I believe he is the son of James and Catharine Laird who appear on the 1830 Census in Rankin County Mississippi.
Catherine appears in the 1860 Rankin County Census with her daughter Mary Myers and granchildren. No proof just a hunch. Many of Robert Laird sons moved to Mississippi from Georgia and I beileve that James is one of them.

Spencer Laird

Hey Nancy,
Didin't I email you a couple of years ago? Anyway I am working on David's parents. My cousin is coming to visit in a couple of weeks and bringing some new stuff. The Brookhaven, miss. library has a few listings in Bible records including Hattie Rainwater. I hope to get back over there one day to research some more. You know that my great uncle Matt Leard who was Julius Laird's brother lived in Oklahoma and later moved to Spring Texas. His sons were Roy, Frank and M.L. Leard. They are all buried in Houston, Texas at Resthaven on I-59 north. One of the Julius Laird brothers lived in Oklahoma and had 7 children then divorced and moved to Mississippi and married again. They then had 7 children and named them the same as the other 7. So came an uncle Matt and aunt Matt and so on. Julius was my grandfather and his wife Mamie (Nannie) Smith came from Choctaw background also. They were married Feb. 5 1905 in Lincoln Co. Miss. Julius died in 1966 and Mamie in 1969 and are both buried in the Laird family plot in Brookhaven.
Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird in late-1700s, early 1800s New York

I would appreciate hearing from anyone researching or who has researched the Leard/Lard/Laird family in New York state in the late-1700s and early 1800s. In a 1980s genealogical query a now-deceased researcher indicated that a Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird moved to Randolph Co. IL from NY in the early 1800s with his son, Isaac and daughter, Mary Ann. I am trying to rule out this potential Samuel from being connected to Margaret Leard who married James H. McDonough in Randolph Co. IL in 1817. I have a SC church record that says she’s connected to the Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird families in Abbeville Co./District SC, but I cannot find a definitive connection to those Leards since there are other Leard/Lard/Laird families in the records, i.e., too many Leards + too few records = much confusion. Rather than proving a connection, I am trying to disapprove other potential connections (other Leard/Lard/Laird families). ANY information about a NY Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird would be very much appreciated.

Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird in late-1700s, early 1800s Laurens (NOT Abbeville) County/District, South Carolina

I would appreciate learning all I can about Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird of late-1700s, early 1800s in Laurens (NOT Abbeville) County/District South Carolina. I have a lot of info regarding the Abbeville Samuel Leards and family. I’m trying to definitively connect Margaret Leard, apparent daughter of an Abbeville Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird, who married James H. McDonough in 1817 in Randolph Co. IL to the latter Samuels. I hope to rule out the Laurens Co. Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird. I have a SC church record that says Margaret is connected to the Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird families in Abbeville Co./District SC, but I cannot find a definitive connection to those Leards since there are other Leard/Lard/Laird families in the records, i.e., too many Leards + too few records = much confusion. Thus, rather than proving a connection to the Abbeville Samuel Leards, I am trying to disapprove other potential connections (other Leard/Lard/Laird families). ANY help, any information regarding the Laurens Co. Samuel Leard/Lard/Laird (or a John [1790 SC census] and a Mary [1800 SC census], too) would be very much appreciated.

My ggrandmother was Addie E. Laird born in Mississippi abt 9/1870. She had a son named Epps Golson or(Gholson). I don't know if there was a marriage or if Addie divorced the senior Mr. Golson. He abandonded her and the child. She then married my ggrandfather Franklin Wolford they had three daughters and one son who died as a child. The daughters were Violet, Vera (my grandmother), and Vada. The sonwas named Quincy. All three daughters married Anderson men. Vera & Vada married brothers and Violet married the cousin of the two Anderson brothers. Epps Golson followed in his father's footsteps and left his wife and sons, never to be seen again. Addie's Husband Frank Wolford was robbed and killed at the Farmer's Market in Dallas Texas in 1908. Addie later married Mr. David Conine and remained his wife until her death.
If you have any information about Jacob Laird's history or his wife,Matilda please contact me at nja_baker@netzero.com
I would also appreciate knowing the source of your information.
Thank you

Hi all,
I'm trying to find the family of Glenn G. Taylor. He was born around 1916 in KY assumably to Thelma C. Laird and Garrison Taylor. My family has a bible where Garrison and Thelma's wedding date is listed at 1918, two years after the birth of Glenn. The surviving members of the Taylor family didn't know about Glenn until I discovered him in a census a month ago. He moved with his uncle Harry R. Laird to Washington state by 1930, five years after the untimely death of his mother, and six years after the untimely death of his father. I have a photo that I would really like to get to the family, and would love info on his extended family. Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.

