I am looking for any information on the Lafayettes of Mississippi and Alabama. In particular, my g-g-grandfather was Charles Vinson Lafayette, died in Mississippi, but born in Alabama. I can't find any information on him as a child in the census records to let me know who his parents are. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

One of my ancestors was baptised with the middle name of Fiatt, probably after his grandmother whose maiden name was Fiatt. She came from St. Heliers. He later changed his middle name to Lafayette. Does anyone know if the Fiatt family name was originally Lafayette?
Celine,

My french is not very good (je ne parles francais). My ggf was James LaFayette - born about 1787. His father, John (or Jean possibly) was supposedly a cousin of the Marquis de LaFayette and born in France according to family history including a newspaper aticle about James written in the 1870's. However, it is also possible that he was born in Canada.

I'd be interested in the LaFayette information in your family

I have been told that somehow my grandmother's family is related to LaFayette. Since she immigrated to America from England in the late 1800's, and I have her ancesters at least back to her grandfathers....I have to assume the connection must be in a generation previous to the Marquis. Does anyone have any information on those ancestors?

Prior to that, my gggf was in Illinois back to the 1820's. Census data shows him being born in Vermont or Canada and his wife, my gggm was from Massachusetts. He was born in 1789 and she around 1802. I can't get any further back than that but am trying.

Found 1880 census for Jersey City, NJ for my great great grandparents, Nelson & Margaret Lafayette.
Nelson is now 54 years old, born in France (not Canada as the CT census record listed), and a machinist. Both his parents are listed as born in France.
His wife, Margaret (Tuite) is 53, born in NY, "k. house", with both parents' birthplace as Ireland.
The only children listed in this census record are:
Agnes (my great grandmother), 20 years old, born in CT
John, 17 years old, occupation: iron business; born in CT
Celia, 13 years old, "at school", born in CT

Also found 1920 Schenectady, NY, census with my great grandmother, Agnes. She is married to Robert Leishman. He is 55 years old, born in Calif., both parents born in Scotland and works for the railroad. Agnes is 52, born in CT with father (Nelson Lafayette) born in France and mother (Margaret Tuite) born in CT.

Their daugher, Jessie, and her husband, Roy Dawson (my grandparents), are also listed on this census record (which is what I was looking for and found my great grandparents on the line above them).

I've had difficulty finding Nelson's parents. I've learned, though, that George Washington Lafayette (son of "The General") had a couple of sons who did not have any sons; but I've also learned that George had illegitimate children, in particular sons. This may be where my line descends through, especially since my grandmother, Jessie Leishman Dawson, told us that we are descended from the Marquis.

My great great grandparents, Nelson and Margaret Tuite Lafayette had a son by the name of Francis/ Frank Lafayette, born about 1853 in Connecticut. They lived in New Hartford, CT in the 1850 census; Waterbury, CT in the 1870 census; and Jersey City, NJ in the 1880 census (where my grandmother was born). Since they were in north NJ in the late 1800s, I'm wondering if this is their son, Frank, buried in the cemetary you found in NE Penn.
Deb (drgallagher122@yahoo.com)
Re: Thomas LaFayette- b.Canada d. Muskegon, MI

Hi Tom,

My husband's great-grandmother was Mary Lafayette of Muskegon, Michigan. DOB 1/9/1839 Canada, father Thos. Lafayett, mother Margaret Palquett (based on death certificate)

Moved to US in 1840 (based on 1900 Census, Michigan, Muskegon County, Moorland Township)

Marriage 10/2/1860, husband William Butler, Muskegon, MI, age 18, bride Muskegon, MI, age 22. One witness was Olive Amuet (based on Marriage license Book 1, page 13)

Death certificate 10/10/1911 Muskegon County Record #1076

I have thought Mary may have been related to Dafayette because in some of the old papers is a prayer card about Adeline Dafayette's death. My husband's grandmother's middle name is Adeline.

I have information about Mary and William's children, etc. I would like information about Mary's siblings and ancesters. My email address is DBurnsReal@aol.com

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Nancy

I've finally found a CT Lafayette connection?

