I would be William J Lakins gr gr grandaughter. William had Raymond with Margaret, and Raymond married Lucille Alvey in Louisville KY in March 1937. They had Margaret Catherine Lakin, William Jack Lakin and JoAnn Lakin. William Jack, born in 1940 is my father. He had numerous children, I am the eldest. I would love to have info on the elder William Jack Lakin, as I know nothing about him other than Raymond had a 1/2 brother who was younger, and a sister, Dorothy Mae, who lived in Washington Co. Indiana.

I have easy access to census records, so below are the LAKIN men (who were on the 1830 census in Ohio per your e-mail), who are on the 1840 census with their family breakdown by age.

1840 Census breakdown:
1st columm = Males under 5
2nd column = Males 5-10
3rd column = Males 10-15
4th column = Males 15-20
5th column = Males 20-30
6th column = Males 30-40
7th column = Males 40-50
8th column = Males 50-60
9th column = Males 60-70
etc
and AFTER the comma, females are listed in the same order

SO
Joseph Lakin--there was no one by this name in OH on 1840 Census Index

Joseph Lakin in Clay, Hamilton Co., IN
000001, 02001
= 1 male 30-40
2 females 5-10
1 female 20-30

Joseph P. Lakin in Boston, Ward 12, Suffolk Co., MA
000001,010001
= 1 male 30-40
1 female 5-10
1 female 30-40

John Lakin Monroe, Clermont Co., OH
2110001,200001 =
2 males under 5
etc
and
2 females under 5
1 female 30-40

John P.Lakin Monroe, Clermont Co., OH
10001,00001
so this family has no females under 20

Wm P. Lakin Monroe, Clermont Co., OH
210002, 10002001
so this family has one female under 5

W. Lakin Clinton, Franklin Co., OH
210002,10002001
so this family has one female under 5

Wm. A.
Re: Matilda Lakin Parents or Siblings in Ohio

This is a long shot, but assuming that Matilda's parents were in Ohio at the time of the 1830 census, a year before she was born, there are 5 LAKIN Heads of Household in the 1830 Ohio index:

Joseph Lakin Franklin, Clermont, Ohio
Joseph Lakin Franklin, Clermont, Ohio
John Lakin Point Pleasant, Clermont, Ohio
Wm P Lakin Point Pleasant, Clermont, Ohio
Daniel Lakin Rush Creek, Fairfield, Ohio

If you have an idea as to which county she was born in, one of these men might be her father.

The 1840 census index shows 10 LAKIN Heads of Household in Ohio.

Benjamin Lakin Monroe, Clermont, Ohio
Benjamin Lakin Monroe, Clermont, Ohio
Daniel Lakin Clinton, Franklin, Ohio
John Lakin Monroe, Clermont, Ohio
John P Lakin Monroe, Clermont, Ohio
Thomas Lakin Freeport, Harrison, Ohio
Thomas N Lakin West Carlisle, Coshocton, Ohio
W Lakin Clinton, Franklin, Ohio
William A Lakin West Carlisle, Coshocton, Ohio
Wm P Lakin Monroe, Clermont, Ohio

You could compare and check names from the 1830 index to see which family had a female in the age 5 to 10 column in 1840. It might help narrow down who her father was.

Robert or Henry LAKIN in Ilinois

Have been unable to determine anything on a Robert Lakin. He was in our lineage married to Louise/Louisa Ellen Pease. Found marriage records for a Henry Lakins, maried Louisa Vannesdall in 1866. Ellen, according to family tales, was married 7 times. Was wondering if you have anything on either of these names, or if anything on combination of names, like Henry Robert, or Robert Henry Lakins. Thanks for your time.