Samuel and Elizabeth Laird of PA, Family PA-IL-NE, an Rev Joseph Montgomery

Printed in 1879 at Harrisburg, PA,, A Sketch of the Life of the Rev. Joseph Montgomery mentioned a bible said to have belonged to the Rev Joseph which passed through the Laird family who occupied the Rev Joseph Montgomery's house in Harrisburg after his death and kept his possessions. As of the writing, late 1870s, one T C Laird of Nebraska was owner. The date of Joseph's birth and the fact that his parents John and Martha originally from Ireland are said to have comes from this bible.

(Rev) Joseph Montgomery [23 Sept 1733-14 Oct 1794]. Presbyterian minister and delegate to the Continental Congress from PA. M1: Elizabeth REED or REID [d: March 1769]; m2: 11 July 1770 Rachel (RUSH) (BOYCE), widow. Elizabeth [ca: 1669/1770-12 Oct 1814, aged 44] m: Samuel LAIRD [b: 15th Feb 1769], if I understand, was a daughter of the first wife Elizabeth who died in March 1769, which would have made Elizabeth junior at least 45 when she died. Her step-mother's brother Benjamin Rush signed the Declaration of Independence. In his later years, Joseph made his home with his daughter, Elizabeth Montgomery Laird, and her family in Harrisburg, PA. When Joseph died in Harrisburg on 14 Oct 1794, he was buried in their family plot in the Lutheran Church Cemetery.

"Samuel Laird, Esq., d. at Carlisle Sept. 27, 1806." Wm H Egle, Deaths of Prominent Persons Eighty Years Ago. Pennsylvania Vital Records, Vol II. He may have been the father of the next.

LAIRD, SAMUEL, the son of Samuel Laird, was born at Carlisle Penn'a, on the 15th of February, 1769. His father was for many years one of the Provincial magistrates of Cumberland county, and, under the Constitution of 1776, one of the justices of the courts. Mr. Laird received a classical education, studied law at Carlisle, and was admitted to the Dauphin county bar at the September term, 1792. He located at Harrisburg, and soon secured a large and successful practice. In the early years of the borough he took an active part in its local affairs, and was a prominent actor in the first decade of its history. He died at Harrisburg, January 15, 1815, aged forty-five years. He married Elizabeth Montgomery, second daughter of Rev. Joseph Montgomery, who died October 12, 1814, aged forty-four. Their remains lie interred in the Harrisburg cemetery. Mr. Laird was a good lawyer, a pleasant speaker, and a courteous, honorable gentleman of the old school. [W H Egle Notes and Queries. First and Second Series Volume I, LXII BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF DAUPHIN COUNTY—IV. Page 358-359]

Samuel Laird, a lawyer of prominence, admitted to the Dauphin county bar in 1792, and for many years a leading actor in the affairs of the county. He and Col. Forster married sisters, daughters of the Rev. Joseph Montgomery. Mr. Laird died in 1815, at the age of forty-four. (W H Egle Notes and Queries. First and Second Series Volume II page 450.)

1796, April 22: In this town [Harrisburg], on Friday, April 22, 1796, by Rev. Snowden, Samuel Laird, Attorney-at-law, and Miss Betsy Montgomery, daughter of the late Joseph Montgomery, Esq., of this place. [Wm H Egle, Notes and Queries, First and Second Series, Volume I, Page 194 Dauphin County Marriages Eighty Years Ago.—II LAIRD—M0NTG0MERY.]

Tracking down "T C Laird", this seems plausible.

In 1850, listed at Town of Buckeye, Stephenson Co, IL, were Samuel Laird 42; Elizabeth 36; Mary 12; Robert 3; Thomas 10; and William 8. All were born Pa.

