My great-uncle Meyer Seltzer worked for HIAS. He was also in the Yiddish theater in NYC. I am trying to find more information about him. In 1948 he went to France-I think to help jews come to America. At the time he worked for a publishing company that had something to do with aid to Jewish immigrants...I think.

My grandmother was a Kriegel. Her father came from Saxony (Sachsen) in Germany with his parents and siblings in 1882. There was a large group of Kriegels who immigrated to Giddings, Texas around that time. Of course, they've moved around a lot by now, but some are still in that area.

Cherie,

I think I found out where in old Alsace Lorriane my great Grandfather came from. It is is a town called Haspelschiedt, Lorraine, France. I think there were many Kriegels from that area. I do not think he had any relatives here. Most people from Alsace Lorraine came here in the 1800's during the 30 year war with Prussia. You might want to look in Haspelschiedt.

My grandmother is Rose Catherine Kriegel. Her family is from Celina, OH. Her parents are Joseph J. Kriegel b. 30 Apr 1862 in Cranberry Prairie, Mercer, OH and Elisabeth Catherine Wobler b. 06 June 1865 in Sebastian, Mercer, OH. Joseph's father is Joseph Peter Kriegel b. 16 Apr 1836 in Schorbach, Canton Bitck, Dep Demosel, Lorraine Europe. I believe he usually was called Peter. His wife was Katharina Schuck b. 26 Sep 1827 in Wernberg, Germany. His father is Thiebault Kriegel. I have two conflicting dates of birth 03 Oct 1803 and 11 Mar 1803 for him. I am not sure which is correct. He was born in Schorbach, Moselle, Lorraine, France. I believe his father was also Thiebault Kriegel b. 21 Nov 1774 in Schorbach, Moselle, Lorraine, France. he was married to Reine Schuler. This Thiebault's father was Martin Kriegel b. 27 Feb 1725 in Hanviller, Moselle, Lorraine, France. His mother was Anne Marie Weber b. 29 June 1741 in Schorbach, Moselle, Lorraine, France. I have additional info on the more recent ancestors of my grandmother and would like to confirm the line of the French Kriegels as being correct. Please email me at csa7707@hotmail.com

I just goat caught up on reading this thread that I last contributed to in 2000. I want to make sure my email address which has changed since then is available to people in the this discussion. My family is from Vohlynia Gubernia, several villages and towns -Rogachev & Zhtomyr. In the US in New Jersey there is a big family & a family association established in 1929 that includes descendants of Isaac Kriegman who include the following surnames: Kriegman, Krieger, Krigman, Krugman. And, my father told me our beloved doggie Kriegel was named after a cousin by that surname. I was interested in Craig Salvays information from an early posting in this thread about the origin of the name related to word kryg, krig or krug. I finally found it in a Yiddish dictionary. It also is used in the name of an "innskeeper" . So a Krigman could be a person who manages or owns an inn!
Best wishes,
Diane Kriegman Claussen
Atlanta, GA, USA
didamike@peoplepc.com

My father's family has names that are variations of Kriegman. They lived mostly in the Ukraine. I heard as a child some story about family involving cousins or friends that related why we called all of our dogs (ho were esteemed members of our family, not meant as a negative) Kriegel. But unfortunately, I do not remember the story. My father is no longer living and we have been out of touch with the other Kriegmans, but I know there are still many relatives in US. Perhaps the Kriegel of your family could have been related and wandered off. I am interested in finding out more about the origin of the name in terms of history it has always seemed an enigma. Would behappy to hear of any ideas, thoughts of info. My email is didado@mindspring.com.

My Grandfather Yankiel (Jacob) Kriegel was born December 15,1883 at Kunov, Russia. He was admitted to the US on August 11, 1910 at the port of New York, NY. His wife, Sophie and Daugher Robie (Reba) came to the US on the ship Velhuna from Rotterdam, Holland in 1913. Reba is my Aunt and lives in Bethesda, MD. She is approximately 90 years old. Jacob and Sophie had two Sons -- Morris and Daniel born in Philadelphia in 1914 and 1918. Morris is my Uncle and Daniel is my Father. They are both now deceased. I live in Melbourne, FL and would like to get more information on my "roots" -- for myself and for my Aunt. Thank you.

