Hi Helen,

I've got another line of the Laidlaw's and am desperately trying to find the connection to Daniel - we first learnt about him nearly 25 years ago when my sister's history teacher showed her a photo of Daniel - and he looks just like my father, in a kilt, but with a slightly more coiffed moustache!

There is no doubt in my mind that there is a direct connection, and I think it could go back as far as 1770 to a David Laidlaw (Laidley) my great x4 grandfather who was a cattle drover, and turned up in Sanquhar . My theory is that he drove cattle from Chirnside, at the opposite end of the southern upland way, which ties in with Little Swinton - the birthplace of Daniel. It would be great if you could get in contact.

Suzanne Laidlaw.

I'm trying to identify a man named Laidlaw who, with Jacob Flowers, in 1872, helped to organize a group of settlers from Wyandotte, KS, for a move to Greeley, CO, purportedly to join the "Union Colony" and settle there.

He listed as a cousin age 21 at the time. I may have information that can help you and would love to hear more from you.
Best Regards
Peg

I had seen that change in my research but cannot find that any of my Laidlaws changed their name. From my research my Laidlaws came from Berwick-Upon- Tweed (near the Tweed river) just across from England. I have been told that at one time their was a castle by the name of Laidlawstiel from which the "Laidlaw" name was derived.
The Laidlaws that came from Scotland in my branch stopped in Nova Scotia for a while and then some (my grandfather) went to Candada born in Blenheim Ontario, Canada. I started researching back as a middle schoool project and have been doing it on and off since then.

The one I have belonged to Mary, daughter of James Rowand and Helen Lunn.
Center of tree just to the right.
Her name was Mary Elizabeth Ada Rowand and she never married. Her brother Clarence, was my grandfather.
I know there's more in the Walkerton, Ontario area. Her parents were James Rowand & Margaret Ellen Lund (corrected version)

I have updated our small part, but it is more of a small bush than a tree.

The tree is a work of art and I might have my copy framed.
Do you know how many original copied were made?
Linda

James Laidlaw - born USA? Hannah was his wife? Ancestry has the Census. What you do you think your James Laidlaw was born? US Census before 1850 wasn't too clear as how to post the person and his family. After 1850, they list the wife and children with approximate ages at the time of the census. Not until 1900 did they list the year and only that census. There is no 1890 census as that census was destroyed after being flooded.
1804 would have listed, Laidlaw, James and then listed ages of children and adults first makes and then females James age would be sort of listed in a 5 or 10 year bracket. If his father were somehow listed his age bracket would be to the right of James. Then the females start but no names. The ages would be listed as the men's ages were. If James was married, only the age bracket would indicate that he was. His living mother would have been in an older bracket, like his living father would have been.

About your ggguncle Daniel Logan Laidlaw Battle of Loos WWI

If he was a piper at the time he was from Scotland. The Laidlaw name was originally a Border Scot West March name. Does the VC after his name mean he won the Victoria Cross? That is a very high honor. There are two memorials to men who died in various wars. One is in Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland.

My Laidlaw was from Ayeshire and immigrated to Philadelphia and was a carriage maker there. When he went to what is now Charleston, WV, it was before the American Civil War when Charleston, VA separated itself from Virginia in 1863. He was probably a Presbyterian.
My Laidlaw, changed his name to Laidley probably before he left Pennsylvania. Look up the history of Charleston, WV and its cemetery.
James and Hannah Laidlaw

Researchers beware as there are several James Laidlaws in the records, born around 1801. One was born in Dumfries-shire and seems to have been a vicar, married to Hannah Gilmartin??? and the other was born in Roxburghshire and married Hannah Aloes from Cheshire in Sunderland in 1819. He seems to have been a carpenter. There are public trees which mix these people up, and some which have the wrong James (I believe) going to Canada.

Does anybody have the birth, marriage and death certs which would match these people up accurately please? I'm about to look for birth certs and will post the non-vicar one to my tree when I find it.

