Oscar W. LaGrange

Oscar W. LaGrange on his WWI draft record gives his birthdate as 3 Aug 1882, and his nearest relative Anna LaGrange. He and Anna are found on census records in Everett, WA with two sons. In one census, his father, Chas. W. is with them.
Chas. W. and his wife Carrie have a family gravestone in Greenwood Terrace Cemetery in Spokane, WA, which has on it their names and the names of their children, as well as years of birth and death. Oscar's year of death, however, is missing the final digit. I asked at the office about this and was told that there is no record of Oscar being burried there.
I found a record of an Oscar W. LaGrange buried in Cypress Hill Memorial Gardens in Everett and was told by the office there that he was born 3 Aug 1883 and died 5 June 1957, and his wife's name is Cora. In fact, she is buried next to him.
I believe these two Oscars are one and the same and that Cora is his second wife. Can anyone confirm this for me, and perhaps tell me when Anna Rhode LaGrange died?

Hi Kathleen,
Jane Edgar Craig was the sister of my 3x great grandfather. Unfortunately, I have no idea of whether or not she had children, nor of what becam of her after the marriage. The only new information I've found since 2006 was from the original marriage register, where I discovered that Charles was a widower.
The Craigs and the LaGranges seem to have been closely connected to the Leneys, in both Bray and nearby Monkstown.

Hope this helps!
Donna

Hi, i am very interested to read your post from 2006. I am trying to find out about the family of Charles LaGrange born about 1772 who married Mary Turpin, born July 19 1780, in 1800. They lived outside Dublin in Bray and had a number of children. In aletter written by Mary La Grange's brother, Peter Turpin, to his sister Caroline Warren in 1843, he mentions the La Granges and speaks of their son saying that "his intended is in England and the Finlaysons (nb Susannah Finlayson was Susannah Turpin, another sister of Peter Turpin and Mary La Grange)are of the opinion that he will follow her and marry her there." I wonder was that Jane Edgar Craig?

If Jane Edgar Craig is your ancestor then surely she and Charles La Grange must have had children.

regards Kathleen

Hi, I am from the de Forest line. Based primarily on website searches, I have Crispin as being b. abt 1555-1565 in either Leiden, Zuid, Holland or Flanders (now Belgium) and marrying Agnes Mangelarus, b. 1564, Flanders. So far I have no more than that. I do have a lot more de Forest if you need it.

searching for parents of PAUL DE LA GRANGE

I'm trying to find the parents of Paul DE LA GRANGE born in France approx 1590. He went to Sweden in about 1611 and worked as the French instructor for king Karl IX daughters Katarina and Maria Elisabeth. He was a page of Gustaf II Adolf, served in the cavalry and by 1623 was working as a forester in Sweden. He was married to Karin LARSDOTTER approximately 1630, but I think he was married once before that because he has a son by the name of Aron DE LA GRANGE attributed to him who was born about 1625. I know nothing about his first wife. With his second wife, Karin, he had 8 or 9 children. (I am descended thru his oldest daughter). Paul died 12 Feb 1659.

He also went by the names: Paul DE LA GRANTIJ and Pavel JOHANSSON. For this reason I believe his father's name was Jean or a version of it (i.e., Johan, Johannes, John, etc).

I have found reference to his father as Jean DE LA GRANGE born about 1540, died about 1606. He is listed in at least one place as the "Count of Grammont." Jean's parents are alternately listed as: Germaine DE LA GRANGE and Antoine DE BILLY, Francois DE LA GRANGE and Anne DE DIGOINE, or Francois DE BILLY and Anne DE DIGOINE.

I believe this is the right family for Paul to belong to, I just need to find the appropriate link to make him fit. In at least one place Jean is presumed to have had multiple marriages, but there are no names for his wives, and no children listed for the first marriage. I suspect Paul may have been the product of that first marriage. I also need to pin down with accuracy Jean's parent's names.

If anyone can help me with this family, I would REALLY APPRECIATE the clarification!!!!

I am searching for information on Christian LaGrange (1819-1902) and his family. He married Mary Ann Houghtaling (1827-1913) probably in Albany County, New York. They had the following children; William (1844-?), Vanderzee (1847-1882), Eve (1848-1850), John (1849-?), Christian (1852-?), Garret (1857-?), Jacob (1859-?), Anna (1861-1929), Eveline (1865-?), and Catherine (1867-1953). The family appears to have lived mostly in Albany County and also spent some time in Columbia County, New York. Any information is appreciated.

