Re: Lally/Ryan Ancestry

Hello,

My name is Melissa. My aunt recently made a trip to PA and went to several cemeteries to place flowers at the grave sides of several of our Ryan family members. She noticed a grave that seemed to be off by itself the name on the marker was Mary Lally Ryan. Thinking that we may somehow be related, she took a photograph of the grave marker. The death year that you have is the same as the one in the photograph (1938). We also have family hailing from Galway Ireland. If you look at the birth year you have listed for Mary vs. the year that her first child was born, you will see that she would have been about 7 years old when she first gave birth... must be all those dates that jumble around and confuse the heck out of us when we are on a mad search for information.

The grave markers reads:

Mary Lally Ryan
DOB: May 15, 1853
DOD: February 6, 1938

If you would like more information, please e-mail me directly at TheRitterbandS@msn.com

Re: Obit. LALLY, BRIAN STEWART

Here was a standup guy with a giant heart! When I was but 19 years old, Brian took me under his wing and taught me 6-step sugar chemistry. I was but a meager Production Assistant, a former male secretary just off the Interstate Highway from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, but Brian encouraged me and helped me grow a job into a career. Now, after 20 years, I look back and realize how Brian's guiding words and patient manner cleared the path for my career to blossom. We worked together for about 11 years. Many a happy coffee break and lunch we spent together at CalBiochem in the California sun, daydreaming and planning our weekends and holidays. He talked with open tenderness about his beloved Janet and the things they would do together. Brian drove this cool yellow Camaro, a '67 I think, and man did it scream! Of course, he could have a temper and a disagreement sometimes if he thought he was right! But everyone at work liked Brian, he was talented, motivated and hard-working. I enjoyed watching Chargers games, first in the Ocean Beach and then in the Pacific Beach home of Brian and Janet, always gracious hosts eager to share their time and good spirits. I also got to visit Brian at Ivac, showing off his pride and joy, their electron microscope. I still have beautiful pictures of a fly's eye, and remember his enthusiasm as he gave me the 10-cent tour of the lab. You cannot contain a man in a paragraph, and of course there is always much more to tell from then, and you hope to share from now. I lost contact with Brian, and I didn't follow up on a lunch date to be planned with Brian and one of his friends, and also a great mentor of mine, Greg. I'd give up much of my treasure now to spend another Saturday afternoon with Brian, introducing my wife and daughters, eating BBQ and telling him how much his help and kindness have rewarded me,and also my family. But that's in God's hands now, and I'll just have to wait for that sunny day to shake his hand again, and hear him say, "Kid, I told you you could do it!", "Sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll!", and "Let's put on some Doors and hang out!", or "You met Phil Rivers?!". That always was, and ALWAYS will be my (our) Brian!

May you grow in God's love and service,
Until we meet again my brother,
Chip Ross

James Judge and had a daughter in 1850. I do not know much more about Margaret Lally but the daughter did marry into the Kenny family.

It's said the daughter, Mary Judge, was orphaned when she was an infant. She survived the fire when she was thrown from an upstairs bedroom to someone on the ground (or into a snow bank). I do not know if Margaret Lally was her mother or adoptive mother.

Is this what you have? Especially curious to know the year of detah on M Lally.

Lally or Lalley of Ahascragh Galway

My great-grandfather was PATRICK LALLY a son of Michaelem or Michael LALLY and MARY TANZEY.

Patrick was born at "Shralooker" which was a small property situated on the Suck River just outside Ahascragh in November 1853.The landlord of the property at the time when Patrick was born was Sir William Moss Mahon. Patrick eventually came to Australia in early January 1876 but that is another story.

Patrick's parents Michael and Mary had been married in Roscommon in December 1842. I believe that they had thirteen children eight of whom survived to adulthood. There were six sons and two daughters who reached adulthood.

Their sons were Malachi(who was born in Roscommon on October 25th 1843), John, Michael, James, William and Patrick (my GGF) who was born in November 1853. The two daughters were Kate,(later Millar) and Moira(later McLoghlin).

Patrick's grandfather and Michael's father was Malachi Lally who had married a lady by the name of Cosgrove. I do not know her Christian name.

Apart from their son Michael who was Patrick's father I believe that Malachi and his wife had a number of other children. These included Peter, Thomas, James, Nancy Burns and Mary Coyne. Peter was a sponsor at Patrick's baptism with Mary Kean. There is a mention that Nancy Burns/Byrnes was at a later date in Jersy city in the USA.

From what information I have I believe that Patrick's brothers James and Michael may have stayed in Ahascragh but Patrick and his father Michael removed to Hartford USA in 1865. This would have been shortly after Patrick's youngest sister Honor was born in Ahascragh on March 8th 1865. I do not know if Honor survived or if she went to America but from the information in my posession I do not believe that she reached adulthood.

The paper that I have says that Patrick and his father left Ireland in 1865 for Hartford and that "Uncle" Peter was at Derrycheel nearby. I don't know where Derrycheel is and whether it is near Ahascragh or near Hartford. Any help would be appreciated.

Uncle Tom (Patrick's father's brother) was also in America so I am assuming that the family in the usual Irish manner gradually migrated to America and presumably to the Hartford area.

