Mary Kuzel Jagatich 1919-2013 WWII WAAC

HERMITAGE, PA. – Mary M. Jagatich, 93, of John XXIII Home, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.

She was born in Sharon, Pa. on April 26, 1919, a daughter of Michael S. and Agnes M. (Markusic) Kuzel.

Mary served our country proudly during World War II with the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and was stationed in Tucson, Arizona before her honorable discharge in 1943. Following her discharge, Mary went on to marry her sweetheart, Maj. Ferdinand S. Jagatich on Oct. 10, 1943, at St. Anthony’s Church and together they would share more than 64 years of marriage and their four children, Carl, Cynthia, Celeste, and Paula.

Mrs. Jagatich enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and feeding the wild animals that visited her family’s home.

She leaves behind her son, Carl Jagatich of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; three daughters, Dr. Cynthia Simpson of Pleasant Plains, Illinois, Celeste Mathieson and her husband, Thomas of Grove City, Pa., and Paula Riley and her husband, David of Galloway; her sister, Helen Bralich of Farrell, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 23, 2008; four brothers, Michael, Anthony, Frank and Joseph Kuzel; and four sisters, Bertha Rudar, Ann Carine, Kay Lawrence, and Dorothy Fox.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel, 6923 Warren-Sharon Road, Brookfield, OH.

Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the start of the services on Wednesday.

Entombment will take place at Crown Hill Mausoleum, where full military honors will be observed.

My dad was Dale Kuzel and his mother was Bernadette Kuzel and her mother was Anne..I don't know what her last name was. I know we are of Czech decent...They lived in the GF and EGF area...

Hi Bryan,

I believe you and I have talked before. My great grandmother was Anna Kuzel, daughter of Joseph and Antonina. I've been doing some research on this family, but also haven't had much luck tracking the Kuzel's back across the pond. I'd be interested to compare notes.

Adolph Kacerovsky was married to Anna Severa, Anna had a brother named Frank Severa owned a Bakery in Baltimore, Md.

Adolph Kacerovsky had 2 children, Charles John Kacerovsky and Annie Kacerovsky. I believe Annie married a Jacob Blahnik in Wisconsin..

SEWICKLEY, PA. – Michael Gaborko Jr., 84, formerly of Hubbard, Ohio and Sharon, Pa., died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at Golden Hill Nursing Home in New Castle, Pa..

He was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Holsapel, Pennsylvania., a son of the late Michael and Mary (Shirilla) Gaborko.

He married Marie Morsillo Gaborko in 1969, she survives in Sewickley, Pa.

Mr. Gaborko was owner and operator of Arrow Auto Sales and Foreign Import in Leetsdale, Pa. for many years.
He attended Westminster College and Youngstown State University and received a degree in Psychology.

Mr. Gaborko was a Army veteran of World War II, served in Europe with the 82nd Air Borne Paratroopers. He was an avid trumpet player and played with many area bands over the years.

He is survived by one son, Michael Gaborko III of Sewickley; one daughter, Gloria Mash and her husband, Jim of New Middletown; one stepson, Frank Mench and his wife, Cindy of El Paso, Texas; one stepdaughter, Lisa Snyder and her husband, Douglas of Butler, Pa.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held at the John Syka Funeral Home, 833 Kennedy Dr., Ambridge, Pa. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at noon at the John Syka Funeral Home. Pastor Louis A. LaGatta will be officiating.

Entombment will be at the Mt. Olivert Catholic Cemetery in Aliquippa. Members of the Beaver County Special Unit will meet at 12:30 p.m. at the cemetery mausoleum to provide Full Military Honors for Mr. Gaborko.

Funeral arrangements are by the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home.

My name is Mary Gaborko and my Mother was Dorothy (Kuzel) Fox, Tony's sister. Interestingly enough, my sister Monica and I are working with many of the other cousins to do the Kuzel family tree. I would be very interested in communicating with you-maybe we can help each other. I live in California and on a recent trip back to PA and Ohio, we took pictures of Tony's gravestone.

The Anthony Frances Kuzel that i am looking information on was born 16 Feb 1914 died Jan 1986, Masury, Trumbull County, Ohio. He was married to Mary Agnes Cmar born about 1913 in (Probably) Sharon or Farrell, Mercer COounty, Pennsylvania. Mary's parents names were; Michael Cmar and Anna Tirpak. This Michael Cmar was my Great Grandmothers Brother.
I am wondering if any of those names sound familiar to you? Do you know what your Grandfather Martin's mother name was? Or where John went to when he returned to the old country?
Would you know where Anthony is buried? or Martin? Peter?

My name is Paul Kuziel. I live in East Haven Connecticut U.S.A. I have two older brothers who are Raymond and Mathew. My fathers name is Edward who had 3 brothers(John, Joeseph, Frank) and one sister (Francis). His father was Martin who came from Poland who served in the Austrian army in WW I. He had 3 brothers (John, who went back to Poland) Anthony, and Peter. That's about as far as I can go.

I see that you have Kacerovsky listed in your family names. My Great Grandfather's sister, Anna Toman, Married a Frank Kacerovsky. This would have either been in Bohemia/ Austria/Hungary or Czech.

Hello Kathy...I believe that your mothers maiden name would be Wiechowski (sp.)...if so we are related. I can't really add to much to what you know, but I can give a bit more information. I have yet to find someone who knows the town, or even the region of Bohemia that the Kuzel's came from. I'm not even 100% sure that the name was even "Kuzel" when they lived in Bohemia (the earliest census I've seen "1875" has the name Kuserkua or possibly Kuzelka...I can't really read it". Judging from the time period they immigrated here "Between 1863 and 1873" the most likely reason they had to "Flee" from Bohemia was the Austro-Prussian war. Less likely, but possible is that they had political reasons for emmigrating as many Bohemians did not agree with the policies of the Austrian Empire. When they did immigrate they were in Illinois for a time as Anne Kuzel was born there in 1873. We could have possibly found where they were from by her birth records, but Chicago and it's records went up in flames in the late 1800's. By 1875 they were in Montgomery, MN where a lake was named after them (Kuzel Lake which was later drained to make a road). I've actually visited the original farm down there and it's quite nice. The first Kuzel to come here was Josef Kuzel (who is buried in the old Tabor Catholic cemetary). He was born in 1815 and was the father to my great grandfather John J. Kuzel, Frank Kuzel, Anton Kuzel, Anne Kuzel (Holy), Anton Kuzel and a couple of other children who's names I can't recall at the moment. I contacted a couple of Czech Genealogist, but they cannot search for more information without knowing the region or town where the Kuzels came from. I'm confident that it's either South or Southwest Bohemia, but am not sure. Someday when I get the time and money I'll go to look in the archives over there....It's a beautiful country.

The Slovak Republic's phone book is listing KUZEL, KUZELA, KUZELOVSKY, KOZEL, KOZELKA.
www.zoznamst.sk If they were from the same Spis region as HUTNIK than the surname KOZEL shows up in that area.

I am one of 7 Kuzel children born in Minnisota. I was born in Bemidji, and my father's name was Lawrence Kuzel, born in Tabor, Minnesota. His mother's name was Annie and his father's name was Frank Kuzel.
I know that they were decendents of Kuzels in Bohemia.
I also remember hearing the name "Gust" while growing up.
I believe that most of my relatives were from the Grand Forks area.
I would be very interested in finding out more about the earlier Kuzels and who they were in Bohemia. I heard they had to flee, why, I don't know.

My grandmother Veronica (SOBOLIC) HUTNICK died in 1926 suddenly and her obit showed CHARLES KUZEL and his wife of CLEVELAND, OHIO as relatives. Wanting to find out if Charles wife was my great aunt. My family came from Czechoslovokia in 1902 and I believe the Kuzel name is Czech also.

Your father Warren and my husbands father Ray were cousins. My husbands grandmother on his father's side was Josephine Kuzel. She married James Toberman. Joseph, Anne, Mary and Stacy were siblings of Josephine. That made them my husbands fathers aunts and Uncles. If I have my calculations right you and my husband our second cousins. I have been in touch with your father for the past three years.

Greetings. I'm the son of Warren and Beverly Kuzel of Coal City. Although I live in Washington, D.C. now, I frequently return to Coal City to visit my family and see friends and relatives in Coal City. Franny and Kathryn (Kuzel) VanDuyne are my uncle and aunt and Stella (Ryan) Kuzel was my grandmother on my father's side. My father and his sister, Kathryn, don't seem to know a lot about their family history, probably given the fact that their father died in 1933 or so. But I have heard about a Toberman connection. Interesting How close our information is. My GGGrandfather name was Joseph Anton Kuzel (b-1843) who married Antoninia Guslin (b.1838). Came to US in Mid 1880 from just outside the town of Seltschan (ie Seldan) Bohemia, settling in Ohio. Think we can get to gether and explore what the relationship could be?

My father grew up in Canaryville (back of the yards) in Chicago. His name is Francis (Frank), his father's name was Michael, his mother's name was Margaret (Walsh). His mother died when he was young and his father got re-married
to a woman named Gertrude Foley.

Just found out that Anton "Chiton" Kuzel is also one of Josef's sons. Anton "Chiton" Kuzel had 4 sons Anton, Andrew, Adolph, and Albert and one daughter, Mrs. John Holy. So heres new list of Josef Kuzel's children

Frank Kuzel b.1850
Anton "Chiton" Kuzel b.1851
John J. Kuzel b.1863
Anna "Kuzel" Holy b.1873
James Kuzel b.1878
Josef Kuzel b. 1880

Considering that Josef was 35 when he had Frank, and there are large gaps between births there may have been more children in Bohemia or the USA.

Looking for relatives of Josef Kuzel and Antonina (Kral) Kuzel both born in early 1800's Bohemia.. Josef may have had another wife in the Czech Republic and children that remained there. Of his children that came to the United States were Frank (b.1850,Bohemia), John J. Kuzel (b.1863,Bohemia), Anna (Kuzel) Holy (b.1873, Chicago Illinois), James (b.1878, Le Sueur County, Minnesota), and Joseph (b.1880, Le Sueur County, Minnesota). Josef Sr., Antonia, Frank, And John J. probably came to the United States in the early 1870's stopping briefly in Chicago where Anna was born. Next they appeared to have moved to a farm near Montgomery where the remaining children were likely born. They named the lake near the farm Kuzel lake (unfortunatly the lake was later drained to facilitate a new road), but today there is still a Kuzel Lane that leads to the old homestead area.

There was another group of Kuzels living side by side Josefs family. This was the Anton Kuzel family, Antons father was born in the early 1800's near the time of Josefs birth, so one could speculate they could possibly be brothers, making Anton Josef Sr's, nephew. Anton and Elizabeth (Kral) Kuzel's Children were Albert, Anton Jr, and Andrew (there may also have been female children).

Josef died in 1894 in Polk County Minnesota and is buried in the old "Haunted" Holy Trinity Cemetery. Frank seems to have been married to an Anna Wiechowski in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Later they moved to Olmstead County either near, or in Rochester Minnesota. John J. married Kathrine Eidelbes near Tabor, Polk County, Minnesota. James married Emma Kuzel and lived near Pine City, Minnesota. and Joseph married Anna Marjek and lived in Polk County Minnesota. Unfortunatly I've been unable to track the Kuzels back to their hometown in Bohemia as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for info on Frank Kuzel who was born in Minnesota and was the father of Albert Paul Kuzel, Charles Kuzel, Anna Kuzel and Cecilia Kuzel.

One of Franks brothers was John J. Kuzel from Tabor, Minnesota. Frank was the son of Joseph Kuzel and Antonina (Kral) Kuzel. Frank was born on December 3, 1850. He may have moved to California because both of his sons Albert and Charles have death records from this state.

Looking for information on Joseph Kuzel, born in 1815 in Bohemia. He married Antonina (Kral) Kuzel. Antonina was born in 1834. The had three sons, Frank Kuzel, John J. Kuzel, Joseph Kuzel Jr., and a daughter, Anna Kuzel. Frank and John were born in Bohemia. Joseph and Anna were born in Lanesburg township (present day New Prague, Minnesota). This is where Joseph and Antonina must have been living at the time. Please post any info, on any of these people if you have it.

Actually, it was only my grandmother and her oldest son who came. My grandfather had died and my grandmother was getting her eldest out to avoid his being drafted. I have no info whatsoever on my grandfather and this problem is driving my inquiries! How would one get in touch with Zelow public records?

It is interesting that your grandparents came to the US from Zelow in 1912. That is the same year that my grandmother came. She came in September via Rotterdam. Charles Miller will be spelled Carol Miler in the Zelow records.

This makes sense. My grandmother's family( Kuzel) migrated from Czech. I am interested in tracking down her my grandfather, Charles Miller, on whom I have no info. whatsoever. They lived in Zelow until she came to the US in 1912.

Zelow was never part of Bohemia. The Czechs who lived there were exiles from Bohemia who came there in 1802. I am a descendent of Anna Miller who died in Zelow in 1849. Her father Jan Miller was a farmer in Gross Friedrichs Tabor Wartenberg called Sycow in Polish which may be where your family lived before coming to Zelow.
