Andrew KUNKLE, b. 1841, OH, of Adam & Margaret

This is a real puzzle.

Colfax County, Nebraska, GenWeb has a marriage record for Annie KUNKLE and William LAMBRECHT, Book 3, Page 430, by 1896. FindaGrave has the tombstone for William LAMBRECHT (1870 - 1945) & Annie (1869 - 1950). The stone doesn't say KUNKLE, but FindaGrave lists Annie as KUNKLE.

However, in Partridge Twp., Woodford Co., IL, 1860, there was an Andrew KUNKLE, aged 18.

In Richland Twp., Marshall Co., IL (adjoining Woodford Co. on the north)
KUNKLE, Adam, 67, & Margaret, 67, both b. Can you identify the wives of Andrew KUNKLE--Christine __ & Elizabeth __?

Anna KUNKLE (ca. 1870, IL - 1950, NE) m. Wm. LAMBRECHT

Do any of you have any information about Anna KUNKLE who married William LAMBRECHT? Her tombstone on FindaGrave says (1869 - 1950), buried in the City Cem., Schuyler, Colfax Co., NE.

Also of Colfax Co. were Prosper KUNKLE (1867 - 1953) & wf. Mary E. LAMBRECHT (1872, WI - 1939). William & Mary were children of Joseph LAMBRECHT & Eliza BERNINGER, also listed on FindaGrave.

Gazetteer of 1890 shows in Richland Twp., Colfax Co., NE, Andrew KUNKLE, in the same twp. as Joseph & Andrew LAMBRECHT.

In 1900, William LAMBRECHT & Andrew KUNKLE were of Lost Creek Twp., Platte Co., NE.

In Colfax Co., 1920, Andrew KUNKEL, 77, said he was born in Ohio; wf. Eliz., 73, Germany.

Census of 1900, Platte Co., NE, Anna [KUNKLE] LAMBRECHT, 28 [b. 1872?], listed herself & parents all b. IL. In 1870, Prosper was 2, of Marshall Co., IL, but I haven't found anything earlier in Illinois. The Illinois Archives database of marriages doesn't have any KUNKLE that early. Could Anna's parents actually have been born in Ohio?

USGenWeb > NE > Colfax County > Probates > KUNKLE:
Mary, 1936+
Prosper, 1946+
Elmore, 1966+, & Chauncy, 1976+ (sons of Prosper)
Gladys B., 1986+.

There might be an earlier connection. Joseph LAMBRECHT, b. 1841, NY, m. Hannah BERNINGER. RootsWeb has a BERNINGER family including Phillip, b. 18 Sep. 1781, Montgomery Co., PA, who had sons who moved to Wabash Co., IL. However, one of those could have been John, 37 in 1850, of Roaring Creek, Montour Co., PA. That's pretty close to the age of John BERNINGER, b. 29 Oct. 1814, son of Phillip, who married Eliza "KUENKEL."

And, stretching even further :-)

she could be Eliza BERNINGER (2 Nov. 1814 - 25 Sep. 1900), buried with Hannah & Joseph LAMBRECHT, b. 1841, City Cem., Schuyler, Colfax Co., NE.

Do you recognize any clues?

Re: Adam & Johanna Kunkle of Monaca, PA

Dear Michael,

Your Kunkel's sound intriguing! I've been wondering if my Kunkel's could have hailed from the Kunkel's James Kunkle sent me that were also from Erlenbach. I believe it may have been the same branch you are mentioning.

For me to make that jump, I would need to fill in approximately 100 to 150 years, from what Mr. Kunkle sent, to my Johannes Kunkel. I've yet to find the time or get past the barrier of German language skills to do that.

While my Kunkel's were Catholics in the US, I've no idea if they were before coming to Pittsburgh. They had a son die within days of arriving in Pittsburgh and the local Catholic church buried him because they were so new to the area and no longer had the resources in which to bury him. The family may have continued going to that church because of the church's original generosity.

As far as the elder Conrad Kunkel being from Flörsbach, I've no idea. Until I can fill in those missing years to make a connection to them, I think I'll keep it on the back back back burner. I did find the Johannes/Conrad Kunkel's of that early Erlenbach line promising, as the names Johannes and Conrad are found in my own Kunkel family. I believe it is why Mr. Kunkle sent me the line in the first place. He thought it might help as I kept on researching my own family and also hoped that my family was using a naming pattern.

The birth date for my Johannes Kunkel are from 2 sources:
1. The 15 Aug 1851 ship's manifest when they emigrated lists Johann Kunkel, age 36.
2. Johannes death record per a church record lists "Johannes Kunkel; died 7 Dec 1855, Birmingham, buried 8 Dec 1855, aged 41 years."

