I don't know much about the Lama geneology but I hope to connect with relatives. I'm from the Philippines my father is Florencio Lama. My siblings are Evangeline and Peter Josef. I was born September 1961. It's really nice to know that there are other Lama's out there. Wish to hear from the others soon. Thanks,Yogie Lama-Cabigao

I have no info on Andrew's parents or where they might be from. Hope to get to Shenandoah County, Va someday to do some hands on research. I spent 2 days in Abingdon, Washington County, Va researching the Lammey's there but could not find a tie to our Andrew. Many of the settlers there were Scott-Irish.

I live in Florida now...probably will not be getting to Ohio this year, but you never know.

Hello, & thanks for all the info. What I am trying to find out is what country did the Lamey's Lammas come from?? Have you got any info on that?? Yes, the reunion is being held in Ohio on July 25th in Waynesburg, Oh just a short distance from Canton. Do you live in Ohio?? My mother & I have been researching so that we can put together something for the family so that they have a record of their ancestory. The only one left from my fathers generation in my immeadiet family is my Aunt Margaret. I will also see cousins that I have not seen since I was a kid. Would love it if you could come & maybe shead some more light on out ancestory, & about your side of the family. Janie

The 1850 census first led me to Andrew. This was before it was indexed, I looked at Hocking County one page at a time. Later I found his probate papers in the Hocking County, Ohio Courthouse Annex in which some of his children was mentioned. (The older Hiram's is there also.) I found his and his wife Rachael's grave in Groves Cemetery in Starr Township, Hocking County.

In the 1860 census his widow Rachael was listed as Lamma. It seems some children went with Lama, some with Lamma and at least one with Lamey.

The oldest record I can find for Andrew Lamey and Rachael (Ellinger) is a listing for their marriage on 10/28/1818 in Shenandoah County, VA.

I'm guessing the reunion is being held in the Akron-Canton area or around Marietta.

Depends on which Hiram you are referring to... Hiram D, Grover's half brother is not. I have Grover's father as John W Lama (abt 1829-1887) and his father as Andrew Lamey (abt 1787-1851)...I am not 100% sure of this relationship. Perhaps you have further info. Andrew was my gg grandfather. My line is through his son Hiram Gard Lama (1835-1905), his son also Hiram Gard Lama (1871-1944), his son...my father.

My information stopped at Oscar until I saw your father and your uncle in the SS death index and then found their obits.

I was out in Kingman visiting a grandson a few years ago, but didn't know about any other relatives then.

According to my relationship calculator, we are 3C1R.

I had her death in 1943 but don't know where I got that...have to check when I get home. One of her brothers was my grandfather.
Thank you so much for the links to the wonderful pictures of the tombstones, I've been out to the Gibsonville Cemetery just didn't know about this family yet. I know my Woodards are also buried in Starr Twp. Hocking County in I believe the Morse Chapel Cemetery way up on a hill that is on private property but they will let you go up there and it is very well maintained. My husband and I were in Greenlawn Cemetery here in Nelsonville riding our bikes and noticed a couple of Lama tombstones and wondered if they were related so I started digging again into this family line.

Hiram Gard and Catherine Lama were my great grandparents through their son Hiram Gard ( I have not come across them ever using senior and junior). I have no proof but using the census it looks like Catherine's parents were James (B abt 1799-PA) and Rosanna (B abt 1797- NY) Tracy, spelling varies.

Two of William Cooper Woodard's great grandchildren married Lama siblings.

Which of the children do you and your husband descend from?

Lama that married Catherine Tracey, this is my husbands side of the family I have found them in the census in Starr Twp and then in Marion Twp. in 1870. Does anyone know anything about the Trac(e)y family? I am stumped on this one. I am related to the William Woodard Family that is living next to the Lama family in the 1850 & 1860 Census and my husband is related to the Lama's!!!

family

Diane,
My father also moved from Latvia to New Jersey at or around the same time period. I have so little information about him because he left Latvia at a very turbulent time. His mother and brother remained in Latvia. We were not able to stay in touch with any family members because my father was an officer in the U.S.M.C. My father's brother was an officer in the Russian army (air force). He later became an avid communist and was even a guard at Stalin's tomb.My mother seems to think that he is now involved with the Russian mob. I really don't know much. I do not even know the name of my father's brother, or the name of my grandmother. I do know that they came from Riga Latvia. My father attended Carlisle Millitary School in SC, where he net my mother. He then went to Monmouth College in NJ, and got his Masters from UNC Chapel Hill. This was all prior to his leaving for Vietnam. He was then killed before I was born. My mother was still pregnant with me when he died. My mom has referred to my grandfather as Frank, but I'm sure that was a nickname given to him in the US. Again, my father's name was Ivars Lama. If you find out any more information, please get back to me.I would love to find out more about my family. It seems more than coincidental that there are more than one set of Lamas that came to NJ from Latvia at the same time.
Thank you,
Jon Radcliffe

