Though this letter may come as a surprise to you, please kindly take the time to read it carefully as it deals with a serious matter concerning a potential relative of yours.
This is by no means a prank or joke.
I am a French psychiatrist specialized in criminology and I am currently writing a book on Eugen Weidmann, the man who assassinated in July 1937 a young American dancer named Jean de Koven.

I have already found a few specific pieces of information thanks to Paris police archives that I have been authorized to examine :

Born in Boston, on the 29th of march 1913, this young woman, lived in France for a few days with her aunt Ida Sackheim, during the famous world fair known as the ."Exposition Universelle."in july 1937. Her aunt was her mother, Fannie Sackheim’s sister. Ida Sackheim worked as a fashion illustrator in New York and lived at 439 West End avenue NY.
Her office was located at 63 West 38 street NY, Phone Wisconsin 7-3266.

Jean de Koven had a brother named Henry de Koven born in 1908 who was 29 at the time and who lived with his parents (Abraham de Koven and Fannie Sackheim and his sister in New York at 10 Ocean Park Way in Brooklyn . He was apparently the Director of Radiocoin company located at 247 Park avenue,NY (I'm not sure of this last information).

I would like to get in touch with her descendants to ask them a few questions for my book. I am especially interested in finding out more about this young lady's family.
Unaware of whether or not Henry de Koven had any descendants , I have taken the liberty of contacting you
Feel free to contact me by email at catherine.carreorengo@wanadoo.fr.

Thanking you in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide me.

With my best wishes and deepest gratitude,

Dr. Catherine CARRE-ORENGO
Vera June Koven is my mother, so that makes you my aunty! You must have met me along with my siblings before we left England. We were supposed to go to Melbourne but had to disembark at Fremantle which is the port at Perth. I believe that was due to my medical situation at the time. We never made it to Melbourne. You can email me at blundec@bigpond.net.au

Simon and Esther were Uncle and Aunt to my mother, Rita Wallensky. When my father (William) went to war in 1939, they took her and my brother in. I met Great Aunt Esther once when my brother got maried in 1967 but I was only 11 then. I do have pictures of them. The original writer, David is my cousin. His Dad and my Mom were siblings. Looks like we are all related.

Lori,

Most likely this is a different branch of the Koven family than mine. My grandfather Jacob Morris Koven was born in Russia in 1881. However, one of his brothers, Julius Lewis Koven, was born in Russia in 1865 and his son, Bernard W. Koven, was born in Chicago in 1898.

If you would like to see my tree, feel free to email me (gkoven-at-yahoo-dot-com). Good luck!

Dear Lori,

The names in your post definitely look familiar to me from when I was doing my search. I was lucky enough to find my "Kowensky" family in British Columbia, and even got to meet them. An individual named Roger Fleishman on ancestry.com was experienced and an enormous help. He was also searching for Koven relatives. I'm wondering if you could be related to him. I will need to go through my piles of notes and see if I kept his email address. I am assuming you have already contacted Gary Koven who is also on this post. My email address is donna@aflairforwriting.com if you want to correspond directly.

My great grandfather, Kovensky, settled in Manitoba, where he is buried in Winnipeg at the Hebrew Sik (sp?)cemetary. All his sons changed their surnames to DeKoven or De Koven, and my grandfather shortened his to Koven. My cousin (dad's first cousin in Toronto) believes Koven comes from the Kovno ghetto? Other members of the family think Kovensky may have origionally been De Koven before they migrated to Russia.

Re: Koven Family

My family had a Koven who settled in British Columbia, originally from Lithuania. I'm trying to find relatives, but have little to go by. Here's what I've come up with:

I am searching for relatives of my ancestors, Moses Kovensky and Philip Robert Koven. Philip was my grandfather and Moses (or Morris) was my great-grandfather. Moses never came to this country. According to my research, Philip arrived in 1906 from Lithuania via Southampton, England at age 21. He married my grandmother, Sadie somewhere after that. In 1920, my mother, Lillian Koven was born, followed by Estelle, Alan, and Robert.
While Sadie was pregnant with Robert, Philip – a traveling cotton salesman, was killed. I have the date as November 18, 1924. I was told the accident occurred in New Hampshire during bad weather. Sadly, he skidded on icy roads, and the car jackknifed into a river, where he drowned.