If these 2 records are correct, his birth date would be circa 1814/1815. Since he died in Dec 1855, I've been leaning toward 1814.

Johannes wife, Margaretha Fuchs, has been more elusive. The emigration record states she was aged 27 (born c1824); 1860 US census aged 43 (born c1817); 1870 US census aged 56 (born c1814) & 1880 US census aged 62 (born c1818). The contact that found the Fuchs family births found a Margaretha Fuchs born 1 Feb 1814 to Jois Fuchs and Christina Reung (Reussing). Thus far they found 9 births to these parents. According to them the parents married in the village of Sailauf but they did not go into detail as to where the 9 children were born. This info was passed to me by a Bavarian contact who in turn knew a Bavarian Fuchs descendant who had been researching the Fuchs surname. I lost contact with my friend as she had a sudden death in the family and she was devastated at the time. I did a bit of homework to see what Jois represented and I found that it is said to be an abbreviation of the names Joannes, Johannes, Johann or Hans.

I was able to ascertain Erlenbach and Eichenberg as Johannes and Margaretha's birthplaces due to a baptism for their daughter, Catherine, one of their later US born children. As follows: Catharina, born 4 Feb 1853, Birmingham; baptized 13 Feb 1853; father: Joannes Kunkel, Erlenbach, Bavaria; mother: Margarita Fuchs, Eichenberg, Bavaria; sponsors: Joannes Adamus and Catharina Glaab." The next and last US born child's baptism is as follows: "Michael, born 26 Feb 1855, Birmingham; baptized 4 Mar 1855; father: Johannes Kunkel, Bavaria; mother: Margaretha Fuchs, Bavaria; sponsors: Michael Fruth, Susanna Stenger."

After Johannes died in 1855, Margaretha remarried 2 Jun 1857 to Berhard Pfleghar, who died 13 May 1870. The church record lists "Bernhard Pfleger, widower to Margaretha Fuchs, widow of Kuhr; witnesses: Sebastian Humann and Johan Wagner." It's believed the Kuhr is a transcribing error on the part of the original entry and should most likely be Kunkel. They had two children, which also confirms Margaretha's maiden name as Fuchs.

I also found Margaretha and 2nd husband in census records with the Kunkel children and also his will which names the Kunkel children, along with his children from 2 prior marriages, and his son with Margaretha as his heirs. Johannes Kunkel and Bernhard Pfleghar are both buried in the same cemetery in unmarked graves, per church records, but Margaretha is not there. It's believed, by me, she left the area with one of her still living children, although which one is unknown as they all appeared to have left Pittsburgh. This is why I can't seem to place a more accurate date on Margaretha's birth. The records I do have has her age listed between a ten-year span. A death record, if found, could be more accurate I hope.

I also believe this Kunkel family was literate. I have a naturalization record from 1869 where Conrad Kunkel, oldest son of Johannes & Margaretha, signed his name in German script (translated it was Konrad Kunkel). Next born son and my ancestor was Johann Adam Kunkel and I have several documents with Adam's signature but these are all in English. I've no idea if he could also, at one time, do the same in German. Other than brother Conrad's signature in 1869 in German, I've no idea if Conrad could do the same in English. Conrad died in Pittsburgh in 1885, so I may not find anymore documents with his signature on it. I'm unsure if the rest of Adam and Conrad's siblings were literate but it appears the two oldest boys were to some degree.

In reference to the Ernstkirchen church records you mentioned, have you been able to gain written access to these records and do you know of which religion they are affiliated? If I were to try and write to them for research purposes, would you have an address and would I need someone to translate my letter to German beforehand and then afterwards?

Lila

Dear Lila,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I have found my Kunkel also in the church record of Ernstkirchen, which is (or was) in charge of Erlenbach near Blankenbach.
My ancestor is Elisabeth Kunkel from Erlenbach + 13 Apr 1720 Schneppenbach, married 5 Feb 1675 Ernstkirchen to Andreas Scherer from Sommerkahl (Sonderkahl). Her father was Conrad Kunkel + 29 Jan 1693 Erlenbach, her brother Conrad Kunkel, married 5 Feb 1675 Ernstkirchen (yes, a double wedding) to Margaretha Scherer, sister of the fore-mentioned Andreas.
Would be worth to dig deeper in the Ernstkirchen church records. I notice you have some approximate date from that area, what is their source?
I am not yet convinced if the elder Conrad Kunkel was indeed from Flörsbach (as suggested in the Kunkel database), have you found any proof?
Michael

Michael,

I believe it is the village of Erlenbach in the municipality of Blankenbach (area code 63825, county of Aschaffenburg.