Hello - Sometime or another, shortly? after the first of the Laidlaws left Scotland for America, some of them, my family included, changed their name from Laidlaw to Laidley. Have you any in your tree that made that change? I had no idea of that until I began putting together my whole genealogy. There are some 5 main families in the mix and a whole mass of other surnames, of which I have noted who married who, but not much more. The first surname is of Protestant Swiss background, finally settled as Ruffner Peter Ruffner arrived about 1732, lived for a while in Pennsylvania, married a Steinman (Stoneman) and moved to what is now Page County, VA. Most of the sons married women of the same type. One of Peter's grandsons married a Hugeunot, last name Marye. Another married a Daughter of Jost Hite. By then people were allowed to move westward. Peter's eldest son, Joseph moved to what is now Charleston, WV and in a few generations married a Laidley of what is now Wheeling, WV.
I would like very much to hear from you if you have any Laidlaws who changed their name to Laidley, just for curiosity sake. There must have been a reason for name respelling. Regards, Sally in Virginia

I am descended from William Laidlaw born abt 1846 in Hawick (family tradition) or Dumfries (on his marriage cert.) who married Agnes Ferguson at Melbourne Australia on 20 Oct 1870. His parents were William Laidlaw and Jane Newall. He seems to be different from the ones on many family trees born in 1846.

Any connections please, however remote?

I'm wondering how many Laidlaw researchers have this tree? I have been trying to up date it. BIG IDEA! I updated my little corner in 1982 and it was as large a tree as the main tree. Who else has added to their line?
Marilyn

I continue to search for family information on my great-grandfather Neil McCall, b. 1860, who immigrated from Scotland with John McCallum. I believe his mother's name was Elizabeth and that she re-married after Neil's father died. Neil and John were engineering(?) contractors and they built a number of the civic sandstone buildings in cities like Calgary, AB and Vancouver, BC. Neil died in 1894 in an industrial accident in Vancouver. He lived for a time in the state of Washington.
Any information or suggestions most appreciated. vf

I am researching the Laidlaw family's Scottish roots. My interest is primarily in Alexander Robert Laidlaw, b. 1875 in Upper Canada. It appears that his mother, Charlotte J S Aird Laidlaw immigrated from Scotland in 1868. It also appears that his father, John Laidlaw, b. appt 1840? was married previously. Children of issue were John 1859, and Susan 1863. Charlotte also appears to have married someone surname ROSS, and the children of issue there were Daniel, Agnes and Maggie, no dob. The children of the Laidlaw union were Jessie, Charlotte, Alexander and William D.
Any information or suggestions would be most appreciated. vf

James LAIDLAW - Kansas City, KS - July 1880

"The Kansas City Daily Times" (Missouri) Monday, July 5, 1880

FELL DOWN A CELLAR.

Quite a serious accident befell the young child of
James LAIDLAW of the Kansas Pacific shops,
Armstrong, on Saturday evening. She was playing
with some other children in front of the family
residence, and not noticing the cellar door being
open plunged headlong down the opening into the
basement, a distance of some eight feet.

The way she fell caused many who saw the accident
to think the child had met with instant death, and
although brought out of the cellar in an insensible
condition, it was found on examination that no bones
were broken, but she was terribly bruised up. Her
escape from almost instant death seems marvelous.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo10
I just came across your post. I am doing research for my husband's Laidlaw family and am trying to put all the threads together. He is decended from Thomas Laidlaw b. 1829 in Delaware County New York, son of William and Isabella (Liddle) Laidlaw, son of Thomas Laidlaw and Margaret (Stewart) Laidlaw. Before I head to Scotland to trace the line down I was trying to see where all the children of William and Isabella went. Where did Stewart go after the 1880 census? I haven't been able to trace him from that time. Thanks for any help, Barbara Laidlaw
PS Were you able to get any ancestors from your query?
