Classification: Query
Surnames: Kossuth, Kosuth, Kosut, Kosuta, Koshut, Kochant, Kossert...
I have asked Rootsweb to start a Kossuth surname message board. My intention was to have a forum for anyone researching this surname in any of its spelling variants. If anyone has knowledge of the genealogy of the famous Lajos Kossuth, I encourage you to post, since it might help those who believe they might be related to him. (I don't believe that I am.)
I am researching the Kossuth family from Svetlice (formerly called Világ or Vylagy), which is in northeastern Slovakia. The surname was spelled Kossuth in the mid-1800s, but has also been spelled Kosuth, Kosut, Kosuta, etc. The family was Greek Catholic and Rusyn.
In America, I know that my relatives have immigrated to the Pittsburgh, PA, Berwick, PA and Binghamton, NY areas, and the surname has taken on the spelling variants Koshut, Kochant, and Kossert.
My current brick wall is finding out where my great-grandfather Feodor Kosut is buried. We believe it to be somewhere in PA farther east than Pittsburgh, possibly in St. Marys in Elk County.
I would like to hear from anyone with knowledge of this family.
