I am the granddaughter of Anna Elizabeth Metzger, and am interested in Gustav Kunz and Bertha Hammer, and any further info you have on them.
I knew Aunt Mary Kerber well as a child, as she was very close to her sister Anna.We lived in Rochester. I also knew Mary Jane and her family well, but not the other siblings who were much older.
Anna had 4 children, Clement,William, Herbert, my father, and Rita., and 5 living grandchildren, 2 in the Rochester area.

William Kunz - Scranton PA

Interested in finding others who may be researching William Kunz in Scranton PA. William F Kunz was born abt. 1860 in PA. I believe he is the son of Peter and Elizabeth Kunz, although I have little data to back this up. I'm just making an assumption based on census records and city directory data.

William married Catherine Hagner and had 4 children Edward, Minnie, William and Harry. Edward, Minnie and William all died young leaving no descendants. Harry had 2 children who survived into adulthood - Harry Jr. and Betty. Betty never married and never had any children. I'm descended from Harry Jr.

I'm hoping someone, somewhere is researching a sibling of William F. and may have some data to share. I know very little about this man as him and Catherine divorced when their children were young and she moved to Philadelphia. William must have died between 1920 and 1930 as I can find him on the 1920 census, but not on the 1930.

Elizabeth

Hi again, Uncertain at this time if the Kunz's married the Bauers since 1866 or prior too. You mentioned Gustave Kunz near Berlin. Did he come to this country and live in the Oranges? The reason is to find a connection with him to my family of Kunz's. With that info, I could check the sensus to determine maiden names and siblings. Like to help and find out more. Let me know. Thanks

Frank Kunz

Hello,
Not sure that this is your Gustav Kunz. When my grandmother died on Dec 26,1936 the undertaker who handled her funeral was Gustav Kunz. His address at that time was 41 No. Center St, Orange, NJ. Just checked it again on her death certificate.
Jean Bauer Kirspel

Mary,
I don't think I can help you much with Delmar Jacob Kunz. In fact, I think you have more information than I do regarding him and his children. Here are some things I have different from you--you may be able to sort it out, if you are a closer relative to him than I am.

Wives: I have Bertha Renner, as you do, but I have a different second wife, Lucille Kauffman; no third wife.

Children: I don't have a Peter, instead I have Paul David, married to Kathryn Strong. I didn't have spouses for Mildred, Martha, or Viola. Do you have a spouse for Viola?

As to Delmar's ancestry, I think I covered most of what I have in my previous posts. I did notice I have a typo on the date of Caroline Kunz's death; it should be 1880. If you have any specific questions, I could see if I have any information that would help you.

Linda

Hi,
I just discovered my ggg grandfather, Abraham KUNZ. He was born in Pieterlen, Bern, Switzerland on Nov 14, 1805 and came to the US in 1850, along with his wife Marie Jaeggi (or Jaggie) and their 9 children. Apparently they settled in Jefferson CO, NY according to the 1850 census. I think they might have gone to NYC or LI after that. For now, I am only sure that Margaret, my gggrandmother, ended up there. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

The other children are: Maria, Marianna, Friedrich, Johann, Anna Barbara, Louis Albert, Charles August, and Jules Albert, all born between 1829 and 1849 in Switzerand.

Thanks in advance!
Louise

Adam Kunz and Maria Schmalz? Switzerland>New York>Ohio

Adam Kunz, born 1828 in Switzerland; died 1881 in Franklin County (Columbus area), Ohio. Wife, Maria Schmalz?, born 1829, per tombstone, probably in Switzerland; died 1872 in Franklin County, Ohio.

Their children: Elizabeth, Mary, John, Frederick, George, Caroline, Louis. Elizabeth born in Switzerland; Mary and John in Rochester, New York; remainder in Franklin County, Ohio, which is where they generally remained. Louis is my great grandfather.

I'm seeking confirmation of Maria's maiden name, and any other information about her. Although Maria Schmalz (or some variation of spelling) appears on death certificates of most of the children, and on Louis' birth record, there is also some evidence that her name was Mary Eberhard. Recent research suggests that Mary Eberhard was actually a sister of Adam, and therefor aunt to the children.

Thank you in advance.
Merrill,

What you have is very consistent with the information that I have. You have a few details that I don't have and I will give you just a few additional details, with a couple of questions below.

Elizabeth Barbara and Wilhelm David Weber: 9 children--
John Louis
Caroline/Lena
Mary E.
Emma Marie
George W.
Rachel
Edward
Clara
Elizabeth Pauline
Since this is your line, I will presume you have information on these; I have some birth/death dates, spouses/children.

Mary: married Cornelius Bettinger; died 1934
Children--
William
Frank J.
Mary A.
Siddonia
Anna Katherine
Margaret

John B.: I have same spouse and children

Frederick: I have a first wife, Anna Koehler, who was mother of 3 children; Elizabeth is second wife, thanks for a maiden name. Anna's children--
William
Herman C.
Emma

George: I have 4 additional children
Edward
Charles F.
Theadore "Jess"
Delmar J.
Clarence "Bill"
Lillian

Caroline: died 1980

Louis: married Elizabeth Lehnert. This is my line. Children are correct; I have exact birth and death dates for each. (Uncle Carl George just died last year, at age 99.) Louie and Lizzie's son Curtis was my grandfather, his daugher Virginia is my mother, still living at age 82.

In addition, my mother thinks Adam and Mary/Maria may have had a son David, who died in infancy. I have found no other evidence of this.