In 1860, listed at Town of Buckeye, Cedarville post office area, Stephenson Co, IL, were Samuel Laird 52 Pa; Elizabeth 45 Pa; Henry 22 Pa; Thos 19 Pa; William 15 Pa; R 13 Pa male; J 10 Ill male; and P 7 Ill male.

In 1870, Thomas Laird 30; Mary 32; Wm 26; Robert 23; James 19; and Paschal 16, all listed as born in Pa, were in the Lena, IL, post ofice area, in Dakota Twp, Stephenson Co, IL.

The 1880 census of Oak Creek, Webster Co, Nebraska shows Thomas Laird 39 self and both parents b: Penn; Mary E Laird 31 b: Ills both parents b: Penn (wife); Lee D Laird 2 (son) b: Nebraska father born Penn mother b: Ills; Elisabeth Leetsch 18 (servant); James Laird 29 b: Ills, both parents b: Penn (boarder); Pasckal Laird 25 b: Ills, both parents b: Penn (boarder).

The next entry if for William Laird 35 self and both parents b: Penn; Margret A Laird 36 b: Ills father b: Penn mother b: Ireland (wife); Bessie M Laird 6 b: Nebraska father b: Penn mother b: Ills (daughter); Laura M Laird 5 b: Nebraska father b: Penn mother b: Ills (daughter); Paul Laird 3 b: Nebraska father b: Penn mother b: Ills (son); Lewis Laird 1 b: Nebraska father b: Penn mother b: Ills (son); Mary Murdaugh 25 (boarder); Robert Laird 38 (boarder) self and both parents b: Penn.

So, does anyone have more info, especially as to the current status of the Joseph Montgomery bible?

Don Maring
familydog@comcast.net

I have three Hardin Great Grand Aunts that married three Laird brothers. This makes identifying old photos labeled just "The Lairds" quite difficult to place. I have recently come into the possession of two big shoe boxes of old photos like this. I am scanning and uploading them as I can. I have the first 21 up. I would really appreciate it if all you Lairds descended from William Pressley Laird and Mary Jane Belt could take a look and let me know if you recognize these people.

The site is
http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a248/clohse/Unknown%20Phot...
and my email address is Lohseinc@ yahoo.com

Thanks Chris Lohse

obituary William Edward Laird---- Baker city, Oregon

William Edward "Bill" Laird, 66, of Baker City, died April 16, 2005, at his home after a long bout with brain cancer.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Bill was born on Nov. 15, 1938, at Ketchikan, Alaska, to Ruth and Edward Laird, who was an engineer with the Lighthouse Service, now the Coast Guard. Bill's mother died when he was a baby and he was mostly raised by his stepmother, Anna Laura Laird. The family moved to California when Bill was 5, followed by several other moves around the country.

Bill attended high school at the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad, Calif., graduated in 1957 and served in the army in Germany from 1958-60.
Re: Moses Laird and Phoebe Latta Hanawalt

My info shows he married Flora Belle Popejoy in 1896. I don't have any other information on A.L. Laird. My husband is descended from Moses's first wife Hannah Parker. The Latta family is pretty well documented online. Moses was born in 1819 in Ireland and arrived in New York in 1837. Moses came to Ohio and eventually settled in Union County. He may have lived in Ross and Pickaway counties. Contact me lairdlin@aol.com to share more detailed information.

Dear Mark, I would like to know what part of the Laird family you belong to. My grandfather John Willis I never knew. He died before I was born. I was told by my father Clare Willis that Robert Willis was in the Civil War and all of his Civil war things were given to the Laird family. I would like to know if there is any civil war photographs any one from the Laird family may have. I don't know how to get in touch with any of the Lairds. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it. Vicki Willis Scribner You can email me directly at scribrace@yahoo.com

Hi, I obviously stopped coming here to see if there were any replies. Now, here it is 2009 and I see that we have a long lost relative. Granville is 82 now and the last of that family of 4. His sister, Margie past about 4 years ago. It is a great bunch. Lots of stories. Thank you for posting. I will tell my dad about you. He is in Oklahoma now living in his mother-in-law's old house. Thanks for the care and concern about the bible. It really would mean a great deal to our family if it were found.