I believe that Patrick's brother Michael stayed in Ahascragh and was a grocer/baker by trade. His brother James is said to have also been "living a few miles away" and I am presuming that to be Ahascragh.

PATRICK left New Bedford USA in November 1875 for Melbourne.

Can anyone help?

You'll need access to one of the LDS family history centers to order and view the film. Go to familysearch.org and at the bottom of the screen, in the box labeled Find a Family History Center, enter your state, province, or country. You'll then get a list of centers in your area. In the United States, some town libraries are also family history centers and can get the films. If you need more information, e-mail me directly.

Diane
dlculhane@cs.com

Ballyshannon is in Inishmacsaint parish in Co. Donegal, the RC records of which are on LDS film 979704, item 6. The film covers 1848-1880, so you should be able to find Francis's family. You might also post inquiries on the Donegal mailing list and message board in case someone else is researching the family.

Diane (my Lallys from Mayo)

Michelle, I am sorry to be so tardy posting this. I have been away from my research for a time. The John Hugh Lally I wrote about was married to a woman with the surname Painter, given name will not come to me at the moment. They had no children and actually lived in Minneapolis MN. They were buried in Rockford as her family had burial space there. Wish I could have been of help to you.

Gena

In response to your note... I don't think there's any connection here. My father Edwin Joseph was born in 1899 in Cambridge, Mass, and moved to California five years later.
Hi, my Lally family was Lalli until around 1905. I don't know any siblings of Antonio Lalli, Anthony Lally. Family lore says he had brothers but they would have been born in the late 1800's. One is rumored to have lived in New England. He is a tough one! I doubt there is a connection, but one never knows!!

He married Ellen in 1872 ( I have their marriage register records. William's parent were Chuck and Kato. I haven't been able to find anything other than this.

Hi everyone

I am looking for a William Lally who was assaulted by my GG Grandfather Charles Collard. Also invovlved was Thomas Kidner. Charles and Thomas were tried and convicted of the assualt at the Somerset Assizis in 1832

A search of the Felons Register of Ilchester Goal states that "Charles Collard a shoemaker aged 21, was convicted at the Assizes 13 August (18)32 of assaulting William Lally and stealing four pairs of stockings from him. He and his accomplice Thomas Kidner, a 17 year old shoemaker, was sentenced to death, but Collard's sentence was commuted to transportation for life, and he was sent to the hulk Discovery at Woolwich on 18 September to await transportation. Kidner was also reprieved and sentenced to two years hard labour. Collard had at least one previous conviction, having been sentenced at the Sessions of 13 July 1829 to a whipping and two months imprisonment in Wilton goal, Taunton for stealing two pairs of shoes."

Has anyone come across this particular William Lally in their investigations

Bill
Brunswick Victoria

His father's name was Patrick but would have been born (I am guessing) maybe in the 1840's but I don't know where all of my family settled around the upstate New York, PA, CT areas. I also found a Catherine and Michael Lally that are buried in Watervliet Cemetary in Upstate New York are those the same. If you find anything else let me know I have been hitting a brick wall for some time.

Lally Column inventor relation

My great Grandmother Bridget Lally was born around 1865 and was married to Thomas Thornton in Ireland. She emigrated to the US (Boston) around 1886 (Thomas emigrated 7 years before her). Her father was John Lally and her mother was Bridgit (Lyons) Lally. I was told that she was related to John Lally of the Lally Column invention. I know that my grandfather John Thornton was the bookkeeper for the Lally Column Company in Boston. I am trying to find a link to John Lally so that I may pinpoint where in Ireland Thomas Thornton and Bridget Lally came from. I think she may be a cousin of the Lally Column inventor. I am assuming that they were from somewhere in Galway as that is where most Thornton's and Lally's were found. Any info that anyone has would be appreciated.

Tom

Re: Lallys in Massachusetts

Hi from Dottie Guinan in Boston who has been researching Guinan name. There were a few Lallys witnessing Guinan births, marriages, etc. in Boston, and I just found one Lally name who I'm unsure if connection exists.

It was death of Annie J. Lally on 2/5/1892 at 4 months. from South Boston. Father was Thomas J. Lally, Mother Annie Walpole.

Passing this along in case it helps. Lots of Moore Parish, Co. Roscommon neighbors in the Rosbury MA area.
Re: Lallys in Massachusetts

My Lally branch in the U.S. started with my g-g-grandparents, Patrick (ca. 1805-1899) and Mary (O'Malley) Lally (ca. 1822-1901). They emigrated from Co. Mayo to Philadelphia in 1847, lived for a few years in Massachusetts, then Chatauqua Co., New York ending up in Lee County, Illinois. I think Co. Roscommon was once part of Co. Mayo.

Their children were Patrick (b. 1840 in Ireland), Bridget (my g-grandmother b. 1846 in Ireland), Kate (b. 1854 - possibly in MA), Martin (b. Chatauqua Co in 1856), John (b. 1858), William (b. 1860), Mary (b. 1861), Austin (b. 1863), and Edward (b. 1864). The youngest five were born in Stephenson Co. and Lee Co. Illinois.

I have no information about Patrick or Mary's siblings or parents. I thought the first name of Austin may be a way to trace connections since it's relatively unusual (so I thought). It's common enough to be of little help, unfortunately. I do have names and dates of the Lally descendents that I would be happy to share.