Philip had at least one brother and a sister. A brother (name unknown, possibly Louis) settled in Alberta, Canada, arriving sometime after Philip. He and his family visited my mother’s family during the 1920’s, probably the later 20’s, while she was in high school. He had 2 daughters, Olive and Nora. If either one married, there could be descendants that are part of my family. There was also an uncle (name unknown) who was a fur trapper and had settled in British Columbia. I have researched Koven records containing info from Winnepeg, Manitoba and Quebec, but am uncertain if they were relatives.

I believe that my ancestors came over from Vilna, Lithuania. We are all of Jewish descent. I am 52 and was born in 1955. My brother is 2 years older. If there is a possibility that we are related, or if you know of any of my relatives, please contact me. My e-mail is donna@aflairforwriting.com.

Hey Donna,

I was born in New York City in 1953. I'm 54 years old.

My cousin Ken De Koven (son of Abraham) and I (son of Jacob Morris) are the oldest in the family. My brother in Israel is fluent in Hebrew and should be able to translate the writing on the back of your photo.

I have a few photos of my grandfather, my grandmother, my great-grandfather and my great-grandmother. On my father's birth certificate, my grandfather's occupation is listed as "salesman".

I'd like you to take a look at my family tree as well.

We should probably go off line to exchange this information, but when I tried to get your email address the way I used to by clicking on your screen name, I found that this site has changed and evidently they want me to pay before I can view your email address. I won't do that, so please email me...

Gary (gkoven-at-yahoo-dot-com)

Hi Gary,
Where are you from? How old are you? We're probably around the same age range. My grandfather's parents stayed in Lithuania and wrote to my grandmother until the time of the Holocaust. Then communication stopped. If any descendants survived, there is the possibility of a relation. My great-grandfather was Moses, although one relative recalled it as Morris. If he had siblings whose children made it over here, that would be the link. Unfortunately, that's where the trail ends on this side. There's no one alive to get more info. Some other pertinent info I have is that my grandfather, Philip, had a college degree - pretty unusual in those days. He was a cotton salesman. I have a photo in good condition of his father, Moses, and his wife and 2 adult children. There's Hebrew writing on the back. Is there anyone elderly who is alive in your family to run this by? Thanks. Donna

Entirely possible ... I've filled out my Koven tree quite a bit in the past 4 years.

My father was Mark Seymour Koven born in Boston, 1923-2006.

My grandfather was Jacob Morris Koven born in Lithuania, settled in Boston, 1868-1933.

My great-uncle was Abraham Koven born in Lithuania, settled in New York, 1881-1947. His son Henry De Koven, 1908-1993.

Another great-uncle was Julius Louis Koven born in Lithuania, settled in Chicago, 1855-1935. His son Bernard was born in Chicago, 1898-1987. I reported on "Julius Lewis" back in 2003 in this forum and asserted that "Lewis" may have been the true family name but I have now ascertained that Julius simply dropped the surname.

My brother, who lives in Israel, asserts that Nissan Koven is the name of my great-grandfather, the father of Julius Lewis, Jacob Morris, and Abraham. My mother says there may have been more brothers in Lithuania, likely dispersed to avoid conscription by the Cossacks.

I wonder if there is any distant relation to my grandfather, Philip Koven (Kovensky), who emigrated from Lithuania at the turn of the century, settling in Boston, MA. He had relatives who settled in Canada and one was a fur trapper, not sure where. I have lots more info if you think there's a connection. Philip had a brother who had two daughters, Olive and Nora. That's where the trail ends.

Decovin in Brunswick, Maine

Family tradition says my John Decovin (b. 1808, d. 1882) was a Dutch bondboy or ship carpenter who jumped ship somewhere in Maine. His daughter's death certificate states he was born in Bethel, Maine (but who knows if her son really knew). Have been unable to find any ancestors, John just suddenly shows up in the 1870 Brunswick, Maine census. He married Mary Jane Stevens (b. 1806, d.1881). Their children:
Samuel, b. 1839, d. 1839.
John H., b. 1841, m. Hattie Frances Holbrook?
m2? Marietta (Maloon) Tarr.
Farnham, b. 1842.
Joseph S., b. 1844, d. 1928, m. Maria C. Dustin.
Georgie Ann, b. 1845, d. 1929, m. William Curtis Berry.

The Decovin name, spelled this way, is very rare so suspect it may be a variation of DeKoven? especially since family tradition seems to match some of what I've seen on this message board. Any ideas would be appreciated. Would like to hear from any descendents, also.

