The 103rd Annual Kresge Family reunion was held Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. We enjoyed a beautiful day with seasonable temperatures as we made new acquaintances and renewed some old ones.
The big news was the release of the 2009 Kresge family genealogy book, a work many years in the making. Family genealogist Atwood Shupp did a wonderful job of collecting information and compiling this massive volume. There is so much information in the new book that it had to be released on CD ROM rather than as a traditional printed book. The book features an astounding 2,000 pages (a register report) of information on the descendants of Conrad Kresge, the Pioneer, supplemented by over 260 pages of family photographs, scans of certain family vital records, biographies and other documents. Congratulations to Atwood and the many other family members (both living and deceased) who contributed to this important project over the years.
After enjoying lunch and the music of the Hometown German Band, the traditional cake walk began at 1 PM. This year’s walk was well attended and we had no problem making a rather large circle!
The business meeting began at 2 PM and was called to order by President Robert Kresge. In his opening remarks Mr. Kresge spoke about the need for additional volunteers for vacant board positions and the need to raise funds due to increased expenses associated with the reunion. Mr. Kresge’s remarks were followed by the traditional salute to the flag and the signing of “God Bless America.”
The minutes of the 2008 reunion were read and approved and this was followed by a call for discussions of old business and new business. The discussion of new business led into the election of officers, and a new Treasurer was elected with some of his duties also being assumed by President Robert Kresge. The remaining current officers and committee members were all reelected by general acclamation.
Next were the various committee reports. The Monument Committee reported that the Kresge Memorial in the Gilbert Cemetery is still in good shape, and the outgoing Treasurer reported that we has once again (just) stayed ahead of our expenses for the previous year. The genealogy report was delivered by Atwood Shupp, who spoke about the above-mentioned new Kresge family book.
It was decided that the 2010 Kresge Reunion would again be held at the West End Fairground.
Next we enjoyed the keynote address by guest speaker Richard B. Kresge, Sr., who talked about the difficulties our ancestors faced in their new homeland, and their need to turn to God for strength and guidance. Mr. Kresge is an active member of the Gideon’s International, an organization responsible for placing free bibles all over the world.
The address was followed by the traditional offering ceremony, before various prizes were given away for the oldest man & woman in attendance, the longest married couple, etc. The meeting was concluded by closing remarks from the president and the traditional singing of “God be With You Till We Meet Again.”
If you missed this year’s reunion, you missed a good one. Hope to see you there next year!