Family of Isaac La Grange & Marytje Burgaart
HiFolks:

This is a update to a message that I posted elsewhere on this Board regarding the family of Isaac (de) La Grange & Marytje Burgaart. I have added information about this family that I found on this site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chasluke/surnames/

Following the information on the above site, I have made 1 change in the names of Isaac & Marytje La Grange's children:

I have changed the name of their daughter "Grietje La Grange", who married Johannes Luke, to "Geesje La Grange", because that is how she is known in Canadian records. Note that her granddaughter "Lucretia La Grange" was also called "Geesje" in LUKE records. "Geesje" seems to be a pet form of "Gesina". I'm beginning to suspect that "Grietje" may here represent the name "Lucretia", and that "Geesje" indicates that both women bore the two given names "Lucretia" & "Geesje". But of course there is no proof of that.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have posted a tentative synopsis of this family at:

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jhflann/IsaacDLG-Quebec.pdf

This is an updated reconstruction which connects it back to the immigrant OMIE DE LA GRANGE. I cannot quarantee the accuracy of the dates.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found the following "Lagrang" in the 1852 Census of St Armand East District 1:

Isaac Lagrang.......38.....Canada
Lucretia Lagrang....69.....USA....nee LUKE [also called "Geesje" in some sources]

Wife & son of Abraham (deceased by 1852). Is this the Isaac La Grange who married Anna Guthrie, who died shortly after their marriage (her funeral was on 5 Feb 1849)?

Mary Lagrang........23...Canada?

Who is she?

Jacob Lagrang.......42...Canada
Jemima Lagrang......34...USA
Mariet Lagrang......10...Canada
Abram Lagrang.......09...Canada

Salina* Lagrang.....37...Canada...[*= Paulina Reynolds]
Ome* Lagrang........37...Canada...[*= Omie La Grange]
Mary Lagrang........12...Canada
Pallina Lagrang.....08...Canada
Harriet Lagrang.....06...Canada
Miles Lagrang.......02...Canada

These folks are all Epicopalians.

Can anyone tell me how these folks are related?

Isaac La Grange signed an Oath of Allegiance at Missisquoi Bay in 1795.

Halsey

Hi Rae: It has been a long time. I lost most of my genealogy files in December, and all my saved documents and saved emails that contained genealogical data. I also lost my Windows Address Book. Fortunately, I had placed .pdf copies on my web site of the most valuable "family files", from which I can manually rebuild my FTM files. So my LaGrange is recoverable. Still, I lost of lot of important data on my Mersereau, Halsey, McKay, and Drehmer ancestry, and it be quite awhile before I will be able to rebuild those files.

Yes, I am quite interested in what you have found. The Mersereau and LaGrange families have very interesting histories. Some of the stuff I've seen online about the immigrant LaGranges is basically later-day family folklore (from the early 1800s) and not very reliable. You can snail mail me at:

John Halsey Flannery
2401 NE Blakeley St.
Apt 108
Seattle, WA 98105

jhflann@drizzle.com
do you have any other surnames associated with your LaGrange's from New York? My great great grandfather's middle name was LaGrange and lived in Madison County, NY, he was born in 1847. His younger brother was born in 1850 and moved from Chittenango, NY (Madison County) to Michigan (I think it was St. John's area). Their older half-sister also moved there. I am trying to connect the LaGrange middle name to their mother Lavinia M. Louer who married Adrian V. Boardman. She was born in 1816 and died in 1853. I have a lot of info on the Boardman side, but can't find anything concrete on Lavinia's side. I think LaGrange must be a family name from her side. Please let me know if you have any ideas. thank you so much.

Hello everyone,
I've just discovered that my ancestor Jane Edgar CRAIG married Charles LaGRANGE in June 1844 in London. At the time, Charles was from Riversdale, County Wicklow, Ireland. I suspect that they may have gone to live near Bray, south of Dublin.
I'm hoping to find out whether or not they had children.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Donna
(in the Netherlands)

LaGranges in Gibson County Indiana, mid-1800s

My ggg-grandfather was John LaGrange (Legrange), b. abt. 1809 in Kentucky. He and his family lived in Gibson County Indiana. He shows up in 1850. There are a bunch of Legranges in Gibson county, and I believe they're brothers: Aaron (b. 1801), William (b. 1810), Richard (b. 1813).

