In my family it is pronounced "cuff" (it's my maiden name), and family lore claimed it was a Dutch name. I have come across the "cuff" spelling variation in some old church records.

It is pronounced Coe...and from what I am gathering from my own family members, Kough I believe is Scottish. I don't think the Kough's were from Ireland.

The William I have is born 1809 or 1810. He is shown on the 1850 census with a wife Sarah and son Edward and William. (Edward is the line we are from). The family lived in BlackLick Co. Pennsylvania. Edward and one other Kough moved to Kansas, it seems they lost contact with the PA. folks. I have a death certificate of Edward showing his dad was a Kough and Mom was a Milligan.

Alexander was married twice. A marriage license was issued to Alexanger Kough age 60 and Susan Truby age 31 on April 4, 1892. Alexander listed George and Phoebe Kough as his parents. Susan's parents were J. Henry and Sarah Anaback??? or at least that's what it looks like. Their address was DuBois, PA. Alexander's occupation was a miller. The license shows that Alexander's former wife died on January 24, 1892, but it doesn't give her name. Susan's former husband died on November 9, 1891.

On the 1860 census there is a John W. Kough, age 9, the son of John Margaret Kough. Would your John Wesley be the grandson of Samuel Kough? I'm interested in learning what the relationship is between Samuel Kough, b. 1799, and George Kough, b. abt 1795. Samuel married Sarah Chambers and George married Sarah's sister, Phoebe Chambers.

Re: KOUGH BIBLE

After reading Sidney's reply I looked through my files, and did indeed find John J. Rosensteel. My records show Rosanna Elizabeth “Lizzie” Kough (16 July 1832 – 23 March 1907) was the daughter of Joseph Kough and Mary (Miller) Kough. Elizabeth married John J. Rosensteel on 22 February 1878. Mr. Rosensteel had a merchantile business in Shirleysburg, PA. Their children were J. Albert, Harry, John, and a daughter. This information is in a Kough Family manuscript that I got from The Clearfield County Historical Society and doesn’t cite sources.

Joseph Kough, age 50, is listed in the PA 1860 census in Huntingdon Co., Shirley Twp.with his wife, Mary, age 45, and the following children: Andrew, 18; Margaret, 16; Sarah, 13; Nancy, 11; Elizabeth, 8; Charlotte, age 6.

Some of Joseph’s descendants moved to Bourbon Co., Kansas in the 1870’s.

As Sidney mentioned Joseph Kough was the son of the German immigrants George and Margaret Kough. The other sons were George, Samuel, David, Jacob, and Benjamin. George Kough was married to Phoebe Chambers, who was a sister of Sarah Chambers the wife of Samuel Kough. I'm tracing the descendants of Washington Kough, the son of George and Phoebe.

George and Phoebe KOUGH are new discoveries for me. I am trying to verify that they had a son named ALEXANDER born about 1826. He would be my GG Grandfather. Would anyone have a list of their children? Just as a side-note, it appears that it was Alexander's children that changed the spelling to COOK.

I haven't found the Rosensteel name in connection with this family, but there were numerous Kough families in early Pennsylvania. When you find some first names, perhaps I can help.
Last October I got a copy of a Marriage License from the Clearfield County Courthouse in PA for the marriage of Alexander KOUGH on April 4, 1892 to Susan Truby. His age was 60 and she was 31. His former wife died January 24, 1892. The license does name his parents, George and Phoebe KOUGH. Washington Kough (1832-1913) was another of their sons. I believe John S. and Graham Kough were also their sons.

I have a Kough Bible, purchased from an online dealer, that lists the initials and birth dates for the Edmond Kough family. I believe Edmond may have been a brother to Washington (1832-1913) and Alexander Kough, sons of George Kough and Phoebe Chambers. I would like to exchange information with anyone with an interest in these families.

The family record lists Edmond born 19 December 1835, M. A. born 27 May 1836, J. W. born 8 Sept 1856, B. J. born 9 September 1858, J. (or I) B. born 19 October 1860, M. E. born 29 April 1863, S. A. born 30 October 1865, M. A. born 1867.

I believe this Bible belonged to this family listed on the 1870 CENSUS, CLEARFIELD CO., Beccaria Twp., : Edmund B. Kough, age 34, Jacob W. 14, Barbara 11, Oretta B. 10, Mary E. 7, Sarah A. 5, Martha A. 3 and a housekeeper, Harriett Smith 25 and her two sons, Andrew W. 8 and David 5.

Records in the Coalport, PA Library of the Crossroads Cemetery, Beccaria Township lists Mary Kough, wife of E. B., died 28 September 1869.

Also recorded in the Bible - " E. B. Kough married Caroline Grumian in Clay Twp. 2 March 1876. Witness J. Wagoner, Eli E. Shore, J.P."

The 1880 CENSUS, HUNTINGDON CO., Clay Twp., E.D. 203, page 349A lists E. B. Kough 45; wife Carrie Kough 38; stepsons, David Griman 14 and Wesley Griman 13; his daughter, Alice 11; their daughter, Ella 1 and son William 3 months.

I am searching for information regarding my great grandmother Sarah Kough Slagle. She was married to John Slagle who was from Mifflin County. I can locate John in the 1870 Census--he was a child of 7 at that time. Nothing comes up for Sarah Kough. In the 1880 census John is listed in Brady, Huntingdon, PA as being 17 and living with a family by the last name of Clayton. I guess it is safe to assume that he met Sarah at some point after 1880.....but where did Sarah come from? I have done many searches on her, but have not had any luck......if anyone has any info on Sarah Kough that you could pass along, it would be greatly appreciated. My mother said that my grandfather, Harry Slagle had half siblings---Charles Foster, Cora Naugle (married name) and Gertrude Isenberg. In the 1930 census Charles (43) appears to be 5 years older than my grandfather (38).

Unfortunately their is no "correct" way to pronounce the ough sound in english. I pronounce my name to rhyme with coe. I know of other cough's that pronounce it kofe (a long O sound) It is my understanding that the name is of Irish origin and was originally spelled cuffe . It is entirely possible that Kough and Cough are related but I do not have any personal knowledge of any Kough's. Sorry . Hope this helps . Clay
