Hello there,
my last name is Kowalzik - that's the East Prussian version of this name which has it's roots in Poland and means nothing else but ... Smith! That's why you find so many of them ...
(the main syllable is "Kowal", the "zik" or "czyk" is a diminuitive, i.e. "little Smith" or "Schmidtchen").
Hope this is of some help.

I'm looking for information on Hedwig (AKA: Harriet) Kowalczyk (B:4Aug1920). I believe her parents to be Paul (B:abt1880 Poland) and Ursula (B:abt1884 Poland). They had 3 daughters Irene (B:1916), Hedwig (B:1920), and Virginia (B:1925). This information was pulled from a 1930 census of Chicago. Harriet married Herman Staudenmayer (abt1942).

Any information would be great...

Thanks,
Staudie

The spelling KOWALCZYK is Polish and the name does exist in good numbers in Poland.
Krakow is a nice size city.
www.krakow.pl
www.pilot.pl for locating a town in Poland
The town of ZYWIEC is in Poland and not that far from Slovak Republic's border.

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) website is showing Roman Catholic church records in their library for Zywiec..
You can order those films and gather ancestral information.
The spelling KOVALCIK is a Slovak spelling and pronounced like KOWALCZYK in the "old country".

www.bmi.net/jjaso to familiarize yourself with church wording
www.mytarg.net

I believe I have a connection for you. My husbands great grandmother was John and Magdaline Kowalczyk. They had 12 children. His grandmother, Eunice (or Joan as she is called) is the youngest child and the only living child left. She just turned 95 and still lives on her own and still drives! She lives in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, and still drives to Lena to play cards once a week :-) Her brothers and sisters (not in date order) are Frank, Stanley E, Leonard, John, Annie, Helen, Frances, Sophie, Victoria, Mary, and Dora. Her father John was born in 1856 and died in 1941, and her mother Magdaline "Maggie" was born in 1868 and died in 1956. I am still doing research, but I do know that John Sr.'s father was from Poland. Do any of these names sound familiar? Let me know and I'll give you more information.

Kris
Pulaski, Wisconsin

I found my great grandparents marriage certificate today. The proper spelling of the last name is Kowalczyk. His name is John, he was 22 yrs old married in Three Rivers MA on February 7,1910. Fathers name Hylary, mothers name Franciska Kuza. States he was born in Russia as was his wife my great Babci, I believe it was a part of Poland occupied by Russia at the time of his birth.
He married Stella Haberek who was 19 years of age at the time of her marriage. She too was born in Rusiia, I use this term loosley as I beleive it was Poland, only unfairly occupied. Her parents are listed as John and Emilija Zurawska.
First marriage for both, they resided in Cheney_ Ville (Three Rivers MA (part of Palmer MA) for many years. Until their deaths I believe she died in 1969. They had many children, Bronilslava also known as Bridget T. Kowalczyk (my grandmother) who married Leo Brothers in Three Rivers MA . They were married in 19336, January 23. They were marrried at St Peters and Paul Church in Three Rivers MA She was 17 years old he was 21. His parents were Ernest and Alphonsine Mayotte. Bridget was one of many children of John and Stella, some others best as I can recall were Stashu or Stanislaus he never married but drank himself to death I belive in his 60's or older., Cecila who married John Opelinski and he ran Butcher shoppe in Wilbraham MA for many years. He was known as Uncle Butch to us, she was Chucchie Celia. There were more children but as they were my great Aunts adn Uncles I do not recall them. I don;'t belive I ever met John My great grandfather.. If anyone knwos anythign more about my family please accept my thanks in advance for passing along any information you may have. TY Kim

I have a birth and baptismal record of my great grandmother Regina kovalcik (also written Kowalczyk) her godmother was Anna Kowalczyk(when Regina came to america she changed the spelling to Kovalcik). Regina's father was Mathias. I can't make out the mother's name. Regina's place of birth was Krakow Poland. The document has a capital name as Zywiec. It's in latin so I don't understand everything. It's exactly this-----Respublica: Polonia
Palatinatus: Cracovie
Capitaneatus: Zywiec
Anna is definitely related to her!!!! It could of been her aunt?? Regina's birth date is 1876. What do you think???