Can someone confirm this? Also, I'm trying to find John's parents. I find Legranges in Kentucky in the early 1800s, but they ended up in Johnson county Indiana, not Gibson.

Debbi

I know this is an old posting, but I hope some of you are still around so I can bounce this off of you.

I am related through Aaron LaGRANGE (1770 – 1857 according to his stone). I find records of him in Somerset County, NJ; Mercer and Nelson Counties, KY; and Gibson County, IN.

It appears that Aaron is the son of Aaron "Arie" Molenaer LaGRANGE and his probable wife, Charity (Unknown). I believe that Antje (LaGRANGE) VANDERVEER may be the daughter of Arie and Charity as well.

I'm making these assumptions because:

-Arie was baptized in 1747/48 at Raritan. His older children may have been born around 1765. That would put Antje's age closer to Peter VANDERVEER's

-Charity remarried to John VERBRYCK in 1799 in Mercer County, KY, so Arie must have died by then. Aaron was the executor of John's will (probated in 1815). Antje wasn't named, but John's stepson, Peter LEGRANGE was.

-I've seen sources that list Peter and Antje VANDERVEER's children as:
Cyntha
Peter
Charity
John
Elizabeth
Aaron
James
Isaac

-The names resemble the names of the children of Aaron and Anne (VANARSDALL?) LaGRANGE. (I'm not positive of the order, birth dates were determined from census records.)
Peter
Charity
Aaron
Anne
John
William
Elizabeth
Richard
Mary

Does anyone know much about Arie or Charity? Are my assumptions reasonable (or perhaps old news or even wishful thinking)?

Debbi

I think I've talked with your before re Albert. Albert was my most infuriating dead end. I was born a LaGrange, but of all the branches I've been following, I got stuck early-on on the LaGrange one.

I found Albert as Albert LeGrange on the 1860 census as the son of John and Nancy LeGrange in Patoka, Gibson, Indiana. So, now my dead end is one generation further along! It looks like there's quite a few LeGranges in the area, but I don't know how they all fit together.

The Amanda Albert married was Amanda Skelton. There's lots of Skelton stuff to search through!

John: It's been a while since we have exchanged Emails. I have an interesting story about Joshua Mersereau b 1728 who became Deputy Commissary General of Prisoners, as you know. I have extracted letters from George Washington Papers at the Library of Congress, showing how the Mersereau's got into Intelligence. I have tracked where Intelligence meetings were held. How payments from GW were made. The meetings involved John LaGrange at his home in Elizabethtown.I have documented proof they occurred. All of this could be sent snail mail.I feel this makes John a Patriot. Interested?
Rae

John: Just a quick note to say I am still working on the project you gave me. I will let you know when it is mailed.
Question: John laGrange d 1798 and Elizabeth Mersereau d 1816 lived in Elizabethtown NJ, before they became neighbours to Joshua Mersereau b 1728 in Vestal. Do you know what John LaGrange's occupation was in Elizabethtown?
Further Info: Source:Lincklaen Travels...1791-2.
"At six miles from Chenango, on the Susquehanna River, we stopped at the house of Mr Joshua Mersereau, a staten Island Huguenot, who had been one of Washington's ablest intelligence agents, and later a high ranking army officer, before moving to this region in 1789. He served as first Judge of Common Pleas and Surrogate of both Tioga and Chemung Counties. The father was not home, but the son received us with politeness. The father bought, last spring from Judge Wilson, 300 acres of land which he expects to improve. He has already built two barns, and will commence to build a comfortable wooden home, next spring, where he expects to live out his days."
Joshua Mersereau b 1728 died in Union. It is said he moved across the River from Vestal, to build his last wooden home.
Local history has it that John LaGrange and Elizabeth moved to be neighbours of Joshua Mersereau, their brother-in-law.In the mid 1800's their property was known as the Phelps Estate.John "was unacquanted with wooded country and in particular, farming. He had frequent irritations from want of more experience. He wished he had stated where the elements were at less variance, to his knowledge and experience."
Rae
After all the hard work you put into your genealogy files, I can only imagine how you felt. It will be easy for me to send my Mersereau file ( sorry it will be via post)...that way if I go thro the same experience, all I need to do is contact you.
It will take some time to collect "source material" ie GW letters, for The John LaGrange file, I thought would be of interest to you. Now that I have your address, I will get started, and send everything at once.
Spring has finally arrived and the garden, staining the house, puts a crimp into genealogy.