My reasoning is a record that states Johannes Kunkel's wife, Margaretha Fuchs, was born in Eichenberg. Given they were married circa late 1830's, mostly likely between 1836-1840, I was looking for an Erlenbach & Eichenberg that were fairly close given the timeframe. These 2 in Aschaffenberg are within 4 kilometers of each other with Eichenberg just southeast of Erlenbach.

Clues:
1. Our Kunkel's were known to be glass blowers from Bavaria and Erlenbach in Aschaffenberg appears to have large forests close by and glass blowers would have needed large amounts of wood for their craft.

2. I also found birth registrations in Sailauf, also in Aschaffenberg, and about 4 kilometers southwest of Eichenberg, for Johannes' wife's family name of Fuchs that "might" be her family. If this is Margaretha's family, it appears she had 3 brothers with birth registrations to the same parents with the name Johann Adam Fuchs. Johann Adam was the name given to Johannes & Margaretha Kunkel's second son, my ancestor. I'm hoping the Kunkel's may have been using one of the known German naming patterns.

I could be incorrect in ascertaining which Erlenbach and Eichenberg I've focused on but I think the Aschaffenburg district is the most likely and promising one thus far.

Lila

Re: Jacob S. Kunkle

Dear Ted Kunkle, Thank you so much for responding to my questions concerning Jacob S. Kunkle. You have just verified all of my research and findings on my "lost Kunkle family"...of which you are a part. Just recently I had the break-through which I have worked so hard to find; the missing link that joins my family to a long line of Kunkles, Kunkels, Gunkles, Conkles, which extends back to Hans Kunkel, born abt. 1530 in Glasshouse, Neuhutten, Germany. I have a CD with 43,274 names on it. It was researched by a James E. Kunkle, who has been doing research on the family for many years. He had published several books and prepared the CD for individuals who provided him research information. I would be delighted to burn a copy for you if you are interested. I also have my own Kunkle file which included my research of some of James' work as well. I will share this information with you if you are interested. I hired a research several years ago to help me identify my parts of Kunkle line. She found a lot of info, but wasn't able to make the link - connection to George Henry Kunkle, father of Jacob S. Additionally, years ago my mother gave me a copy of a letter that my anunt Ada Lovila Kunkle wrote to her. In the letter she gave the information for her parents, John Ailbert Kunkle (son of Jacob S.), and her mother, Sarah Melind Roulston, and all of her brothers and sisters. She also included some family history; that's where I found the information about Jacob's brothers and where they ended up: David in Wilson, Ellsowrth, Kansas; and Adam, in Nebraska. She wrote about family reunions in Kunkle Ohio and in Wilson, Kansas. As the oldest daughter, born in 1889, she personally knew her grandfather, Jacob S. He died in Ellsworth, Ellsworth Co., Kansas in 1898, so she was about 9 years old at that time. My great, grandfather, John Albert was Jacob's executor. They lived on the adjacent farm land until Jacob's death. John retained the farm for a number of years, until he finally moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he died and is buried. I have traveled to St. Joseph, and met many of my Kunkle relatives still living there. They took me to the cemetery where John Albert is buried. James Kunkle's CD verifies the death places for Adam and David. Adam died in Nebraska, and David in Kansas, which also places them where Aunt Ada said they had moved. So...by putting everything together(Ada's letter, James Kunkle's CD, the Researchers information, and my research into census records, all the puzzle pieces came together. It has been rather miraculous the way all the information came together to link with George Henry Kunkle. Then your response of several days ago also was one more link. So my Kunkle line begins with Mable Leona Kunkle and extends to Hans Kunkel. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my querie. Do you know if they still have reunions in Kunkle, Ohio? I'd love to go to one. I would appreciate if you would share all the Kunkle information which you have. I am most happy to do the same for you. To make it easier to contact me my direct e-mail address is Patricia Hendrix via jhendrix@burgoyne.com. Snail-mail address is: 8122 East 820 South, Pleasant Grove, UT 84062. Telephone (801) 785-4112. I am also very intersted in learning the complete maiden name for Jacob S.'s wife, Sarah. Bye for now, most gratefully, your cousin Patricia M. Hendrix.

Re: Kunkle/3 brothers

My 4th great aunt, Mary Zulauf>Sulouff, married a John Kunkle (also Cunkel) and her first son, John, was born before August 1820. She had three younger sons named Jacob, David, and George (perhaps not in that order). Evidently they lived somewhere in the area that is now Juniata Co., Cumberland Co., Perry Co. or Dauphin Co. PA. Mary's husband, John, may have been an attorney who worked in Harrisburg. Mary died sometime before 10/29/1828 (about age 43?) and she is buried near her parents' graves at Port Royal, Juniata Co. PA., without her husband or her sons in the same cemetery. Her gravestone includes her husband's name, which appears to be "John L.(?) Cunkel, Esq." but his signature and their son John's signature on estate papers for Mary's father appear to spell their surname Kunkle or Kunkel.