My family includes Kovens, De Kovens, and Kovensky.

To the best of my knowledge, Kovensky (Yaakov and Sarah Goldberg) and respective siblings left "Russia", or Ukraine, probably Nicolayev on the Black Sea near Odessa, arriving in Western Canada (Winnipeg, Manitoba) around 1902. Their children later included my father, Maurice, as well as Samuel, Dora, Sylvia, Percy (Peretz), and Sadie.

Kovensky was shortened to Koven shortly afterward, and several years later mysteriously became De Koven. De Kovens from the United States passing through Canada have contacted us, and have the same first names inherited from ancestors.

A tenuous theory: De Koven appears to be a bona fide Dutch name. In the 17th century, Amsterdam was the financial centre of the world, and Dutch traders travelled down the Volga and into Russia. Russifying De Koven would have entailed dropping the "De" and adding an "sky" to Koven, to get Kovensky. It could then have morphed back to De Koven in Canada or the U. S. My father did not subscribe to this theory, however.

Isador Kovensky, born about 1865, had six children who all settled in Baltimore, the last one arriving about 1914.

Do you know of this family? A good trail exists once they arrived, but the only history I have is copies of Social Security applications which they ontained in their 40's.
Pretty close indeed, amazing coincidences on the first names of Bernard and Lillian, but definitely no cigar, as I confirmed with my father tonight. My father Mark has never heard of your father Arthur, either. Too bad ... I have very few cousins ...

I don't know where the Koven name came from. As I posted to this forum on two separate threads, it's either descended from Baron von Koven the Hessian, or a slip of the pen of an Ellis Island examiner who mis-wrote "Kovno" when my grandfather answered "What is your name" (which was actually Lewis).

My father's distant cousin, Bernard W. "Budge" Koven and his wife Lillian lived on the south side of Chicago in the 1960's. Budge operated a printing company. I visited them as a teenager and remember a brownstone within walking distance of Lake Shore Drive. After Lillian died, Budge moved to Miami and bought a motel on South Collins avenue, which he operated for several years before he died in the 1970's.

Budge and Lill said they had a son, Stan, who was a television writer in New York City. I found an email address for Stan Koven in New York City and have emailed him to see if he is my cousin.

Another von Koven theory

I am Gary Koven, born in New York City in 1953. My biological family includes only Kovens. My extended family includes Kovens and deKovens.

My father, Mark Seymour Koven, was born in Boston in 1923. My father relates that his parents became family friends with Henry deKoven, who was an actor in Boston. Henry deKoven, now deceased, later extended his career to New York City where his daughter Gloria deKoven Diabo (born approximately 1948) worked for the Rivoli Theater for many years.

My father theorizes that Henry may have been a descendant of the Hessian von Kovens in the time of the Revolutionary War who returned to Moldavia and eventually came to Canada.

According to research materials my father found in the University of Wisconsin Library in the 1960's, Baron von Koven was the commandant of a small privateer vessel that was headed for the Trenton/Monmouth, New Jersey conflict in 1776. However, unlike the doctrinaire accounts of the capture of the sleeping Hessians who had already landed, in this account the Baron's boat was waylaid by American privateers while in a dense fog. With a gun to his head, the Baron was offered two choices: abandon his vessel and his men to the Americans, and accept exile to a large estate in Virginia abandoned by a wealthy British Loyalist family which had recently returned to England, or be shot on the spot.

The Baron surrendered, accepted exile, and took up residence for a generation in Virginia. His children, however, sold the estate and returned to Moldavia in the mid-1800's. Eventually they migrated to the part of Canada previously documented in other messages in this forum by Linda and Dave.

This would seem to be borne out by an Internet reference:

http://www.motherbedford.com/Propaganda01.htm

The final paragraph of the aborementioned website lends credence to this theory but the author of this website blocks copy and paste; therefore you may wish to surf and peruse.

From my understanding, my family name of Koven, or the history, began in Hungary and has been traced to the 1800's. I was born in the USA in 1969. My father "Morton" was born in Canada in 1925, My grandfather "Jack" was born in Hungary in 1899, and my great-grandfather was born in the 1870's and his father also born in Hungary in 1845. My grandfather, Jack, migrated from Europe to Canada in 1919 with his wife Aida (from Hungary). My father, Morton, moved to the United States (from Canada) in 1955, with his current wife Mary. The rest of the generations have been 100% red white and blue. Our family has been able to count, thus far, six generations of Koven's
