Carl, my great grandfather in Louisville, Kentucky is named Nicholas Miller Kountz who had a brother named William Kountz who lived in Charlestown, Tennessee. I have no record of William's wife's name. Is James your father? Do you know of any other children that may have belonged to William and Anna Kountz?

Ida Kountz married to Robert McCrea

I'm looking for information on Ida Kountz(s). She is shown on an Indian Census (listed as white) married to Robert McCrea (1/2 Indian). His year of birth is 1870. They are listed with the Colville Agency. I'm assuming that she is the mother of Rachel McCrea (b: 1904)

Anyone with information can contact me directly: findfamily2008@aol.com

Thank you,
Deedee

I meant to say Y-DNA is the DNA that is passed from father to son. In order to do this testing you have to be male and carry a KOONTZ variation to test for the COON/KOONTZ surname.
For the month of September there is a discount rate if you go through a group at Family Tree DNA.

Descendants of Henry KOONTZ married to Elizabeth BOWYER

I am looking for male descendants of Henry KOONTZ married to Elizabeth BOWYER who carry a KOONTZ variation and come down this direct line for Y-DNA testing. KOUNTS and KOUNTZ have been used for this family.
I have noticed that

1. William KOONTZ married to Catherine LOWE
2. Charles KOONTZ m. Rebecca TIGERT
3. Andrew KOONTZ m. Lydia MILLER
4. Samuel KOONTZ m. Elizabeth TIGERT
5. John KOONTZ m. Margaret LILLY

are said to come from this union. My ancestor is Alexander KOONTZ married to Susan MARTIN. I do not think that my Alexander is from this union but a good way to tell is if someone from this group could do Y-DNA testing. It would include your family or exclude them from being kin. I also have wondered if there is a will for Henry Koontz m. to Elizabeth BOWYER that would name the children for this family. I would love to hear from descendants from this group and to see if anyone would be willing to do Y-DNA testing. Y-DNA testing is the testing that is passed from father to son and in order to do this testing you would have to carry the Koontz surname or a variation of it. You can see information for this at http://www.familytreedna.com/pub/Coon Thanks for any help.
Re: Henry Kountz m Elizabeth Bowyer -who's his father?

I have been looking at the two Henry KOONTZ variations in the West Virginia location for 1810. There is a Henry KOUNTS in Kanawha Co., VA(WV), and a Henry KOUNTZ in Monroe County, VA(WV). I also have a GGG-Grandfather who was Alexander KOONTZ married to Susan MARTIN. I don't believe that my Alexander is from Henry KOONTZ married to Elizabeth BOWYER. Some in our family have believed this. There is a good way to tell what family that you do belong to by doing Y-DNA testing. We have had a descendant of our Alexander KOONTZ do the Y-DNA testing. The advantage to this is that it tells your who you do belong with and who you do not belong with. If you sign up for the testing then you are sent a kit and all you have to do is swab the inside of your Cheek. They have you do this three times. And then you send it to Family Tree DNA to have it tested. The link for the KOONTZ group is through the COON surname. If you go to http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon you can see that there is a sale for the month of Sept. I believe that the sale will go off by the end of the month. Our person tested is in Group 11 and has Alexander KOONTZ b. about 1795 as the person listed. Just scroll down for the results page and you will see that there are quite a few KOONTZ variations tested. If you go with the group it is less expensive and with the sale this month it makes it a reasonable price. I would very much like to discuss this family with you. I am descended through Alexander and Susan MARTIN KOONTZ's son Andrew Brown KOONTZ. If you go to http://rootsweb.ancestry.com and enter Henry KOONTZ married to Elizabeth BOWYER, you will see quite a few people that claim to be their descendants. Thanks
Hello. I am searching for anyone descended from this man. While I do not have dates on him, his wife, Davel COMBS, was born ca 1877. She was a sister to my Ggrandmother Mary ("Minnie") COMBS HUDSON who was born 1865 (of the Lexington, KY, COMBSes) in Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri.

A.F. KOUNTZE and his wife, Davel COMBS, were living in New York City, NY as of 1911. And,
I do not even know that they had children. But if they did, I'd like to communicate with their descendants. (BTW, I have lots of COMBS information to share with them.)

Thanks,

Leslie C.

Hi Pat,

I've not seen the -man tacked on to the Kountz surname in any of my research. However, I can't say I'd be surprised by anything anymore. You might try the many different variations of kountz and leave the "man" part in tact. I.e. kunsman, kunzman, kunzeman, koonsman, kuhnsman, etc. I've even seen the name kunzleman. The problem with the name Kountz is that in the 18th and 19th century people spelled things phonetically and, lucky us, there are umpteen differernt ways to phonetically spell Kountz. I've also found that not all of us pronounce it the same way, thus leading to variations on the possible phonetic spellings. e.g. My immediate family pronounce the name with the same vowel sound as in "book", my second cousin pronounces it like "counts" (which is another spelling variation I've seen), still others say coons as in "racoon".

I know this doesn't answer your question, but hopefully will give you some other ideas to keep in mind in your research.

Good luck,

Ken

Kountz Packet Lines, William J. KOUNTZ

Hi Ken,

It has been several years since we corresponded, but I think you'll remember our conversations about Kountz Line Packets and William J. Kountz. I have only a litle bit to update for you, but who knows, maybe it will trigger something.

To refresh your memory, my Capt. David C. HANEY ran steamboats for Kountz Line Packets (and married Sarah C. Kountz or Koonse from Columbiana County, Ohio). I recently received some newspaper articles by mail from Sioux City, Iowa describing the sinking of the "Peninah" steamboat, captained by Haney and owned by William J. Kountz. Seems that Kountz really tried to raise the "Peninah", but after a day or two it was obvious that the boat wasn't going to make it. (also recall that Wm. J. Kountz's wife was named Peninah)

I found a David Haney mentioned here, but it is more likely a father or uncle to my David Haney, based on the years: "There was also an ancient ferry established from a point a short distance below the railroad viaduct, Allegheny, to the mouth of Hand Street (now Ninth), Pittsburg. It was carried on by Mr. Yerkins, under the management of David Haney, an old and experienced water-man, and continued in operation until about the year 1830, when it was abandoned. In 1834 Mr. George A. Kurtz established a wire-rope ferry from the mouth of Hancock Street (now Eighth Street), Pittsburg, to a point about midway between Sandusky and Anderson Streets, Allegheny. The amount of travel not justifying its continuance, it was abandoned the following year."

My Capt. David Haney was said to have "born and bred a river man." It would make sense that his father might have run a ferry in old Pittsburgh.

Do you know the name of William J. Kountz's brother, who was a partner in the Packet Line? Have you made any progress to establish a link with this William J. Kountz and your family?

Again, I'd be happy to share any info I have if you are interested.

Laura

Kountz/Counts Family DNA Project and related Surnames

We currently have a Koontz/Counts Family DNA Project underway and are looking for anyone who may be interested in participating with this study. We already have the minimum required participants. I will be coordinating this effort. Please contact me if you have an interest in pursuing this. The DNA test itself is a very simple procedure consisting of a swabbing of cheek cells from any Male Counts/Koontz. The Male would have to carry the Counts/Koontz Surname. There are 2 different DNA tests that are available, a 12-marker and a 25-marker. I believe the current price is $99 and $169 respectively.

I also have letters and cards from Leona and Mary that were sent to my great grandfather William M. Davis, whose mother was Mary Ann Kounts, who married George C. Davis. Mary Ann was Joseph's sister. Mary Guss was Joseph's second wife. Joseph's son Samuel was by his first wife. Michael Kounts was the son of Adam Kounts(Kuns, Kunse), and this is where I have run into a brick wall. I have have newspaper clippings of the obituaries of Joseph and Samuel.
Raymond L Kountz of Lake County Indiana killed in South Pacific

Raymond L. Kountz of Lake County Indiana was killed February 20, 1945, while serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life and especially locate any family members still living so we can send them the free photograhs of his grave site and the beautiful memorial in the Philippines.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Zenas5@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

Thanks for the reply. First, maybe the email address was not quite visible and perhaps part of it was wrong, only a guess. Perhaps even the Yahoo service was down for a few moments. I have had this account since about 1995 and it is my primary email address. I use Yahoo because I can use it world wide and it is more secure than Outlook or MSN Hotmail. Here it is again:

zenas5@yahoo.com

Okay, now down to business, I just checked the American Battle Monument Commission website and there are only two Kountz that are honored in foreign cemeteries that are part of their structure. One is John W from Kentucky and the other is listed as Raymond L from Indiana. These records usually refelct the location in which the men enlisted in the military and not neccessarily their home. I would bet we are speaking of the same person.

Let's see if we can match the service number. You can perhaps find that at a website from your state. Do you know where that info can be found? So the information we have is that he joined from Lake County near Chicago. Keep in mind many of these men joined in a location where they were attending college or visiting relatives.

I will continue from here looking for answers. If you have info regarding your Raymond L please send it and I may get an addition clue from that. Also an obituary may have all the answers. We do not have an obituary here. Since the date of death is the same, I think that's to coincidental but I want to insure that from separate sources.

Dave

My husband had a great-uncle named Raymond L. Kountz who was killed on Luzon on Feb.20, 1945 and buried in the Phillipines, but he was born in Colorado in 1906. Could his be the grave you found?

I attempted to e-mail you, but got the message that you don't have an account with YAHOO.

Henry Kountz m Elizabeth Bowyer -who's his father?

I have been trying to find the parents of Henry Counts/Countz/Koontz (b 1765 - d 1800 in Monroe Co, (W)VA). Henry married Elizabeth Bowyer and had 10 children (we follow his son Alexander to Allen Co, OH). In looking at the 1810 and 1820 Monroe Co, VA census images the only 'Counts' looking surnames I can find are - Henry and George. I'm pretty confident the Henry Kountz in 1810 is my Henry as the ages of the children match. The 1810 census also has George Kountz (same page in the census) with 2 males <10, 1 male & 1 female 15-25 and 2 males >45.

Does anyone know anything about this George Kountz? Could he possible be Henry's father?

In 1820, there is a Henry Countz, George Countz, Sr and George Countz.
