to that point, it appears that it may be true. Interesting that you knew John Fletcher... they're up to about John Fletcher IV I think. I don't know much about John Jr.'s descendants. I think there are 3-4 kids... Deb, John (Jack), Christina and James. Deb's and Jack are the only two that I know anything about. To the best of my knowledge my parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents were not aware that there were cousins in Cincinnati.

That mention of Harriet Kurtz and Ingersoll prompted me to look and I do list Lewis Ingersoll as her father, not sure why I still show her maiden name as Kurtz in my database.

I don't see a Dwight Koons in my database... only Koons I can think of who died in KY was George W., artist and big-game hunter... he died in 1929 near Covington.

I have to think about Ilo's in Van Wert... most of them were around Piqua and/or Troy.

I bet it's been darn close to 8-9 years since I ran into anybody from our Koons' lines...

The last I knew there were still two Steve Koons in or around Dayton (I actually live in Kettering). If you called my house you likely got the answering machine. I'm much easier to reach by email at wd8dcx@aol.com

I'm just now leaving work... I'll try and send you some stuff later tonight. There is some information on Rootsweb that I posted a year or two after I started working on the genealogy, but I've since decided not to continue updating it.

My cousin in Piqua had a really nice website with quite a bit of information, but it disappeared 3-4 years ago, I guess. He laid a pretty solid foundation and my research is an expansion of his work.

Steve Koons

Hi... I don't have anything on the Reidy family... I just list that Rose or Rosa was married to Thomas M. Koons. I list two kids, Charles M. and Edward E., but have little in the way of dates or places for them, and no marriages.

Mary Ilo? that's seriously strange... my g-uncle Thomas Audrey Koons was married to Ona Ilo (they were in the Miami/Shelby county Ohio area)... I suspect in your case that Ilo was a middle name, not a last name?

Thomas M. would have been my 1st cousin 3x removed...

I'll send you a chunk of data when i get home from work tonight....

Steve Koons

I posted to you the wrong name of my great grandma. She was Nora Liechner or Liectner She was married to marland warren koonsI. I have pictures of grave stones with the names ect.
Annie was married to Warren Koons .
I also have a copy of "professional" chart that MarlandI had done in the 1950's. As I am new to this I have no clue as to how accurate it is.
I see that you are in contact with Helen Gene. I believe that she is my grandpa's sister or her daughter or grand daughter.
I would love to hear from her, as Judith Slates is my dad's cousin and we still hear from her, and I could try to get more info about the Slate's from her. I even have
Judy's dad's recipe for pancakes.
His father was;
Marland Warren Koons I. He was in the Navy in WWI. He died in 1965 or 64. He did outlive his son. His wife was Annie Bush
His father was;
Warren Koons. I have been told that Warren had a brother or step brother that was killed, but I don't know if that is correct.
Please post if you have more as I am very new to this.

I thought maybe she was one of mine... but she's not in my database. My line is from Frederick... but only have two Catherine's... one born abt 1760 or so and her niece, born abt 1792. My sister-in-law has Lambert's in Shelby Co, Ohio starting around 1836... no clue as to where they were before that.

So unless you have more clues... it looks like I've struck out! Assume you don't have her parents or siblings at this point?

Steve Koons, Dayton, Ohio

I am at a total loss. I have Mary Magaline Koontz b. 2-16-1856 in Tuscarawas Ohio. d 6-16-1906 in Burns, Oregon.
She married Johann Heinz in 1875 in Ohio. Here is where my confusion starts. I have recently came across their marriage certificate. She listed her name as (F (i think it says) Mary A Koons. I know absolutly nothing else about her parents and brothers or sisters. I have searched census and all the normal places to look. If anyone can shed some light on this line I would really be thankful.

Thanks so much
Deanna
Send me an e-mail that I can reply to with an attachment. The letter I have is dated 1878. It came to me with items that belonged to my great-grandfather (Al Sturman). His second wife was of Koons ancestry and the letter was in with the Sturman things that I inherited.

I can send you the information that I typed from the letter (getting it a little more concise), but I would also be happy to scan the letter - it has a letterhead indicating the writer was in Ohio, which coorelates with the information about my "step-great-grandmother's" background.

You are the first to respond to the post. lathropenginelady@yahoo.com Pat Hidy

She married Jacob Lambert. I know of two children, Annie Catherine Lambert and Samuel S Lambert, but I can't find anyone who has this Catherine Koons in their database, so thought I'd try here.