Aloha Harvey-

I will ask my father which of his relatives went to California. I know that some of them were there and that is why my Dad suspects that they could have been distant cousins. My Dad's family tree has roots to Wisconsin and Illinois and I will check on this.
Several years ago, I was contacted by a woman living in St. Petersburg, FL. She was a descendant of Calvin Harris Lakin. I lost her name and phone number. If she would like to contact me at lessiejo@hotmail.com I still live in Largo, FL. Also, I believe I had been in touch with a few others, but I had some medical emergencies and lost a lot of my lists. I would like to correspond with descendents of Calvin Harris Lakin. Luessa Lakin was my great-grandmother and I am named after her (her nickname).
I have DAR application papers from my grandmother and other detailed information. Willing to share anything I have. I am trying to figure out how to post copies on line. Does anyone have a Lakin website? LessieJo

Emily-
Thanks so much for writing. I am trying to find your email address. Everything you wrote makes sense. Matter of fact my grandfather was named Cyrus Lakin after Cyrus Hills. The Lakins lived 1/2 mile east and 1/2 mile south of the Hills farm on the east side. The school all the kids went to was on the mile corner east of Hills and North of Lakins. I have also seen news items from Ill. tying the families together. There is so much I would like to talk to you about. Including friends in Santa Barbara or near and relatives in California near Santa Barbara. I have never been to the Cyrus Hills cemetery, but plan to go soon. My gggrandfather Josiah is buried there as is my ggrandfather Henry. Also Mary and some others. I am sure they were friends and maybe related. My email is now hlakin@joplin.com. Hope you can contact me. Thanks again
Harvey L.
Cyrus Hills Cemetery

My grgrgrandfather was the Cyrus Hills who donated an part of his farm for the cemetery named Cyrus Hills cemetery. Have you ever been there? It is a realitvely small cemetery and most buried there are related or good friends?
I thought you might be interested to know that the Hills family, including Cyrus came from Belchertown, Hampshire Co, MA around 1843 to Lamoille, Bureau Co, IL. Previously they had been in Palmer, MA. Cyrus Hills wife was buried in the C. Hills Cemetery in 1856, and her maiden name was Olds.
It's very possible that your Lakin was close to Cyrus Hills and may, therefore, have come from Belchertown also. Does any of this make sense to you?
Emily Hills Aasted, in Santa Barbara, CA

I have hit so many dead ends looking for one particular person. I have been searching for NAOMA F. LAKIN born abt 1914 in Nebraska. She was listed in the 1920 Hamilton CO NE census living with her step father Arthur Matheson and her mother Elsie A. Elsie was married to my great uncle Leonard L. Lakin and divorced sometime before 1920. Her maiden name was GUARD. I beleive Naoma is my great uncle Leonard's daughter that we didn't know exsited. Naoma and her mother disappear between 1920 and 1930, she is not listed anywhere that I can find on the 1930 census. I did find Elsie's new husband but he remarried. Can anyone please help me?? The state has been no help at all....

Thank you!
Lisa

Parnell LAKIN -- 1700s Maryland

I would very much appreciate any information on Parnell Lakin, sometimes referred to as Margaret Parnell Lakin. Parnell married Henry Snowden in the early 1700's and shortly after he died, she married George Fee in 1725 or 1726, possibly in Queen Anne County, Maryland.

Since George and Parnell's daughter Elizabeth Fee married Joseph Lakin, the son of Abraham Lakin I, Parnell would probably be the same generation as Abraham Lakin I. Could she be a sister or cousin to Abraham Lakin I?

The name Parnell is not found in the 34 page THE LAKINS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND by Ralph Fraley Martz. Perhaps her name can be found in a Lakin Family Bible? Any information on Parnell would be greatly appreciated. TomFee3@aol.com

Hi Lisa,

I searched Ancestry, HeritageQuest, NewspaperArchive.com, and various genweb sites and didn't find anything.

Have you tried tracing the rest of Elsie's Guard family? She had eight siblings listed in the 1910 census: perhaps one of their descendants can help you. You might try posting a query on the Hamilton County, Nebraska, bulletin board or on the Hamilton County, NE, genweb site.

I married into a large Oregon Lakin family, but haven't done much research yet. LeRoy Selwin Lakin was my grandfather-in-law. If you find a connection, let me know!

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the response. Not sure where I got 1866 from, it should be 1844. He was born 1813 in Jersey (assume this is correct). There were 2 children, Mary Ann Coombs Lakin & Susan Lakin. Mary Ann was married in Jersey 1866 (there's the date!) to a William John Williams (b. Portsea 1836) and they emigrated to Australia around 1873. They had 11 children.

Regards,

...Tony
