I will look into this but have not heard of a Rosalia Kurowski. I know of a Peter Liss but this is not the age range you a looking for. I also have knowledge of the sir name Blochowiak but again not 1896 timeline.

I have a somewhat detailed listing of the Stephen F. Kurowski family on a web site. It also list other relatives from the area. I just started it and will hopefully be adding info as I find it. Again, if I discover anything that might be of interest to you I will contact you.

http://project57.org/family_forum/

Regards

My Dad remembers visiting relatives in Pulaski in the late 1930's. He says that his father and Uncle would go to a bar and visit with peanuts. This bar was owned by a brother of the great grandmother - Rosalia Kurowski. Rosalia married a Blochowiak and was widowed in 1896. She remarried a Martin (Peter) Liss. I have Rosalia up to 1930 in the census but can find no info on her death or burial.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Pam

I am from Pulaski and a Kurowski. My grandfather owned a few taverns in Pulaski 'Stephen Sr.' but do not know of a Peanuts owning one. However do remember a 'Peanuts'. I believe he was connected with a meat market.

Will try to get some accurate information and if I do will post again.

P.S. My brother is a Peter Kurowski but never owned a bar or a nickname of peanuts.

Regards

its funny that u r ashamed of ur surname n use spelling that looks kinda silly, tell ur husband to change his name or surname so it sounded better to u ;)

and your surname doesnt end in AIA only A
so if ur dad is Kurowski (-vski) then ur surname is Kurowska (-vska), -aya/aia sounds rather Russian

n to ur knowledge, the center of Europe is in Poland
also ppl of Poland are one of most educated ppl n have rich general knowledge n are appreciated by foreigners,
somehow in the US Poles are seen as a stupid nation which is rather silly and when sayin so ppl cant give any reasons to support their opinion so it cant be reliable.
take cos take a random Pole and a random American n then see who is smarter, even if u just talk bout general things like geography history etc i bet American wont do good- tried it many times so i know, in entire Europe its the Americans who are considered to be ....u know who + multiple reasons are given (its not what i say or came up w/ im speaking in general how its seen in here)
anyways, gd luck
Kurowski Family

I am looking to see if there are any decedents I do not know of, or if anyone has any information on my family's past. I also want to know where in Poland my great grandfather originated.

Frank Kurowski born on October 5, 1894, died in 1981. Settled in St. Joesph County in Indiana (I don't know when). He married Anna Grzewienski(Grzywienski--I had two spellings, born in 1905.) on October 7, 1929. Anna immigrated to New York, USA on September 28, 1928 from Syberja, Poland.

The couple had three kids; Dorthy Kurowski (Putz--married name), Edward Francis Kurowski, and Raymond Kurowski.

Edward Francis Kurowski is my dzia dzia (Grandfather) so I know most about him. He had 9 kids with Jo Myers in South Bend Indiana, which are my aunts and uncles; Edward, Mike, Barbra, Margret, Carol, Mark, Doris (Dorie), Mary Jo, and Patrick (who is my father).

Kurovski/Kurowski Spellings

I understand the different spelling to Kurovski/Kurowski etc. My uncles spell their last name Kurovsky because that was the orginal spelling in the Slovak Republic. My ancestors came from northern Slovak Republic and I would put bets that the Kurovski and Kurowski are somehow connected. I'm going to the Slovak Republic in April 2000 to do some research near Dubinne and Svidnik. My cousins are helping me obtain family records. I would like to hear your thoughts about whether the Kurovski/Kurowski may be related. Feel free to email me at david.kurovski@mail.sprint.com
Thanks.
David

that's right, we're cousins. Are you out on the west coast? My father, John Kurowski is Joes' half brother. I saw my Uncle Joe from Brooklyn this summer at a wedding of Joes' sister Helens grandson. Haven't seen that side of the family in years. Joe was not ill of health other than old age, but rather spritely, dancing with the girls and making the typical jokes. I do not remember his son Richard or his other son (?name) as I was a little girl when they moved to California or were in the army or something. E-mail me back, I'd love to know more. My grandmother, your great grandmother was a mystery to me and it'd be nice to have some stories of her. I met her once or twice before she died. Write back!!!!

I verified today (spoke with my mother) that your father John was the younger half-brother of my grandfather. (confused yet?) That would make you a cousin (or half-cousin) of my father. I do not have alot of info on the Kurowski side of the family. I've been told your grandmother had quite the singing voice and that is how my great-grandfather met her. She was scrubbing the stoop in front of her residence and her voice garnered his attention. I have a couple of other items if you want to contact me via e-mail.

I believe that the Joe you refer to is my grandfather. This story (and I think the name Kurowski) fits what my father (now deceased) had told me about his side of the family. My father spent most of his life in Brooklyn and there is still family there. The last I had heard (from my uncle) is that Joe was in bad health but still lived in Brooklyn. He mentioned his grandmother being Polish and that is where I got the connection, along with Joe and Peter (my father had an uncle named Peter in Brooklyn) Is it just coincidence?

Kurowski Family

Thanks for you enquiry. I have put the basic information I know on this site. I do know that the family last lived in Riewalde which is in the province of Gdansk. The last child (my grandmother) was born there as well as the first. The other 2 were born in Dirschau (Tcew) and the other Stargard. They travelled to Hamburg and sailed 10th April 1876 to Wellington, New Zealand. Since then the name became Crofskey and there have been numerous descendants. No one has been able to discover if Franciszek had any brothers and sisters but it is very likely that he had as research has shown a lot of Kurowsjkis in the area but we are not able to actually connect the families to ours. There are still Kurowskis living in the Gdansk area. We have made contact with one but he has not yet done family research going back that far. I have heard that the family had an uncle in Germany who they stayed with before they boarded the ship to NZ.