This John Kunkle and his sons, John, Jacob, David, and George seem to have left that area of Pennsylvania and I have been unable to pick up the trail for any one of these five men.

Your mention of Kunkles who moved to "Williams County Ohio from Perry County, PA in the mid 1800's" excites me! I'm eager to learn if you see any possibility that perhaps they are closely related to my "lost" cousins who moved away so that I cannot locate them. I will appreciate any response from you that might shed light on this question.

Sincerely,

Rev. Nelson R. His parents were Quinton Kunkle (1875-1950) and Clara LaBold (1870-1949).

I am specifically seeking any information re: the parentage of Quinton Kunkle. I have seen his father may be John Kunkle-- but the source I've seen is Ancestry world tree, which has many inaccuracies. Any help you can give me in this would be greatly appreciated!
Everet and Mary Elizabeth (Loudon) Kunkle

Hello - I am looking for information on Mary Elizabeth (Loudon) and Everett Elmer Kunkle who were married about 1908 - perhaps in Minnesota. Everet had a daughter, Cecelia, by a previous marriage. Everet and Mary had a daughter, Fern, who was born 21 Feb 1910 in North Dakota. Fern married Verl Curtis Weaver and they had a daughter, Sharron Lee, 31 Jan 1940, who married Anrold Sandberg. Mary Loudon was a sister to my grandfather, Erwin Greeley Loudon. I have a lot of information to share :-) Thanks, Susan Manz Graham sug53@earthlink.net

Josephine Lavene (Konkle) Kunkle was the daughter of David M. Kunkle and Susan Shawley (Susan was Daughter of Conrad Coon Shawley and Sofie Fredrika Kastner. David Kunkle was the son of John Kunkle and Jane Larimer.

David M. Kunkle was born 09 Apr 1854 and died 13 Jan 1929.
Susan Shawley was born 1853 and died in 1904 She has a hand engraved tombstone in the Kregar Community Church Cemetery. I know this and have actually seen it. She was the mother of 4 daughters:Josephine Lavene "Jesse"(Konkle) Kunkle who married Daniet Tinkey, Mary A. (Konkle) Kunkle who married Seamore Queer, Barbara Ellen (Konkle) Kunkle who married George Washington "Pete" Harbaugh, and Malinda "Linda" A. (Konkle) Kunkle who married Hiram T. Pritts.

David Kunkle is buried in Bakersville Cemetery. The tombstone has been mistakenly transcribed as Dan Kunkle.
There was no record of any Dan Kunkle in the area at all. Dave is buried beside his sister Margaret (Konkle) Kunkle and her husband Jonathan Shawley.

1860 Census David Kunkle Listed age 8 actually 6
1870 Census not listed, would have been 16
1880 Census David Konkle age 27, married to Susan age 26
1900 Census David Konkle, age 46, married to Susan for 25 years
1910 Census David M Kunkle, age 56, maried to 2nd wife Josephine for 3 years
1920 Census David Kunkle age 66 Married to Josephine

(chesk spelling because the transcription from microfilm may show Kunke for the 1920 but is is clearly Kunkle.

Jospephine was David Second's wife. There was no one named Gorrian anywhere near Kregar. That was a mistake someone made since there was another David Kunkle in Westmoreland County but not the Kunkle Family from Camp Run. I know since this is my family. I am descended from David's Brother Samuel. I have the family tree with the dependents of John Kunkle and Jane Larimer from 1833 to present day.

Note:
Obituary Connellsville Courier (died 23 Apr 1957)
Mrs Josephine Kunkle, 80, Stahlstown RD 1, died Monday at 4 a.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs, Hiram Pritts, Stahlstown RD 1. She is survived by her step daughter Mrs, Pritts and a sister, Mrs. Lucy Wadsworth of Dunbar. Friends were received at the Boyd Snyder Funeral Home , Stahlstown, after 10 a.m. Thursday. Funeral services were here there Thursday at 2:30 p.m. In charge of Rev. Homer Weaver, Pastor of the Stahlstown Methodist Church. Internment was in Bakersville Cemetery, Somerset Co.