Questions:
1. I'm curious about any documentation for Adam Kunz's wife's maiden name. Other researchers have told also told me that it was Eberhardt. I have death certificates for most of the children and indeed, John B.'s does list Mary Eberhardt. However, Elizabeth Kunz Weber's lists Mary Schmalz, as do most of the others. I have Louis's birth record and it lists Mary Schmalz. My first theory was that Adam had two wives--Mary Eberhardt and Mary/Maria Schmalz. My latest theory is what I put in my original post, that Mary Eberhard is Adam Kunz's sister. This is based on church and canton records that a cousin found when visiting Switzerland earlier this year. She was actually researching the Eberhard name when she found that Adam Kunz had a sister named Anna Maria, who married a Jacob Eberhard. Anna Maria Eberhard came to the US after Adam, and after her husband Jacob died. She lived near Adam's family near Grove City, Ohio. The second part of my theory is that after Mary Schmalz Kunz died in 1872, Mary Kunz Eberhardt became involved with taking care of the young children, resulting in some confusion about Adam's wife's name in later years. It IS confusing...

2. Do you know anything about a John Cummins who was living with Elizabeth Kunz Weber in the 1920 census, Grove City, Ohio? He is listed as a grandson, but I've been unable to identify who his parents were. (Actually, I think I know his father, but that's a story for another post)

Feel free to contact me directly by email to discuss further. I have FAR more information; I thought it was worth adding this much detail as it may prompt others to respond.

It's nice to find another Kunz cousin. I grew up around Grove City, but I now live in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Linda Everett Hayden

Yes, I have more information. Elizabeth Kunz Weber was the eldest child of Adam and Maria, probably born in Switzerland. She was my ggaunt, sister of my ggrandfather Louis Kunz.

Can you give me more information about what you would like to know? I have some information about her descendents, but also a lot of blanks--perhaps we can help each other fill in the blanks.

This is the father of Andrew Kunz in the preceding string...

On Sunday just at mid-night occurred the death of Andrea F. Kunz, a well-known and much beloved resident of Denison and a man who was undoubtedly the most widely travelled of any citizen Denison has ever had. For many years before coming to this country he had followed the trade of ship carpenter, both in the Danish navy and on merchantmen. In this capacity he three times circumnavigated the globe and had been in nearly every land. He was a quiet, undemonstrative and few aside from his intimate acquaintances knew that he was the most travelled man in Denison. He was a great reader, a kindly, honest man, a devout Christian and a deep student of the Bible, a good father, a loving husband and an up-right citizen.
Funeral services will take place at the German Methodist church this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. G. E. Kienle officiating.
The deceased was born in Apenrade, Schleswig-Holstein on August 31st, 1828. On November 2, 1855 he was married Miss Auguste Lorenzen and they celebrated their golden wedding at the home of their daughter Mrs. Von Dohlen but a year and a half ago. Mr. Kunz learned the trade of builder and carpenter and entered the Danish navy in that capacity. He was with his ship during several engagements at sea and afterward was employed on various merchantmen. He was a careful observer and his travels gave him a wide fund of information. He came to America in 1881 settling in Denison and following his trade until the infirmities of age forbade.
He was the father of eight children, five of whom, four daughters and one son, survive him. They are Mr. W. Schiernbeck of Davenport, Mrs. William Von Dohlen, Mrs. Bertram and Mrs. John Schnoor of Denison and Andreas Kunz of Granite, Oklahoma.
To the aged and grief-stricken widow and to the sorrowing children we extend sincere sympathy.

Source:
Denison (IA) Review
Wednesday, May 1, 1907

Genealogy and DNA testing

Our similar sounding surnames (Coon, Koones, Koons, Koontz, Coonts, etc.) have been mispelled so many times through the years by well-meaning recorders that it's difficult if not impossible to know by surname spelling who a person is. My GGGGrandfather's name was spelled Cone, Coon, Koontz, in the same county in just a twenty year span.

Here's some new information about DNA testing that may help some people:

Regarding genealogical DNA testing, here's a little more information to help calm fears about insurance companies using DNA information against us:

May 21, 2008

"President George W. Bush signed into law today the the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA - the first and only federal legislation that will provide protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in health care," said Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). "Americans can finally take advantage of the tremendous potential of genetic research without the fear that their own genetic information will be used against them."

Just a few weeks ago, GINA received overwhelming support in both the Senate, with a unanimous vote of approval, and the House of Representatives, where the legislation was passed by a landslide vote of 414-1.

The health insurance protections offered by GINA are expected to roll out 12 months after the bill is signed, whereas the employment protections will be fully realized in 18 months.

Specifically, the legislation protects against genetic discrimination by health insurers or employers by:
Prohibiting group health plans and issuers offering coverage on the group or individual market from basing eligibility determinations or adjusting premiums or contributions on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting issuers of Medigap policies from adjusting pricing or conditioning eligibility on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers may not request, require or purchase genetic information, and may not disclose genetic information. Similar provisions apply to employment agencies and labor organizations."

Everyone of us loses millions of skin cells every day, sheds hair (or get it cut), clip our nails, lick envelopes, and otherwise leave our DNA all over the landscape. We've been doing it all of our lives. If insurance companies wanted your DNA, they would have had it long ago.

Further, your name does not need to be associated with the test results in any way, if that's the way you want it done. You can collect the sample and then use only the surname to identify the sample. (FTDNA would like to keep the surname associated with the sample for research, but other information such as first and middle name, etc., can be left blank.)

The Coon/Coons/Coombs/Koontz, etc., etc., DNA research group is at FamilyTreeDNA.com There are 59 members and 30 have found a connection with another member. www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon
