Hi Peter. We're second cousins - my grandfather was Wm Harold, in between Herb and Arnie. My mother was Vera Kortum, your dad will probably remember her. The doctor in Cooktown was the Qld state medical officer - there is much about him in the archives but he doesn't appear to be related. There were three Wendel brothers from Fehmarn however they are Harold's in-laws.
I have photos of Matthias, Rosina and family, his mother Christina (Kruse) and sister Anna. Also transcripts of Herb's letters home from the Boer War etc. If you contact me by email on garyrhix@gmail.com then I can send them to you.
regards Gary Hicks

Hi. If you are descended from Matthias Kortum who came from Fehmarn Island, Holstein to Victoria in 1859 then I can help you. This Matthias was a stonemason building the Melbourne-Sandhurst railway before taking up land at Elphinstone and then Elmore. He married Rosina Smith at Castlemaine in 1867. He died in 1921 and is buried at Elmore. If you have a Herbert or Arnold in your ancestry then it's probably the right one.

There was a Fred (Fritz Frederick Kortum) Kortum who came to the US in 1881 with his 7 brothers and sisters, settling in Manning, Iowa. He married a "Dora unknown". I thought they had moved to Michigan, though, not Montana. I think he had three children: Mary, Margaret, and Fred.

Children of George Jacob Kortum and Johanna Rasmus (Rehr)

In 1988 my father received this information from a woman in Germany, who researched the Lutheran Church records in Landkirchen and in the Burg (town) on the Island of Fehmarn, for him.

George Jacob Kortum, Schiffer in Lemkenhaffen
B. Lemkenhaffen March 4, 1846

Married

In Landkirchen Dec 12, 1867 To:

Johanna Maria Rasmus (Rehr) (I have more about this)
B. Landkirchen February 2, 1845

They came to the United States in 1881.

Their children are in Church Records as follows:

1. Emma Amalie Agnes
B. Landkirchen January 1, 1868
D. Landkirchen March 1, 1869

2. Jacob Friedrich
B. Landkirchen April 1, 1870

3. Ernestine
B. Landkirchen May 9, 1871

4. Carl Jacob Peter
B. Landkirchen October 6, 1872

5. Meta Margaretha
B. Landkirchen November 25, 1874

6. Johanna Amalie Caroline (My Great Grandmother)
B. Burgstaaken May 9, 1876
D. February, 1965 Kalispell, Montana

7. Agnes Dorothea Catharina
B. Burgstaaken June 15, 1877

8. Catharina Doris
B. Burgstaaken September 3, 1878

9. Fritz
B. Burgstaaken August 27, 1880

I have more information on some of these people, but mostly on my great grandmother, and her descendants.

I do not know anything about the following children that Joseph Swallow found listed in the 1900 Federal Census for Iowa:

Rosa Kortum
B. October 1885

Mary Kortum
B. November 1887

It is my personal belief that the 19 year old Fred shown on the census is Fritz. (Possibly his name was Jacob Frederich also?)

Just a thought, but I believe the church records more or less bear this out.

My grandfather, George Kortum, was born in Iowa (I think) right around the turn of the century or right before it. His parents came over from Germany after his mother was dis-owned by her aristocratic family for marrying my great-grandfather. They had one child on the ship which died. I believe there were between 7 and 10 children in all. The youngest, Fred Kortum, died two months ago in Pleasant Hills, CA. My other grandfather's siblings lived in Anaconda, Montana for some time. I'm looking for any information on the family. Thanks!

Woodrow Kortum was my uncle by marriage to his first wife Margie Thompson. He died a couple of years ago in Southern Calif. He and Margie divorced about 1957 and they both later remarried. They had six children together, and I believe he and his second wife had at least one child. What is your connection to him?

To Mike Kortum:

I was wondering if the uncle of your father, Peter Helmut Kortum (umlaut over the u) that moved to the US in the 1800's was my great grandfather, Bernard Henrich Kortum. Bernard had two sons, the youngest was my grandfather, Friedrich Johan Kortum, born in New York in 1888. Please contact me if we are related. I am trying to connect to the Kortum family.

Woodrow Kortum of Manning Iowa is my uncle. His brother, Joseph Clifford, was my grandfather. I, too, am trying to find information on the family. All I know about Woodrow Wilson Kortum is that he was born in 1912 in Manning, Iowa. We have a lot of relatives in Manning which I cannot place. My great grandmother (woodrow's mother), died in Wyoming and was buried in Manning.

Joseph Kortum

Woodrow Wilson Kortum, born in Manning, Iowa, was the second youngest of my grandfather's family. My grandfather, Joseph Clifford Kortum, was the eldest. All the kids were born in Manning Iowa. My great grandmother, Daisy Mae Nickum-Kortum, (Woodrow's mother) died in Billings, Wyoming and her body was shipped back to Manning for burial.

Woodrow's father was Jacob Fredridk Kortum, born in 1886. Not sure when he died. But I know that a Jacob Kortum, b. 4/4/1846, d. 7/8/1919 is also buried in Manning Iowa.

Joseph Kortum Swallow
