George J. Kuebel, Jr., age 93,
died quietly at home on Tuesday,
November 30, 2010.
He was born on October 7, 1917 in Erie, Pa. a son of the late George and Mabel A. Pratt Kuebel. He graduated from Academy High School in 1935, then earned a bachelors degree and a masters degree in History from The University of Pittsburgh in 1939 and 1942. He then served as a 1st Lieutenant with the Army Air Corp during WW II in the Mediterranean Theatre. George returned home and applied his skills in the family wholesale paper business, Durico Paper Company which was started by his father. He retired in 1984. Over the years he enjoyed flying airplanes, taking friends for rides across Erie County, motorboat racing and working on construction projects made of cement.
In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Halliday in 2006. George is survived by three children, Melanie Kuebel-Stankey (Randy) of Erie, Roger Kuebel (Candy) of Wenham, Mass. and Norman Kuebel (Karen) of Simpsonville, (Greenville) S.C. He also leaves two grandchildren, Heather and Julia Kuebel; one nephew, David Halliday of Maple Falls, Wash.; a long time friend, Mary Ann Desser. Friends may call at Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 602 West Tenth Street, Erie, PA 16502 on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and are invited to services there on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Burial in Erie Cemetery.
