My great-great grandmother was Fedora (Dorothy) Stephanova Korenchuk (b. 1881), and she married Nicholai (Nick) Kirilovich Rovenko in Ukraine in 1900. They immigrated to the North Dakota, USA in 1903 as a result of persecutions against Christians by the Russian Orthodox Church. They traveled from Hamburg to Halifax via the ship Assyria, and took trains to North Dakota. Dorothy's family did not come with them, but Nick's parents (Kirilo and Cycletta Rovenko) and one of his brothers (Max) did. As a result, I don't know too much about Dorothy's family, and what little I do know came from the Rovenko Family Cookbook, which is fairly limited in informational data.

What I do know is that Dorothy's parents were Stephan Yakimovich Korenchuk and Alexandra Tarasovna Shkolnya. Stephan's father was Yakima Korenchuk (which someone probably derived by looking at Stephan's name). I would appreciate any help in finding additional information about these people.

Read your message on Kornechuk's. My wife's father was
from the Ukraine and his original name was spelled
Korneichuk and when he came to America it was changed
to Kornchuk. My wife's fathers name was Paul Kornchuk.
Nearest village was Rodoshoka and nearest big city was
Grodno. This may not be the correct spelling. Paul had
five brothers and one sister. He settled in the Chicago
area and then moved to Connecticut and then to California
in the 40's. I have been unable to locate the village
or town listed on any map so I think the spelling is way off
from what information we have. We of course would like
to trace down his brothers in Russia but have had very
little luck in finding any information. Paul settled near Skokie
Illinois when he was in the Chicago area. We may not have
any connection other than the Korneichuk name.

There were some relatives that came over around the same time, but when immigration spelled their names they changed the 'e' to an 'a'.

Our Paul Korneichuk came to America in 1910 or 1912.
His brothers names were Cacian,George, Nicon, Pancrati,Phiojil, Sergei. Spelling may not be all correct.
Have very little records on him and cannot find any
records on Ellis Island Records. He lived near Grodno in
the village of Radishoka, or Radushoka and it was near
the Poland boarder.

Please also note change of e-mail address

What little I have

My mother, Zenovia (about 1-1/2 years old) with her mother (Maria Stolorova -- aka "Carpenter") and her about-6-year-old sister, Sonya, came over on the ship, The Czar in 1914 to meet "Grampa" Sasha who had come here a couple of times over the years. My mom still has her immigration papers (but we haven't been able to put our hands on them as yet). My cousin, son of Sonya does have Sonya's papers which I am obviously anxious to see, but I don't know if ANYBODY has either of the folk's papers. Gramma's (Maria Stolorova)'s mother was an albino and died before Gramma was 9 years old. Her father died shortly after her and she ended up as the family breadwinner at the ripe old age of 9 years of age working in a china factory putting teacup handles on teacups. Her younger sister (about 8 years old) "stayed at home" to take care of the 2 little brothers. Her family set up the marriage to Sasha when she was still young (though I don't have that age at my fingertips). All I really know about Sasha is that he was a smallish man with several very large brothers. (All of Grampa's younger pictures look like Czar Nicholos) and although his father gave him land, he either sold it to or gave it to his brothers to come to the US to set up something BESIDES farming. Right now, that is about all I know, however, Mom has been rummaging through a lot of "old stuff" and could (hopefully) come up with something anytime now.

If you don't mind, I would like to "tuck" your grandparents into our tree with the hope that we will soon find a link somewhere. I will keep in touch as I hear from cousins and aunts and the like

Stephanie: Have you tried to use People Finder on the Internet? Using Netscape, I find several listed. There are other search engines you could try if you have not already done so. This comes from an uncle of Candy Wood, also interested in ancestry but with a spelling heretofore understood as limited to Korneychuk. The will of Grigory Maximovitch Korneychuk, my grandfather on my mother Vera's side, shows that he was born in the village of Kosiakovka, about 60 to 70 miles south of Kiev. Do you have any comparable information on the origin of the clan with a spelling of Kornechuk?

OH -- WOW -- (please forgive the shouting) but I think we're onto something here!!! My grandfather, Sasha Kornechuk started coming over here [leaving a small family at home near Kiev] around 1910, looking for a "good place to settle" and eventually ended up near Lansing, MI after looking at both New York and Chicago. I KNOW that he had many brothers and that he was "the runt of the litter." His father was a land barron of some sort and Grampa and his brothers were all given large tracts of land to farm but Grampa wasn't good with animals or farming and became a blacksmith engineer. Here in Michigan he worked for an automobile company until the Depression when his accent lost his job for him. I can only imagine that a brother or two, maybe a cousin or two, eventually came over too but so far YOU, my fair lady, are my only clue. My Grandmother was Maria Stolrova (think that is = to "carpenter" had two brothers. Mom thinks that at least one of her brothers came over and a few of her cousins came much later.

This is probably pretty gangly for a bullitin board but I am just so excited. I sure hope you have encouraged a few others out of the woodwork. Please feel free to contact me. After I simmer down a bit, I will think of other things and will contact you! Thanks for your response!!!!

Fondest regards!!
Cousin Steph

Do you know your great grandfather's name? And do you have Sasha's immigration papers? I think we need more information to see if our two families are linked? It is exciting to have met you on a message board. My grandmother came over in 1909.

I made a mistake when I said that Vera's father was Cornelius. It is actually Grigory. Could you tell me what religion your Kornechuks were. That would be a very important clue.

More on the Korneychuks

One of the signers of the will belonging to Grigory Korneychuk was a Stephan Korneychuk. And I am waiting for more SS applications to come back on all the Korneychuks or Kornechuk's that I could find. Maybe I will have more information later. Could you tell me what religion your Kornechuks were? My guess is that those Korneychuks who were born near Kiev are related.

I'm not sure if the name I have is part of your family. on my great grandfather's social security application he has a Katie Kornuchux listed as his mother and his father as Mike Kotchman but I know his name was kotchmanuk. My Aunt told me my grandfather was born near kiev. The town listed on his application is skoworodka Russia. Also when I looked at the 1920 census in Westmoreland County Pa there is a peter Kornechux and a mike kornechux listed as my grandfather's boarders. They are listed as being born in Bolinski, Russia. Let me know if some of this is familiar.
kathy
