HI Ada,-I still find it so odd we can't tie our Kratt and our BOhrer together. Kratt is not so common and Bohrer/Borer a bit common in OHIO but not overwhelmingly. Refresher, my Fred Scherer married Catherine Carlina "Caroline" Kratt in Hardin County around 1878.-THEIR daughter Mary Caroline Scherer married Albert Bohrer in Ohio. I had narrowed the possibly parents for my Caroline Scherer and actually found her then on the LDS site..same birthdate.

Hi David,
John Schwarar was my Great great Grandfather and the name is spelt like that on all records in England except the 1861 census.

The family story is that John and 2 brothers arrived in England from Baden Baden on route to America. John and one brother stayed in England the other brother went to America, I dont know the name of the brothers. Not sure how John ended up in Sheffield but he married Sarah Barnes from Lincolnshire in Sheffield. The only time he is connected to Andrew Kratt is in the 1861 Census, it says son on the typed record but if you look closley at the actual census you can see he and Catherine King and Joseph Fass are listed as Serv. I would think Andrew and Joseph were apprentice Clock Makers, in other census he has apprentices.John became a very wealthy man owning a Pub called Old London 'Prentice at 1 West bar. He also owned a number of houses and shops. He had 1 son and 3 daughters, my Great grandmother was Matilda his eldest daughter. John George his only son was declared bankrupt in 1879 and disappeared to Cork Ireland where he starts again as a Clock Maker with a new wife and a son and daughter, leaving a wife and 4 children in England. Also in 1879 John Schwarar marries for the second time to Mary-Ann Naylor a widow, he dies in 1880 and leaves her his estate which wasn't large under 600 pounds I believe. My Great Grand mother Matilda married against her parents wishes to a steel worker. My Grandfather Frank Hague was her eldest son and all the stories came from him. He always thought they missed out on inheriting any of the wealth because of his parents marriage and the fact John married a second time. But it seems to me that by the time John died there wasn't much left.

If you google the Dale Dyke Dam at Bradfield nr Sheffield, you will see that John Schwarar is a claiment for a number of properties damaged when the dam collapsed in 1864.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Regards Janet

Hi David,

I'm afraid I don't know any thing about Andrew Kratt except that he was an apprentice Watch and Clock maker to my Grt Grt Grandfather John Schwarar.

I do know a lot about the Schwara's but only after John Schwara arrived in Sheffield, nothing before that. If you are interested in hearing any thing about the Schwarar family let me know and I will share what I know with you. I am sure the Kratt and Schwarar's must have known each other in Baden but we may never know how. Cheers Janet

Janet, This is interesting news. I have had no contact with the Schwarar family and I am now trying to get more detail on my Great Great granfather's early life. He moved from being an apprentice with your ancestor to Arlkow, Ireland where he married a Martha Green in 1862. He then moved to Northern Ireland in 1868 where he had a watch and clock business with another German, Scherzinger. There are court proceedings from this time as they had a business 'disagreement'.

It would be good to establish whether the Kratt and Shwarar families knew each other in Germany. Andrew's father is listed as being George, a farmer from Baden. This is the link in the chain thats completely missing., so any Shwarar detail you have may help.

Thanks David@kratt.co.uk

My Great Great Grandfather is John Schwarar [this is the correct spelling not as its spelt in the 1861 census] he was a jeweller clock maker in Sheffield, in the 1861 census Andrew Kratt is shown as his apprentice.

Hello Craig,

Searching for descendents of Martin Luther Haller (g.grandfather), born Aldigen, Germany 1864. Imm to U.S. arriving Balt, Md 1879. Settled in Camden, NJ. Died abt 1953.

Looking for his mother, Anna Kratt, from same area in Germany. Have found nothing on the Kratt/Haller connection but he does state all this in a diary of sorts that he kept
(Found out from another source that his father's name was probably Georg Kratt). He also says in diary that she married a neighbor at some point named John Hauser and had 2 children, John and Martin. Could not document this.

In diary he also refers to a brother Jacob Kratt. I was able to track Jacob as follows: born 1881 in Germany, imm to Galv, Texas in 1911, settled in LA Ca, and died there in 1965.

Rev Martin Kratt is Anna's brother and also uncle to Martin Haller and brother Jacob. All info I have on him agrees with what you have. He finally settles in NY city living there with his wife "Mina" and their children, dies there at the age of 94.

Hope you get this...maybe we can help each other.

Regards,
Les Spositi

Moved apparently to Sheffield, England as a Clock Maker to live with the Schworer family. Then moved to Ireland where he was married in 1862 to Martha Green. They then had children Frederick Leopold, Charles, Martha and Andrew all in Ireland, then moved to Scotland by 1881 where they were listed in the Census. Andrew died in 1918 aged 8. His son Leopold Frederick was my great Grandfather, his son Frederick Henderson ( 1902-1965) was my grandfather, his son Kenneth Moore (1933-1997) was my father. I am David Kratt (b1960-)).
The name of names

I am one of twenty individuals in the UK with name Kratt. They are all my close family. We don't have any idea of our family history beyond Waterford in Ireland in the early 20th Century. Before that we assume Villingen in the Schwarzwald, South Germany. Any links to Ireland or Scotland for Kratts would be great.