I did not find much about the city except that it has a reservoir that I assume serves the local community. My Grandfather (Yankiel Kriegel) left for the US in 1910 and my Grandmother followed with my Aunt in 1913. All of my other relatives were born here later in the US. My Grandfather had a younger Sister and a Brother. The Brother (Izzy) came to the US before 1910 and the Sister (Shaindle) remained in Europe. She married and we lost contact with her.

If there is any way I could establish contact with her, it would be appreciated.

B.
Craig,
I have also been looking for information on the family name Kriegel. I would appreciate any information that you have including dates, names, etc.
My Grandfather Jacob (Yankiel) Krigelman came to the US at the port of New York on 11 August 1910. He was born at Kunov, Russia on December 15, 1883. I do not know his parent's names. He settled in Philadelphia, PA with his younger Brother Israel (Isaac) Friedman. His Sister Shaindle remained in Russia, was married, and no further contact was made. Her married name is unknown. I left the Phialdelphia area ten years ago and now live in Melbourne, FL. My Aunt Reba Hirsh in Bethesda, MD (his daughter) is 90 years old and is the only surviving member of that (second) generation.

Regards, Dave Krigelman

Craig,

I sent the following response to Sam:

***

My Grandfather, Yankiel Kriegel (“Jacob Krigelman”), came to Ellis Island in 1910 from Russia. In those days, in order for someone to emigrate they needed a promise of a job or a sponsor who would be responsible for them. His Brother Israel (“Izzy”) came to the US sometime prior to 1910
but not too much sooner since he was my Grandfather’s younger brother and my Grandfather was only twenty-eight. They both lived in Philadelphia for many years. Izzy lived in South Philadelphia and changed his name to Friedman and my Grandfather lived in Manayunk and changed his name to
Krigelman. My Grandfather died around 1945. I don’t know Izzy’s Wife’s name but everyone called her Mamie and I believe her maiden name was Bookbinder. I don’t know if the family still lives in the Philadelphia area since I have never had any personal contact with them.

Regards,

Dave Krigelman
Krigel Family

I saw your message about the Krigel/Kriegel family. My great grandfather was Zachariah Krigel and his brother was Rueben Krigel and they were born in Diotlovo (146 km SW of Minsk) Russia in about 1835. We know where those two branches of the family went...both to New York and, eventually, my great-grandfather brought his family (11 children) to Kansas City in about 1905 under the aegis of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. Zachariah had been previously married and had a family by his first wife, most of whom came to NYC with his first wife: The last names of the families that came from Zachariah's first marriage are: Galen (Patterson, NJ), Findelstein (NYC area), Subin (NYC area) and Shlanger (NYC area). The oldest of these relatives, now deceased, was Lillian Shlanger who kept in contact with the Kansas City Krigel family until about 1980 when she was institutionalized, I think. Anyone knowing something about these families, please write me: Craig@Salvay.com.

My relatives are Kriegels but we know very little about that half of the family. I do know that my great, great grandfather was named Israel Kriegel. He came from Russia. He married Channa Becker had 4 children: Aaron, Abraham, Jacob and Yetta. Aaron married Sarah Shapiro and had 6 children: Israel (Irving), Fanny, Abraham (Alter), Jacob (Jack), Benjamin, and Judith. Irving, my grandfather was born in 1905 in the US. This would have put Israel's crossing in the late 1800's maybe in the 1870's-80's Do you think this is the Israel Kriegel who came before your Yankiel?
I am looking for any info I can get.
I also have been told my grandmother's family, the Kriegels or Krigels, were from Alses Loraine. I don't know much about them. My grandmother's family settled in Boston where she met my grandfather, George John Verdos. She had one brother, I believe he went by John Kriegel but may have been F. John. He was killed in France during WWI.

If any of this might sound familiar let me know. Later my grandfather and grandmother resided in Chicago where they lived when my father was born.

This side of my family has always been a mystery. I think there might have been an aunt or uncle to my grandmother in Boston also.

Thanks for any information you might have.

Sincerely,
Cherie Spencer

My great grandmother's sister Dora AGINS married into the Kriegel family. I know that in 1915, Dora and her family were living at 881 East 170th Street in the Bronx. Does this sound familiar?

-Edward Rosenbaum

My great grandmother was Anna Kriegel...she married Edo Iken Henrichs...I believe she came to Texas with her parents from Germany before the Civil War. Any information would be most appreciated. Thanks!
