I have photos of Robert and "Auntie" Laing or Lang when they were visiting in PA from Rosebud Texas taken in 1925. I do not know Auntie's first name but I know she had a sister Bertha Seckinger Wille that she was visiting. I understand that they spoke almost entirely in German. Would like help in making the connections as Bertha came from Germany in 1881.

We are following William and Euphemia Helen (Grierson) Laing who immegrated to Canada July 10, 1848 via New York. They settled in Puslinch Township, Wellington County. We have 9 children listed with fairly extensive information on one - William Junior m Julia Ingle. Other children are listed as Robert, Andrew, Walter, Charles, Margaret, Euphemia, Elizabeth, Isabella. We have very little info on these and would welcome any assistance with birthdates, marriages, etc.

Laing/Lang Families

I have been researching my Laing/Lang Family for several years. The first members in this family I can definitely connect to mine are five orphans in the 1807 Gerogia Land Lottery. (David, James, Robert, Cornelius and Charles) The Lottery was out of Richmond County for the Baldwin and Wilkerson Counties. I have other members that are older, but can not be sure if these are older brothers of uncles. I was told, this family came from Scotland around 1760(?) through the Carolinas, but can not find proof.

The Laings from the New Jersey and New York areas have some of the same given names.

I have traced these five and a couple others, William H. and Harris down to Tattnall,Richmond and Liberty Counties of Georgia. Two of them settled in Liberty Co. ( James and Robert) the other three moved on down to Gadsden County, Florida between 1821-1830.

Some of this family settled in Terrell and Randolph Counties.

My direct line is Cornelius b. abt 1798 d. abt 1849, married Rachael Scarborough b. abt 1800. First record of them is the Screven Co. census.

If anyone is interest in any of the info I have collected or would be willing to share any information, please contact me at NMYLB@aol.com

Laings from Sunderland

Hello everyone, my grandmother's sister Margaret Coombs married Ralph Laing 1898 Sunderland. They were listed in the 1901 census at 47 Northumberland? I know that two of their children were Annie May and Ralph Watson. I notice that several people have asked about a Hall Laing in Sunderland. There was a Hall Laing (age56) in the household as a boarder at the time. It seems that just about everyone worked in the shipyards back then.Any connections? Yours truly, Tom Stevenson

Laing Family Research

A number of us have formed a genealogical research site at MyFmaily.com. Those of you familiar with this service will know that MyFamily provides GEDCOM support and on line real time networking. We welcome all Laings of Scottish origin or descent.

We have recently recovered the Laing family tartan and are in the process of having it registered. The pattern (sett) for this tartan was brought with immigrants subsequent to the Jacobite rebellion in Scotland when the English defeated the Scottish at the battle of Culoden. Afterwards, the wearing of tartans was outlawed for a considerable period. Many Laings died in the rebellion, some few survived to be tried for rebellion and deported as conscripted labor. Yet others voluntarily left Scotland for the new world where they continued to weave the tartan for almost 100 years. We hope to soon have the tartan officially registered and made available from a recognized weaver.

Contact Laings@usa.net to joing the Laing family genealogical network.

Arthur E. Laing, b1867, Stockton, England, emigrated to US around 1916

Hi. I am new to this site and am hoping that somebody out there can help me to continue my search for my ggrandfather, Arthur Edwin Laing. He was born in 1867 in Stockton, England, married Agnes McCall in 1896 in Stockton. Arthur "skipped town" around 1916 and is believed to have emigrated to the USA... we do not know which state. He was a Civil Engineer and a Marine Engineer. I have checked passenger lists for Ellis Island but have had no luck in locating him...

If anyone has a similar family history, or if the name rings any bells, or if anyone has passenger lists for other ports, or if anyone knows if there are Marine Engineer listings.... PLEASE contact me!! Many thanks!

Carole Duff (Canada)

I am trying to find the parents of my ancestor John Cleghorn b. abt.1769 possibly in Roxburghshire Scotland and married June 14, 1799 in Ettrick, Selkirk, Scotland to Isabel Oliver b. abt. 1777. I found an entry in the IGI for a Thomas Cleghorn married on July 24, 1768 in Yarrow, Selkirk, Scotland to Betty Laing. Does anybody have this couple in their family tree and did they have a son John married to an Isabel Oliver. Hope someone can break down this brick wall for me. Thanks.

Laing - biography research

Hi everyone,

I'm currently writing a biography of former British and European welterweight boxing champion Kirkland Laing, and am trying to put together a family tree.

Kirk was born in Jamaica on 20 June 1954. My research indicates he is the father of Angelo Kyle J. Laing, listed on this site as born Jan 1994. He also has a number of brothers, including Tony Laing (born in Jamaica on 22 September 1957), and possibly Peter Laing and Joe Laing as well. He was living with a "Linda", who may be the Linda Margaret Laing listed as born on 29 June 1955 who died in October 2004 in Nottingham.

I'm sure that Kirk had at least two more children, and that his parents would have died in the UK, having emigrated here from Jamaica. Can anyone shed any light on this, to help me get started?

