Do you know Anna's parents names and the town or village she was from? My great grandfather was Andrew Kushner, born in August 1845 in Zsebfalu Hungary (now known as Zupcany Slovakia). His father was Stephen Kushner, Suzanna Popovic. Until recently, I didn't know the name of the village he came from, only that it was near Eperjes Hungary. The Fanily Search website recently posted Church records from this area in their record search pilot program. I am still trying to mine this for additional info but in my research I noted quite a few Kusnyir's listed in the Baptismal, marriage and death records. If Anna came from here also, you may find her record and we might be related.

John Clancy

Hello. I am pretty sure about the year of birth. I have a copy of his NY City death certificate from 1920 which indicates a date of birth of August 19, 1845. Andrews sons were Emerick Stephen Kusner, born November 9, 1868, based on a copy of his NY City death certificate (his NYcity marriage certificate indicates age 21 as of 1888, and birthplace as Eperjes Hungary) and Charles, born Novemeber 3, 1872, based on the info on his NY City death certificate. My grandmother, Mary, the youngest of the childen and the only one born in the US, also used to mention that she had another brother named Alec or Alex, who was also a tailor like their father, Andrew. I recall her mentioning that he was killed in a trolly accident but I have never been able to locate a death record for him in NY City. So, it would appear that your Andrew Kusnir was probably not my great grandfather but I'm wondering whether they were possibly cousin's. The one clue I thought might be most helpful was Andrew's wife (appolonia) maiden name of Hollenkay which seems to be a very unusual last name. But it's so unusual I have only been able to find 1 obscure reference to a Jan Hollenkay listed in a school in Saris (or saros) around 1901. One last thing about the family. My grandmother mentioned that she had cousins who were apparently connected to the Austro Hungarian parliament that were executed at the end of World War 1. Unfortunately, I never really asked her for any details and I don't know which side of her family they were on.

Nymick2,
I was just re-reading this post. My family Janos Kusnyir and Sophia Almasy were from Davidfalva (now Davyove) 10 miles from Mukachevo. You mentioned that your family was from Uzhorod (sorry if misspelled). My family is from the Mukachevo area, less than an hour from your family. Based on Carpatho-Rusyn naming traditions, we believe Janos Kusnyir's father was Basil Kusnyir, though this has not been confirmed.

I've attached a photo of Janos Kusnyir and Sophia Almasy.

I have also moved my website
http://www.kusnyir.org

Christina

Hi

Well, the only information I have on my Kusnir family is pretty much what I listed above. Great great grandfather was Andrew (Andreas) born about 1845. He came to the US about 1877. He was a tailor. His sons were born in the area of Eperjes (Presov) Slovakia, county of Saros. His last child was my grandmother Mary, born in New York City in September 1885. The only names I'm aware of are Hollankay (my great grandmothers maiden name) and Andrews mothers maiden name which was Popovic. I don't know about any brothers or sisters he may have had. He lived in New York City until he died in 1920. His wife Appolonia (Pauline) died in 1911 and both his sons Charles and Emerick died in NY (1912 and 1919). So, as far as I know, none of the names from your family are familiar. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Scott.
It was great to hear from you. Have done significant research on your grandfather and have discussed him with Bob Summers on several occasions. Bob and Morris were great friends, and Morris helped Bob start his own very successsful rod business. Would like to discuss this with you further.

I was googling "Morris kushner" and came across this message. I sent an email to the author directly, but it bounced back, so I am posting here.

I am Morris' grandson, living in Ann Arbor, MI. I am a filmmaker and when I was in college (some 25 yrs ago) I made a documentary about him. I own 3 Kushner rods, and have a few Kushspoons laying around in the old tacklebox I have that was once Morris'.

Don't know if this email will find the interested party (Lanny Whetstone), or if he is still interested, but feel free to contact me if you' have any info. I am attaching a photo of Morris.

--Scott Mann (scotious@umich.edu)
I am looking for information about Anna Kushner and her family. She was born 1877 in Austria Hungary. She married John Horbaly, born January 7, 1862 in Austria Hungary, on May 13, 1892 at St. Michael's RC Slav Church in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

They had children Mary Emert (1900-1962), Anna Bill (1902-1984), Andrew (1904-1964), Helen Rosensky (1906-1957), Katherine Simboli, and John (1913-1965). There were three other children that died as infants, all born before Mary. All children were born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

John died September 30, 1925 and Anna died February 15, 1936. The only documentation I have so far is the 1930 Census. Everything else is from my grandmother's notes.

Anyone who would like to exchange information should feel free to contact me. Thanks!
Hello, Frank!

I believe that you were contacted by my cousin, Gayle Kuschnereit Crawford some time ago. I, too, am interested in the Kuschnereit family, but run into brick walls all of the time!

In the early 1980s, I spoke with a Rovina Kuschnerait who was an airline stewardess for PanAmerican Airlines. She was/is a Lithuanian and said that her family's faith was Lutheran, going back to the Reformation days of Martin Luther (our Kuschnereit as well as one other I have found have Lutheran roots.) She also said that Kuschnereit was spelled "Kusznerait" (with a small triangle symbol over the 'z')in Lithuanian.

In looking at history, Lithuania and Poland were one and the same country for many years. The area you are interested may well be Lettland...the Letts were staunchly of the reformed faith in strongly Catholic Lithuania/Poland. I have also seen Kuschnereit listed as an aschkenazi Jewish name.

Would enjoy corresponding with you.

Gary Kuschnereit, Midwest City, Oklahoma
LuTeaPrin@aol.com

Kushner or Kushnier family

Looking for information about the Kushner or Kushnier family who came to Philadelphia in the late 1800's or the first few years the 1900's. My grandmother, Anna, was born in Philadelphia to Sophia Kushnier or Kushner. Her mother's maiden name was Amashi, or something similar to this. There were many children including another daughter named Mary.

Thank you!
Chris

Eddy,

I'm not sure if your mother is related, due to the fact that I have no information about my grandfather having a sister, but he did have two brothers, one that we have info. on and another that no one seems to know anything about, so why not a sister as well.

The information I do have may help us in knowing if there is a relation. My great grandfather was named Jacob Kushner, he died Sept. 18, 1937 and was married to a Anna Machiz. They had two or three sons, one named Irving (my grandfather) and Bernard, the third I have no information on. I think they were all born in the United States.

Let me know if any of this makes any connection for you.

Dana

Kushner (Kusnir, Kusnyr, Kusnier and other spellings)

Looking for info on My greatgrandparents Andrew Kushner and Appolonia Hollenkay (or Hallenkaj). They came from Eperjes Hungary which is now Presov Slovakia. Andrew was a tailor borna circa 1845. Appolonia was born circa 1847. They had at least 2 children born in Eperjes, Emerich, born about 1868 and Charles, born about 1873. There may have been another son named Alec or Alex who may have been killed in a trolley accident. Andrew's parents were Stephen Kushner and Suzanna Popovic. Andrew came to the US in Nov 1877 and may have retuned and came back with the family in early 1880's. They settled on Pitt Street in lower manhattan and my grandmother, Mary Kushner, was born in September 1885 in Manhattan. Any information about the family in Eperjes or anywhere else in europe would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't know of any Kushner family that lived in the Philadelphia area. All my Kushner's settled in New york City area. Depending on what Janos date of birth was he could have been a brother or nephew of my great grandfather Andrew. Andrew was born approx 1845. Do you have any info on Janos father's name? Interesting that Janos had sons named Stephen and Andras since Stephen was Andrew's fathers name.
While it is possible there is a connection, there doesn't seem to be enough info yet to tell.
