I am a descendant of the Kujala family that lived in Fort Bragg, CA. My great grandparents were Henry and Lydia Kujala. One of their sons was John Kujala, my grandfather. John Kujala was married to Margaret and they had my father and a daughter. When my father was 6 years old, my grandmother remarried Charles Turner (of the Fort Bragg Police Dept) who adopted my father and gave him his last name. My father is John Henry (Kujala) Turner. My name is Yvonne Turner.

The Waino Kujala that is mentioned in this post would be my great uncle. I have met one of his daughters, Joyce, who is my father's cousin.

I've never known much about my biological grandfather and just started doing research on his family. I understand that he died in Texas in 2001. Any information on the Kujala family would be appreciated!

I´m interesting to have any information concerning my ancestors, who went from Finland to Canada.

My grand uncle Ivar Nikolaus Kujala was born 18.7.1886 Finland. Ivar left from Finland to Canada 17.11.1923 and his destination was Halifax.

My grand aunt and also Ivar´s sister Ida Sofia Jalkanen was born 28.6.1876 Finland. Ida left from Finland to Canada 01.12.1923 and her destination was St.John. She had her sons Tauno Elis Jalkanen and Lauri Johan Jalkanen and also her grandson Toivo Valdemar Johansson with her, when she went to Canada.

Tauno Elis Jalkanen was born 14.9.1913 Finland and Lauri Johan Jalkanen was born 3.11.1914 Finland. They used Lindberg as their surname instead of Jalkanen, when they were adults.

Toivo Valdemar Johansson was born 25.3.1917.

Also Ida´s elder sons Viktor Olavi Karlson born 13.3.1901 and Leo Lennart Karlson born 17.9.1902 went to Canada. Viktor Karlson left from Finland to Canada 20.01.1923 and Leo Karlson left from Finland to Canada 01.12.1923.

I was doing research on the Finnish side of my family and my great, great-grandparents were Henry and Lydia Kujala...they immigrated to the US and settled in Ft. Bragg, CA...could these be the same people you are asking about?

I have a bit of information on this family. Aside from the two children you mention, Amos and Hanna had three other children who died young:

Arva Johan Kujala, born 1 Jan. 1918 in Woodstock, Maine; died 10 Jan. 1919 in Sumner, Maine.

Martha Sofia Kujala, born 19 June 1919 in Sumner; died 15 Dec. 1919 in Sumner.

Agnes Johanna Kujala, born and died 29 Aug. 1924 in Jay, Maine.

Amos' wife Hanna ("Anna" in some records) was the daughter of John Jacob and Amanda Gustaava (Nuttila) Nurmesjarvi. She was born 27 Feb. 1896, and died 22 Jan. 1941 in Jay, Maine. She and Amos had married on 2 Feb. 1917 in West Paris, Maine.

All of these dates are taken from Maine vital records. I've spelled the names as they are given in the records, which are not always accurate when rendering Finnish names.

Jacob Kujala, who passed on to his glory in Astoria, Oregon, was my paternal grandmother's father. He used to come and visit us during World War II prior to his death.

He has a grand daughter, about 88 years old, still living on Page Hill Road, New Ipswich, NH 03071, named Mrs. Isaac Traffie [Jenny (Jean) Pyhala], telephone # 603 878-2326, who also has sons living near there in the same town or general area named Traffie, Michael in Ashby, MA, Alvin Traffie 187 Fox Farm Road, New , Ipswich, NH o3071, James, Mathhew, Wayne plus numerous great, great grandchildren in New Hampshire.

He also has a Grandson, Verner (Vern) ,alive, who is living with his daughter Lois, Mrs. Robert (Rob) Minton, 612 Bradley Circle, Midwest City, Oklahoma 73110, telephone # 405 733-3389 somewhere around 84 years old.

He has a Granddaughter Martha (Judy), Mrs. Lynn Wise In Milton-Freewater, Oregon. I would have to get you the particulars on Judie's current address, but I believe she can be reaced at 541 938-4850, at her daughter Donna's home.I believe Judy is about 82.

He also has his youngest grand daughter of the Pyhala relationship, Marion (Mickey), Mrs. Floyd Saranpaa, 5110 Highway 21, Embarrass, Minnesota 55732, 218 984-2031.

These are all of the remaining grandchildren that I am aware of. If you are still interested, and have not located any of this information we can get together on the internet and discuss further ot relatives. The Pyhala family alone, had a reunion in August of 2004 with hundreds of attendees. There are a granddaughter and grandson named Burke in Lead, SD, which I wwould have to do some digging on.

Kathy, can you give me any more details? My Great-Grandfather was Jacob Kujala and he had children from two wives, one died in Finland and the other my Great-Grandmother died in the US. My Grandfather was Thomas. My Grandfather was born in Michigan and lived in Upper Michigan. He had 4 daughters, so I think if we were related it would have to come from his generation. Looking for info and family of Liisa Kujula married to Elias Koivisto in Finland. Liisa was born Dec. 2, 1854 and died Dec. 1, 1940. She may have come to the states with her husband but have no proof. I have also been told Liisa's last name may have been Mattila. This is all I have for Liisa.