From which Kunkle do you descend. I am from Johann Sebastian Kunkle on down to Elizabeth Kunkle who married Joseph Serfass (I think it's Joseph, have to check my records) Their son Nathanial was my ggg grandfather and my grandfather's middle name was after his first name. Nathaniel married Lydia Ann Strohl and their daughter Lydia Ann Serfass married my gg grandfather, Edwin D. Strohl. From whom my g grandmother Elizabeth Strohl came and she married Alvin F. Schaffer and gave birth to my grandfather Leon Nathaniel Schaffer.

Just curious who you descend from.

thanks for the link I got the whole book downloaded.

Lucy H

He does.

He's a cousin.

Lucy

I know there are loads of Kunkle.s but I wonder if the Adam Kunkle listed in one post who was born around 1840 was the one who married my gg grandmother Lydia Ann Serfass who eventually would up married to my gg grandfather Edwin D. Strohl. I saw somewhere where Adam Kunkle and lydia Ann had a child Mattie Jane Kunkle, but can find no records to attest to that nor if Adam died that Lydia eventually married my gg grandfather Edwin strohl. Also Lydia Ann Serfass/Kunkle/Strohl eventually died a few days after giving birth to my g grandmother Elizabeth J. Strohl who married Alvin Franklin Schaffer. Lydia was born in 1850 and died in 1872. I have a photo of her tombstone. I can find nothing on Adam and the baby Mattie Jane.
Anyone have any info on this marriage and child I would most appreciate it. I know Adam Kunkle is not related to me, but I do descend from the Kunkles. By way of Hans Jacob Kunkle and Elizabeth Ickus.

thanks very much.

Lucy H

I'm sorry to report that I don't believe there is any connection between the Kunkle's I talk about from Perry County, PA and the family you are looking for. I guess it's possible that there could be a common ancestor if both sides were traced back to German. The George "Heinrich" Henry Kunkle I refer to was born in 1792 in Berks County, PA. His father was Jurg "Jacob" Kunkle from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.

I have seen the reply from James Kunkle of Colorado to you and I offer the following. I am a direct decedent of Henry S Kunkle, the brother of the other two brothers you mention -- John Henry and George. They did in fact move to Williams County Ohio from Perry County, PA in the mid 1800's. There was for sure one additional brother -- Jacob S who also came to Williams County Ohio. Some of us think there as also another brother by the name of Jeremiah but we can't be sure yet. I'm not sure either about the William that James Kunkle mentioned. There is an area in Williams County, Ohio (once called Garrett's Crossing) that was renamed to Kunkle, Ohio in honor of Henry S. Kunkle who settled there. It is still there and so are some of the old homesteads. The other brothers (as well as their father, George Henry Kunkle) settle nearby in small town areas by the name of West Unity and Stryker (both in Brady township, not Brandy)and also in Bryan, the Williams County Seat. I was born and raised in Bryan. There were also some half brothers & sisters (from George Henry Kunkle's 2nd wife Catherine Ohler) that also migrated to the same general area of Ohio at about the same time -- specifically Defiance County which is just south and adjacent to Williams County. Their names were Adam, David, Benjamine and Eliza Jane. You indicate that George Henry was married to a Mary Storm and a Catherine Shaffer. I believe that should be "Stone" and "Ohler." I can give you a whole lot more on this family if you'd like. What is your connection with this family??

We probably should talk. My gg grandfather founded the town of Kunkle in Williams County, Ohio. Originally, my gg grandfather and g grandfather ran the store. Later (1950's), another relative of mine ran the grocery store. If they lived in Kunkle, Ohio -- they are probably relatives of mine. I was born and raised in Bryan, Ohio. Let talk if you think we've got a connection.

Ted Kunkle
tedwkunkle@verizon.com

I'm not sure if we have a connection but my last name is Kunkle. I was born and raised in Bryan, Ohio. My gg grandfather, Henry Stone Kunkle, founded the town of Kunkle, Ohio in about 1856. He and my great grandther, John Calvin Kunkle, at one time both had the grocery there. I remember when I was a child, in the 1950s)I would go to the grocery in Kunkle with my grandfather and gradmother (Henry and Elsie Kunkle). At that time, some relative of mine then ran/owned the store. Do we have a connection? Ted Kunkle

Henry, Jacob & Daniel Kunkle - Perry Cty, PA in 1850

The 1850 census for Madison Twp, Perry County, Pennsylvania shows three Kunkles - Henry (b abt. 1797), Jacob (b abt. 1801) and Daniel (b abt. 1791). All three are listed as being from Berks County, PA. I'm reasonably certain the Henry listed is George Heinrich "Henry" Kunkle who was first married to a Mary Stone and later to a Catherine Ohler. Are these three related in some way -- possibly brothers, and who are the parents?