Also the family had connections to the Prussian army. I have found 2 officers names on an early 1800 army list.

Kurowski

I am writing to begin to research the part of my family I know nothing about. My grandmother was Mary (sp?) Kurowski who died in the late 60's-70's. She had come from Poland at some point and lived in New York (brooklyn area). She had been married to a Stanislaus Kurowski. She had one son named John Kurowski, my father, who although not an orphan, spent time at Mount St. Loretta in Staten Island. I do not know her maiden name or from where in Poland she came but Mary Kurowski was first married to someone named Blyn and had three children named Helen, Peter, and Joe. They came from the Brooklyn area. Any connections out there?

I absolutely agree

Normally, family names ending with -ov(w)sky(i) originate from Poland, were they would spell with a W, but then people settle in another country and try to adopt the spelling of their name to make it read as close to the original as possible. Or to make it easily recognized and pronounced.
My father spells his last name in Latin as Kurovski, in France to achieve the same pronunciation you would need to spell it as KOUROVSKY. I think, therefore, that often confusion starts because of differences in the alphabet and pronunciation.
Originally they transliterated my last name from Cyrillic in the French manner as KOUROVSKAIA and all the French I met pronounced it perfectly. However, Americans and Brits just murder it.

So I would guess that all the variations are just that - different variations of spelling the same original name.
Furthermore, I would suspect that your ancestors come from Poland originally, and just settled in Slovakia.

Good luck with your research, I hope you find out a lot of interesting facts. I would be interested to hear what you've learned, so keep me posted if that is not too much trouble.

Have a good trip and let me know if I could be of any further help or if you have any other questions.

Cheers,

Anastasia

Hi..
Great to hear from you.. sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.. The family records are mostly sketchy however at the moment we have a family relation from Poland staying with us.. his name is Ludwig Kurowski and he will be glad to have you come and visit him.. he heads back to Poland this Sat. and I will email his address and phone number to you soon.. he is still trying to find out the origins of the family.. however this is hard because most documents have been destroyed.. church records probably hold the most information.. however as I say if you send me an email address I will forward his address on to you.. he will be happy to meet you and has already had other family members stay with him.. my email is nicorjon@ihug.co.nz
Good luck

Kurowski family

Hi - Sandra and Nicola, I was also at the family reunion and am now working in England. I will be going to POland soon on holiday and am interesting in seeing where the family originated from. I believe my grandad, (who died before I was born - so I could not ask him anything about his parents); was the son of Yohan (? - doing this from memory as I do not have a copy of the tree with me in the UK) who was 2y.o. when he arrived in NZ. Do you have any addresses of where the family lived in Poland before coming to NZ?

I was also wondering if you had any luck in tracking down the date and place when the family name changed to Crofskey from Kurowski? Because of the major differences used by people when recording the name I have yet to pin point the exact date when it was changed.. any info would be great.

Hi.. and thank you for your message.. I am also interested in finding out more about the family.. I was also at the reunion in Taranaki.. My father is Leonard Edward John Crofskey and he was born in Oponaki his father had the same name and married Mavis Jefferies. When my Dad went to Poland last to research the family history he met with a Ludwig Kurowski, and he is flying over to New Zealand next week.. he might be able to shed some light on the origins of the family however if you know of any sites that translate Polish to English please tell me as I think it may be a bit difficult as he has limited English.. But what ever I do find out I would be happy to share with you.. please feel free to email me personally on either crofskey@hotmail.com or nicorjon@ihug.co.nz I would like to find out what records you have..
Kurowski Family

I am looking for connections to my Great Grandparents Franciszek and Franciszka Kurowski (born F. Kaminski, possibly in Riewalde, Poland 27.1.1854). They came to New Zealand from Hamburg on the Fritz Reuter with 4 children 16 April 1876. I know that the family lived in Tcew, Stargard and Tczew but have been unable to link them with other Kurtowski families in these areas and we do not know where Franciszek originated from or was born.

Any help with connections would be appreciated as I have records of all the family in New Zealand.

Kurwoski Family

Hi Nicola
I was browsing this part of the web and came across your message. I am some sort of cousin to you but have not been able to confirm which family you are from. Mr Grandmother was Maria (Mary).

My husband (Richard)and I did the research and wrote the book for the reunion in 1990. Since then, I have found a few errors (we had difficulty getting a lot of the older relatives involved) and the recollections were always very sketchy.

I have found in the LDS records (Mormon Chuch) that Maria was born in Riewalde on 25.3.1876 and baptised 27.3.1876. They must have got to Hambutg and sailed soon after. Her mother was born Francisca Kaminska, born 27.1.1854. Father Joseph Kaminski (b. 1824), mother Catharina Swieczkowska. They married 28.9.1850. I have a long list of Kaminski names and a few Kurowski names from that parish but trying to link them as family is difficult. I think Francisca's family had 8 children.

I would like to know if you have had any luck with helpful replies.

Looking forward to hearing more from you. Please email me orI live at Urenui, Taranaki and my phone number is 06 7523289.

There are a few realtives who are interested in finding out more information and I keep in touch with several I have got to know since the reunion.

Regards,
Sandra

The latter married John Gschnell (later changed to Schnell and also Snell) in 1885. John and his 2 sons from his first marriage plus his two younger sons went to California in the early 1900's.
