Labossiere Family Association & Reunion
Hi all,
I am writing to you to let you know about the recent formation of La Famille LABOSSIERE Family Association. One hundred and twenty-four (124) years ago four (4) LABOSSIERE families came from Quebec (St-Ours) to Manitoba (St-Leon). A number of us thought it would be fitting to have a 125th anniversary of the Labossiere's "out west". A small committee was formed to organise the event. From the outset it was evident that our interest was very much more than just holding a family gathering - and thus the family association was "born". A 1st bulletin was published and is being circulated (please e-mail Lise Rondeau: mrondeau@mb.sympatico.ca to get your electronic copy). We are moving forward to organise a LABOSSIERE family gathering August 1st-4th, 2003 in St-Leon. We are encouraging all relatives from throughout North America (including US cousins and families whose LABOSSIERE name has changed to Claude or Glaude) to join us for this family gathering. We hope it is one of may more to follow. From the bulletin (that you will receive)you will see that we have very ambitious plans for the future (a foundation, a web site, an electronic genealogy, etc..).
A 2nd bulletin will be forthcoming in October. As well we hope to have our website operational by the end of October.
If any of you are interested in helping out - you are most welcome to do so. The contact names of the committee members are in the bulletin. Please provide Lise with contact information about yourselves and others that you would like communication sent to.
Many of you have done extensive genealogy work on LABOSSIERE branches or relatives - please let Lise know what you have and she can forward this to Gerald Rheault who is heading up committee responsible for the book/electronic genealogy or put you in touch with him if you prefer. I'm sure Gerald would be interested in whatever you may have. Please note that this committee is in the process of updating the 1960's genealogy that was developed by Father Claude-Laboissiere (a chaplain).
A few other items of interest:
1. A number of you know Father Gerald LABOSSIERE (a cousin) who is an Oblate here in St-Boniface (Winnipeg). Father LABOSSIERE is the "family historian" and has done extensive research on the Labossiere's over the past 30-40 years. All of this research and knowledge is being "funnelled" into the LABOSSIERE book/genealogy. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Father Gerald's ordination in St-Leon. We will be "doing something a little special" at the mass which will be held on the Sunday of the 125th anniversary.
2. You may be wondering why the capitalising of the name LABOSSIERE. Many Labossiere's spell the name with a small b, as I do; many others spell it with a large B (LABOSSIERE). The first issue the committee members had to deal with was "how do will we spell the name for the Association..small b or large B? A suggestion was made to capitalise the entire name for purposes of the association. Being good diplomats (as all Labossiere's are...) all committee members concurred with the suggestion and a 1st crisis was averted...
3. There has been some discussion about holding a 300th anniversary in 2018 in Quebec to mark the arrival in North America of our 1st ancestor Jean-Baptiste Laboissiere.
Please feel free to forward this e-mail or the bulletin to any others you believe might be interested in the Association or the family gathering next year.