Mike S.

Hi Steve, I think we are talking apples and oranges here. I think we belong to separate trees. If you look at the one world tree, I think we are talking about 2 different ancestors. Thomas M and Thomas Melville are 2 different people. I saw your Ona Ilo and it eems to me there were 2 Ephraims also. In mine Thomas Melville had a brother Carl born in 1868. I didn't exactly know John Fletcher-I just knew there was a brother to my grandfather named John. It is hard because the names are so alike. What do you think? Kay

Re: Thomas Melville Koons

Ilo was my mother's middle name- Mary Ilo Fleming Koons. She and my Dad (Charles Melville) were married 10/28/24. He died 3/17/86. Edward Earl never married and he died in 1964. There was another child my aunt, Harriet Marie who died (named after Harriet Kurtz) after having only 1 child Esther. She married William Huck who lived in Ky.They had 3 children, William, Paul and Susan.and then moved to Florida. The only thing I know about my grandmother Rosa Reidy was that her parents were born in Germany. I had one Sister Rosemary Lee Koons who died suddenly in 1943 of menigitis when she was 17. She was born in Nov.1925 and died on Dec.10, 1943. I have 4 children who would be Thomas's great grandchildren and 6 grandchildren who would be his great, great grandchild. I knew John Flethcher Koons his brother also lived in Cincinnati and they both worked for the railroad, John Jr owned Burger Brewry and I was connected or owned the Automobile Club in Cincinnati. I really didn't know that Ephraim had other children until I started this a week ago. Carl was a carriage painter and Ephraim was a merchant tailor. I thought the carriage painter bit was sort of neat. I heard my father mention a Dwight Koons but I don't know where he fits in.other than that he died in Ky. I assume Harriet Kurtz was married before as her father's name was Ingersol. Who knew another Ilo would pop up. I think it was a country name. A friend of mine who lived for a time in Van Wert said there were more Ilo's as proper name there. Thanks for replying so soon. I had tried to call a S.Koons in Dayton but there was no answer so I do't know if that was you or not. Thomas Melville and Rosa Koons are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Cincinnati. Charles and Edward etc are buried in Spring Grove cemetery in Cincinnati. Helen Kay Koons Rossell

Concerns about DNA testing for Genealogy

Our similar sounding surnames (Coon, Koones, Koons, Koontz, Coonts, etc.) have been mispelled so many times through the years by well-meaning recorders that it's difficult if not impossible to know by surname spelling who a person is. My GGGGrandfather's name was spelled Cone, Coon, Koontz, in the same county in just a twenty year span.

Here's some new information about DNA testing that may help some people:

Regarding genealogical DNA testing, here's a little more information to help calm fears about insurance companies using DNA information against us:

May 21, 2008

"President George W. Bush signed into law today the the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA - the first and only federal legislation that will provide protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in health care," said Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). "Americans can finally take advantage of the tremendous potential of genetic research without the fear that their own genetic information will be used against them."

Just a few weeks ago, GINA received overwhelming support in both the Senate, with a unanimous vote of approval, and the House of Representatives, where the legislation was passed by a landslide vote of 414-1.

The health insurance protections offered by GINA are expected to roll out 12 months after the bill is signed, whereas the employment protections will be fully realized in 18 months.

Specifically, the legislation protects against genetic discrimination by health insurers or employers by:
Prohibiting group health plans and issuers offering coverage on the group or individual market from basing eligibility determinations or adjusting premiums or contributions on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting issuers of Medigap policies from adjusting pricing or conditioning eligibility on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers may not request, require or purchase genetic information, and may not disclose genetic information. Similar provisions apply to employment agencies and labor organizations."

Everyone of us loses millions of skin cells every day, sheds hair (or get it cut), clip our nails, lick envelopes, and otherwise leave our DNA all over the landscape. We've been doing it all of our lives. If insurance companies wanted your DNA, they would have had it long ago.

Further, your name does not need to be associated with the test results in any way, if that's the way you want it done. You can collect the sample and then use only the surname to identify the sample. (FTDNA would like to keep the surname associated with the sample for research, but other information such as first and middle name, etc., can be left blank.)

The Coon/Coons/Coombs/Koontz, etc., etc., DNA research group is at FamilyTreeDNA.com There are 59 members and 30 have found a connection with another member. www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon
