Minnie Laabs

I am trying to research the Laabs portion of my family tree. My great-great-grandfather was Albert Schwarzenstein. He married Minnie Laabs. They lived in Iowa. That's pretty much all I know for sure. However, I did find an obit for Esther Marie Magdeline Laabs, daughter of Herman Laabs that mentioned that one of the funeral services' "sponsors" was Albert Schwarzenstein so I'm guessing she was related to Minnie somehow, but can't figure out how.

In case it helps, here is what I've found so far about Esther:

Father was Herman Laabs.
Mother died on 22 Mar 1935
Esther born 24 Nov 1902 in Stapleton Twp, Chickasaw Co, IA
died 13 Dec 1937 in car accident in Canby, MN
married Harold Sillman (I have more info on Harold's family if you want it)
children: Dennis Odel - invalid (25 Aug 1930 - 10 Dec 1937)
Marlys - b. ~1931
Warren - b. ~1932
LaDonna - b. ~1934
Harold Jr. - b. ~1935

Other children of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Laabs:
William
George
Leo
Earle
Milton
Lula - married Tim Dudden
Alice - married Clarence Tilsbury
Alma - married William Nelson

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

My aunt is married to a man named Gerald Albert Laabs and he would like to find out more about his family background. His mother lived in Minnesota while he was growing up then moved to Flaggstaff, AZ after retirement. I know I need to get more info from him to get much if any info from anyone else, but I thought I would at least throw my hat in the ring. Gerald was born Sept. 1945.

The names you mentioned are very familiar. My husband's grandmother was Lula Laabs. Other siblings were Esther, Alma, William, Leo, George, Ernie, Milton, Alice. Their parents were Herman and Mary Laabs. They lived in Freeland Township, Yellow Medicine County and would have had a Canby address. Alma and her family still live on the family farm which has become a Century farm having been owned by Laabs family members for more than 100 years. My sister in law has more information if you need. She has attended the Laabs/Jarchow reunion in Iowa in the past. Patti Haas, Canby, MN

Theresa Laabs, Minn. (1864-1949)

Theresa Laabs was married (abt 1887) to Charles Wacholz (b abt 1855, Germany). I have the two of them in the 1900 and 1920 census (District 190, Warren, Winona, Minn.). The census records only show her first name, but I get Laabs from the death certificate of one of their children (Arthur Otto) where the mother's maiden name is listed. Per the census Charles is listed as born in Germany and Theresa in Minn., but that her parents came from Prussia/Germany.

I'd appreciate any help with finding Theresa Laab's ancestry. I have plenty of info about their decendents so I don't need any help searching that direction, but I've hit a brick wall going further back. I see lots of Laabs in the area but can't find a specific connection. If you happen to bump into info on Charles Wacholz, I wouldn't mind hearing about that either. :)

Dan

Laabs and Peters connection?

I am looking for a connection to the Laabs and Peters families in Wisconsin. I'll try to explain here but it gets complicated.
My Great Grandfather was Christian Peters from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He came to the USA in 1869 and settled in NE Wisconsin. On both in declaration of intent and his Naturalization papers, the Witness was Charles Laabs. Charles Labbs was married to Louisa Klawitter. They were Witnesses for my Grandfathers Baptism (August Peters). My Mother tells me now, that my Dad(deceased) said he was somehow related to the Laabs. That brings me to this question: Do any of you have a Peters in your family tree????
Thanks,

What I've found...

William Laabs - civil war vet. MN 10th infantry. Lived in LeSuer Cnty. in Minnesota in 1862. at age 29.

Herman Laabs - married Meena Muchow (daughter of Frederick and Wilhelmina Muhow) after she killed her 1st husband Fred Rose by locking him out in the cold thus causing him to catch pneumonia.

Albert Laabs & Marvin Laabs - sons of Herman Laabs

Roger Laabs (my father) - son of ALbert Laabs. Born 1945.

My father, Roger, spawned me, Jarrett Laabs, and my brothers Matthew and Thomas.

this lineage is fairly solid. i just want to make absolutely sure William is Herman's father. anyone know? Once I discover this, i can start linking back to pre-civil war periods.

any help? e-mail me at jayl@conceptgroup.com

The story of the Texas Laabs

Okay, here is the story, as it was told to me. Two Laabs brothers both left germany, leaving one brother behind. The last brother lost all the Laabs holdings to gambling. When he came to Mexico to tell the other what had happened, one of them immediatley had a heart attack.

This explains the heart disease in this branch of the family, if nothing else. I don't know if that screwed all you guys up or even helped you a little bit...but I felt that I had to contribute something.

P.S. Any word on a coat of arms?

Help! I'm a novice.

Hello,
As you know, my name is Michael Scott Laabs, son
of Michael Lester Laabs. My grandfather's name is
Lester Otto (spelling?) Laabs and his deceased wife
Clara Laabs. The were living in the outskirts of
Chicago, I can't remember the town. My grandfather
currently lives in Pocatello near his daughter Linda
Hall. With limited information that I have, can
someone please help me? I would die to know where
my family comes from and meet other relatives out
there. That would be like a dream come true.
Thanks for taking the time to read this message.

Yours Truly,
Michael S. Laabs

Well not really. My parents are Alfred Harriet Laabs of Colby, Wi. About 8 years ago I discovered there is another Brian Laabs from Menomonie, Wi. We even share the same birthdate. I can not be sure he was born in Menomonie but he did attend college there. Our birth dates are 2-17-70.

thanks,