Finally, just a word more about the book. It's a not-for-profit venture which I am funding personally myself. If I break even, profits will go to the Midlands Ex-Boxers Association (of which I am a member) to assist with their work in the Midlands community (such as helping former fighters who have fallen on hard times). A large number of former fighters and others from the boxing industry have already contributed to the book, which is scheduled for publication at the end of 2007. Any questions, just let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give!

Kind regards,

Oliver

William Gary Laing, born 1886 in Scotland

I am looking for any information or suggestions that will help me find information about William Gary Laing, he was born in Scotland in 1886. He immigrated to Canada in 1910. He then married Ellen Crozier in New Carlisle Quebec. My family thinks he was from the Edinburgh area? We know he had a sister Mary who stayed in Scotland, also faint memories think he had a brother who immigrated to the USA. He traveled back to Scotland to visit his family at least once after 1920.

I know that isn't a lot to work with but if anyone can help I would be grateful. Thanks Matt
They had no children but a Robert A. Laing, Prince Albert, Sask., is recorded in his obituary as being his nephew [perhaps a son of Alexander?]
I have tried other boards with no success but one of these days I may be lucky!
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Laing from Scotland to Canada

Trying to learn more about my ggg-grandparents, James and Christina Laing. Do not know her maiden name. Their daughter, Louisa Mae Laing was my gg-grandmother who was born in Ontario and married John Coleman Kalleen in Burlington Canada, in 1875. Census reports indicate the Laings were from Scotland. Marriage cert. says Louisa was born in Willington Square in Burlington. Have reason to believe she was adopted, but remained very close to her Laing family. Many of her family vacations were spent in Canada with this family. Would love to learn more about them. I have talked with many family members and noone knows of any other siblings.
Hope someone recognizes them and can answer my questions.

Mary

Rev. & Mrs. E. W. (Emma J.) LAING family - Kansas City, KS - March 1907

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, March 11, 1907

MEASLES KILL TWO IN A FAMILY.

Two children of Mrs. Emma J. LAING, a widow living at
209 May street, Chelsea place, have died of measles
within the last four days and another is dangerously sick.
Mrs. LAING, who is the widow of the Rev. E. W. LAING,
a Congregational minister, has lived in Chelsea place five
years. Her husband died last June, leaving six children,
ranging in ages from 14 years to 6 months. The children
attend the Chelsea school.

Two weeks ago one of the older children was taken sick
with measles. In a few days all of the children had
contracted the disease. Thursday, Ewart, 9 years old,
died. The funeral was to have been held at 2 o'clock
yesterday afternoon, but Manly, 4 years old, was so sick
that it was decided to postpone the services. At 3 o'clock
yesterday afternoon he died. Gertrude, the baby, was
dangerously sick last night but the attending physicians
thought there was a chance for her recovery. The three
other children, two boys and a girl, are out of danger.

The funeral of the two children will be held from the home
of their mother Tuesday afternoon. They will be buried in
one grave in Quindaro cemetery.

In the last thirty days, 210 cases of measles have been
reported to the West Side board of health, but only one
other death has resulted.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo5
She was alive in 1704-05, but birthdate or date of death is not known.
I am looking for any info that ties her to the Laing ancestry, and possibly her husband's (maybe through his I can find a link to ours).
Thanks for any help you may give.

I have been able to find out quite a lot about the Binneys but absolutely nothing about the Laings. John Laing died in London about 1846 and most of his family ended up in New Zealand. Jane's father was Edward Binney who married Elizabeth Bowey in 1812 in Jarrow, Durham.

I am looking for any information on George Laing born April 14,1828 (this is according to his Obit - therefore is only as good as the informants knowledge) in Aberdeen, Scotland. He immigrated to Michigan in 1858 and married Amelia Elizabeth Newman, but left behind a sister Mary whom he kept in close contact with. and possible a brother Alexander as mentioned in one of the letters from his sister. I also believe by an inheiratance that an Andrew Cruden who named George's son in his testement could help be some link to the information I am seeking. At the time of George's death 05/1888 his mother, a sister (Mary) and a brother were still alive in Scotland.

He married Helen Collier (b. 1834) of Aberdeen in 1853 in New York.

Siblings who survived childhood: Helen (b. 1824), George (b. 1825) and Mary Ann (b. 1926). Grandparents were George Laing and Margaret Watson.

If you have any information, please post it here or email me at emlaing@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Emily

Laings from Aberdeen, Scotland

William Sabor Laing was born in Aberdeen, Scotland circa 1828. He came to the U.S. and settled in Aroostook County, Maine. He was a substitue in the Civil War in 1865. He married at least twice. His first wife was Hannah Hemore who he married in the 1850's and they had eleven children. His second wife was Martha Mills and together they had five children (my grandfather included). I need to know who William Sabor Laing's parents are and if he had any siblings and any other genealogy that might be available. I need the same for Martha Mills. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me direct at chris @americancolorlabs.com
Thank you
Chris
James C.W. Laing and Mary Pirrie

My gg grandfather was James C.W. (Charles William) Laing from Aberdeen, born 1854. He was married to Mary Pirrie born 1856. They emigrated to the US in 1888 (James and son William) and 1890 (Mary and rest of family) and settled in Westerly, RI where they remained until they died. I cannot find any info on their lives and families in Scotland. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.
