Re: Lackaye??

My name is John Bauer, a great-grandson of George E. Lackey, the brother of Clinton R. Lackey. I have George's notebook with an address for Mr. Dick Lackaye, 300 E 72nd St., Seattle, Washington (see attached photo). I thought it was strange that George would misspell "Lackey", but seeing Jack Martin's post about how Clinton R. Lackey changed his name to Richard Lackaye, it now makes sense. Judging from the adjacent entry in the notebook, the address was written about 1918. My understanding, however, is that the "R" in Clinton R. Lackey stands for Russell, and not Russum or Richard.

The three Lackey Brothers, Wm, Thomas and George....it has been proven through land grants that their father was George Lackey. The John William Lackey you speak of did have two sons carrying the same given names, but when you check their dates, they birth/death dates are not the same as the Alexander Co. Lackey brothers. According to the first family history book, put together by the family, the brothers came over on a cattle boat. It is thought, but not proven, that they landed in Baltimore. It has also been proven that the three brothers had a sister named Jane. All of this is documented and can be proven.

I will try to get to the courthouse in the next couple of weeks and check on the will. I believe that it has already been mentioned that Nancy is shown on the 1850 Talladega Co., census. The present probate judge in Talladega County also fits into this Lackey family through the Atkinson family line. He knows what records survived a turn-of-the century courthouse fire, and are still available for research. I'll let you know if I uncover anything.

We're not sure when the will was probated. If you could just check to see if the will is there, that would clear up many mysteries. As to Nancy Lackey, the death date has floated around for years and could possibly be from her gravestone. Hate to sound so vague, but this couple has been difficult to research, not being in AL. Anything you can find would be a great contribution.

I am a descendant of Amos and Nancy Lackey through their son Edley. I live in Talladega, AL and will be happy to go to the courthouse and see if I can find anything on Amos' will. I do hate to duplicate work though. Has anyone researched this already? You mentioned the will being written in Talladega Co. in 1843. Do you know if and when it was probated? I am also wondering where the death information on his wife came from. I will be happy to research anything on Amos and Nancy that might be found in Talladega Co. I just need suggestions. Am still a novice at this genealogy.

I am looking to connect my GGF Thomas C. Lackey b. 1850 d. 1922. I have located him in the 1900 Census in Militia District 1081, Paulding, Georgia. He is living with his wife Mary Jane b.1860 and sons James/John O.b.1899 and Edgar W./Walter E. b.1878. It is uncertain if Edgar has another mother due to the age. The census shows both Thomas's parents like himeself to have been born in S.C. I also found 1920 census shows my GF Fred L b.1900 but minus Mary J. in Norman Park, Georgia. Feel free to look at my public tree for any matchs.
Thanks,
Larry W. Lackey Sr.
To see the photos of Greenberry and Mary Lackey, go to your Ancestry.com homepage. Click on Family Trees and type in Greenberry Lackey for the name. Click on "public trees" and find the tree titled "My Family 2". Click on it and you can see all my photos of the Lackey family. I think you can save them to your computer and then put them on a disc. You can then take them to Walmart or some other place and have them printed.

UPDATE: New developments in my research on my paternal line Lackie/Lackey--My g-grandfather John Lackey (this is how his name was spelled on documents pertaining to him). As it turns out he was not born in New York as the census would have you believe--his siblings Samuel and "Fanny" were also not born in New York; not sure where they were born..maybe Ireland? Or maybe Scotland? "Fanny" was so young...could she have been born in England? or on the ship Atmosphere? I just know that the family sailed from Liverpool, England to America arriving in New York at Castlegarden (www.castlegarden.org) on October 10, 1863 aboard the ship 'Atmosphere'(New York Passenger List (1820-1957). Ellis Island did not exist at that time. The family consisted of father, James Lackey-age 23, mother Jane-age 30, Samuel-age 5, John-Age 4, and "Fanny" (Francis)-under 1 year old. Whether my Lackey family was part of the Lackey group who left Scotland and went to Ireland...I do not know at this time.

I think there are 2 Amos Lackey's being talked about here. I believe the 1843 date is from his will being written in 1843 in Talladega Co., AL, he died sometime after that. There is a Nancy Lackey, age 57, on the 1850 Census living in Talladega Co., AL, with a Keziah Lackey who is 16. Presumably Amos Lackey whom married Nancy Wasson, died sometime between 1843-1850.

Eliza's only child. I would have to see if I could find info on James. I am not too sure we have much. My cousin would have more info especially on the Lackey's. I am new to this ancestry thing and am just starting to gather info.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Irene

Has anyone ever gotten a copy of his death record giving any parental info? Or specific location of birth? If you can help me place him, I can give you much on his ancestry. Thanks.

Could you do a photo copy for me (photo paper) and I will re reimburse you for it and the postage?

How are you related to Greenberry? Do yo have any other photos of the Lackey family? I have some of his grand daughter Sarah Jo and her brothers and sisters if you are interested in having copies of them.

Mike