Hi I was facinated by your posting. I am not sure if we are related but my father was born Guntis Lama in Jargava Latvia. His fathers name was Karlis Lama and his uncles name was Ansis Lama and his Sisters name is Ruta Lama. They moved to New Jersey in the 1940s. I had to reply because I never come across anyone with the same last name not to mention someone else who knows about Latvia. A neat twist to all of this is that I named my oldest son Jonathan...spelling the same as yours!!! Looking forward to hearing from you....Dianne

I was beginning to think nobody was going to use this board.

Samuel Hayes Lama was your great grand uncle. Hiram Gard Lama (Jr-never seen him listed as such, but his father had the same name) was your great grandfather. He is buried in Amanda Township Cemetery. Hiram Gard Lama senior is buried in the small cemetery in Gibisonville.

I don't think we are from Italy...the French-German border area is probably a better bet but I don't have any source for this. This first Lama I can find...Andrew Lamey...was born in Virginia abt 1788 according to the 1850 census.

Myrtle was an VanCurren. I don't think any Burgoons or Featherolfs are in our direct bloodline but there are plenty of marriages involving them.

Welcome to the board

Lama Family Board

I have volunteered to be the administrator for the Lama Board.

I have been researching the Lama Family since I retired about 3 years ago. Most of my Lama family have been residing in southeastern Ohio for the last 150 years. Of course the spelling has varied a bit. My gg grandfather appears to be Andrew Lamey (born in Va) living in Hocking County at the 1850 Census. His children went with Lama, Lamma and Lamey for the surname. Other direct lines are Seymour and Trac(e)y. Peripheral Lines include Burgoon, Dupler, Eveland, Fetherolf, Jadwin, Poling, Shupe, and Woodard.

I would like to hear from you Lama researchers out there!

Try www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/ There is a Grover Lama listed there...Died 1933.

None of the names you listed show up in my information...wonder if they might be related to brothers of Hiram Gard Lama, born 1835? I have no info on any siblings or parents for him. So far he is at the top of my tree.

Thanks for the two replies. You have noticed that Lamey, Lamma and Lama seems to be the most common spellings. The 1860 census had Lamma for Rachael. Hiram Gard appearently ended up using Lama (and it was spelled Lama on his and Catherine's tombstone) See:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/tombpics/hocking/laurel...

Rod,

I saw your inquiry and just had to reply. I am your cousin Diane, daughter of Earl (Bros) and Ethel Culp. I have been doing some genealogy research on mom's side of the family (Linn) and also on dad's side (Culp). I do have some information on names and dates of Culp's, Vorhees, and some Chilcote. My mom's mother was a Chilcote - Margaret (Chilcote) Linn. Each time I return to Ohio (I'm living in Orlando FL) I always visit the Pine Grove Cemetery and drive by Grandma and Grandpa Linn's and Grandma and Grandpa Culps.
Do you remember Mabel's store down the road before you get to Old Man's Cave? Anyway, e-mail me if you get the chance and I will try to gather some info for you.
Also, you may try to get in touch with our Aunt Francis Cox. She is living in Logan. My brother, Junior and wife Jackie live in Lancaster. Of course, I'm sure you remember Ruth passed away about six years ago.
E-mail me when you can.

They had two children, Paul Harry (b sep 22, 1889) and Rose May (b. 15 May 1885). Paul eventually moved to Lake Linden, Michigan where my Father, John Ellsworth was born. Henrietta had five siblings, Mary, Genoa, Rosella, Leanore, and John.
Her parents were Paul Lama (b. 1833) and Mary Lama (b.1834).
Does anyone have any conncections to these people?

I was born to Orval Lama, in Salem, Oregon in 1949. Dad's father was John Lama. John and Orval moved to Salem in the early 1930's as I recall (I have much more info at home - I'm at our house boat right now). I believe John's brother was Bill. My dad was in the car business. The records we have found indicate that John's father came Copenhagen in the early1900's, arriving in New York.

My wife and I now live in West Linn, Oregon, just south of Portland. My cell phone number is 503-849-7014. My home phone us 503-650-0545. This sounds interesting - call or e-mail !
Thanks !