My great grandmother was Agnes Lafayette. She was born Aug. 22, 1866 in Waterbury, CT and died July 19, 1923 in Schenectady, NY.
I don't know her father's name; but her mother was Margaret Tuite, known as Peggy.

I'm going to check the Broderbund family tree that you suggested. I've also written down your email address.
In the meantime, my email address is tgallagher03@snet.net. Any info you have is welcome and appreciated.

African-Am Lafayette info

I just read a book entitled "Why Not, Lafayette?" by Jean Fritz (1999).

In this book the author mentions a black slave named Jim that had been "lent" to Lafayette during the Revolutionary War "to serve as a valet and groom" (p. 30).

The book says that Lafayette had given Jim a special assignment to pose as a black runaway slave, crossing into enemy territory to pick up whatever information he could and then report back to Lafayette.
The book goes on to say that Jim had done "such a good job that after the war, Lafayette persuaded Virginia to free him."
It adds that "Jim, who like most slaves, had no last name in English, adopted the name Lafayette which he used for life." (pp. 30-31)

Hopefully this helps you out somewhat.

Jim Lafayette

Carol--

I'm glad to help out. You may want to see if you can find the book by Jean Fritz, "Why Not, Lafayette?" I've read several books on Lafayette (I'm descended from him; and I'm proud of him for what he did for your ancester, Jim!!! And I'm proud that Jim took on the Lafayette name to pass on to his descendants, like you!!!) :o)
Anyway, the author has an extensive bibliography; maybe you can find out more about Jim through one of the listed books. She also credits Dr. Lloyd C. Kramer of the University of NC "for his careful and critical reading of [her] manuscript." Since the book was only written last year (1999), perhaps you could even get a hold of him. He may know where you could find information on Jim. One of the books in her bibliograph is "The Story of Fayetteville" by John Oates (Charlotte, NC: The Dowd Press, 1950). Maybe that might have more information on Jim too, you never know.

Good luck in your search!

I've also been told I'm decended from the general. I've read many books about him. The General, Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch-Gilbert du Motier married Marie Adrienne Francoise de Noailles on April 11, 1774. They actually had four children. Henriette, born Dec. 15, 1774 died when she was almost 2 years old; Anastasie was born July 1777?; George Washington was born Dec. 24, 1779?; and Virginie (named after the state of Virginia) was born Sept. 17, 1782.

George married Emilie Destutt de Tracy on June 7, 1802 (she was born 1785?). I've only been able to find information about one daughter. Her name was Clementine. In some research I've done, I found they had two daughters, born around 1808 and 1810. They must have had a son!!! But I've not been able to find that info yet.

Have just started researching my Inglehart line. I have an Archie Orlando Inglehart born 10 Nov 1874 in Saginaw, MI married Anna (Anna B or Annabelle) Lafayette on 29 June 1899 in Saginaw, MI. Archie's parents were Jasper C and Mary Branch Inglehart. According to the 1910 census the children of Archie and Anna are living in St. Vincents Orphan's Home. The children are listed as Norenna age 10, Evangeline age 7, Winifred age 6, Beatrice age 4 and Elmer age 3. Does anyone know what happened to these children and why they were in this home. I know that Evangeline married Glen Walker and she died in PA around 1933.
Your email bounced so I am posting here.

You may already have this information but if not….Your grandfather, Alcide, the oldest child, can be found in the 1920 census in Central Falls, Providence county, RI, ED 84, sh 10 A. li 26-32. His parents are George and Marie A. Lafayette, both born in Canada. I have been researching Alcide’s sister, Anita, who married into one of my families. Alcide’s parents moved to Pawtucket in the 1930 census (ED 2, sh 14A, li 2-8). Alcide is not with them (probably in NY) but your mother is listed with them as Dorothy T. In this census, her grandmother is listed as Anna M. Her maiden name was Anna Bouvier (from Anita’s death certificate). Both censuses will also give you approximate immigration dates for George and Anna.

Good luck!
