Hi Bruce,
Sorry if I have got through otherwise - this posting of yours was more recent (2006) - so thought I would give it a try.

I am descended from Margaret Black - until I read your brief entry, I was certain she was daughter of John Black & Mgt Fleming.

1851 census - 55 Union Place, Bridge of Allan

Charles Rutherford, Head, single, age 36yrs, Apothecary, born Lecropt
Margaret Black, Mother, age 81yrs, widow, born Kilmarnock, Ayr
Agnes Rutherford, sister, age 41yrs, single, born Lecropt
Gilbert Farie, age 19yrs, single, Apothecaries Shopman, born Lanark
Jane Barron, Servant, born Perthshire
William Helibrous, Visitor, age 22yrs, Broker from England.

LETTER WITH DETAILS OF MARGARET BLACK
WRITTEN BY DANIEL MACNEILL WATSON:
Writing about the origins of his wife Margaret Baird's family
Extract given to me by Don Watson.

"As you know, mother was born in Bridge of Allan in 1834. Her father, Adam Baird, Corn Miller of Bridge of Allan, in the same year, 1834, entered into the ownership of Dunblane Corn Mill. Her mother, Susan Rutherford, died in 1840, and her father married a second time, Jean Dawson, in March 1842. Then on the Bard side, Grandfather was also a Miller in Bridge of Allan, as far as we know, all his life. His wife was Margaret Cairns, who after having three sons and three daughters died. His second wife was Janet Galbraith, a native of Campsie. Then, the Grandfather on the Mother's side was David Rutherford, who was over 50 years manager of the Keirfield Works, and one discovery I have just made within the last 3/4 months is that he was a good Greek and Hebrew scholar, and amongst other things translated the whole of the Psalms of David from the Hebrew and set them to the tunes of Old Scotch Ballads. I have got the loan of the Manuscript of this in my possession at the present time, beautifully written by your mother's Aunt Agnes Carter. The Grandmother belonged to Mauchline, her name was Margaret Black. Her sister, Betty Black, one of Burn's six Mauchline Belle's, came to live in the Bridge of Allan District, and got married to John Stewart, their house being at Alva, on the Banks of the Devon. Burn's visited her repeatedly, and on his visits seemed to get inspiration from the whole surroundings of the district, as witnessed in the song "Allan Water"

"By Allan's streams I chanced to roam
Whilst Phoebus sank behind Ben Leddi;
The wind were whipering through the Groves,
The yellow Corn was waving ready."

and so on.

Another of his songs on the same, also refers to her, called
ON THE BANKS OF THE DEVON:

"How pleasant the banks of the clear winding Devon,
With green spreading bushes and flowers blooming fair,
But the bonniest flower on the banks of the Devon
Was once a sweet Bud on the Braes of the Ayr."

And then followed another, his farewll to Fair Eliza when he anticipated leaving to go to Jamaica:

"From theee Eliza I must go,
And from my native shore;
The Cruel Fates between us throw
A boundless ocean's roar."

Grandfather and Grandmother Rutherford both lived to a good old age, over 80, one we know, lived to be 86. He was an Elder in Lecropt Church and was the means of introducing the first teacher for the young in the Village, and one peculiarity was that he, along with another, agreed to feed the teacher 2/3 days each alternately the teacher's small pecuniary salary.

Best wishes,
Peter Gordon
Bridge of Allan.
My grandfather came to Canada around 1912/1913. He married Sarah Jean Pletch (from Ireland) and they had Grace, Marnie, Mary Jean (my mother), John and Colleen. My grandfather has passed away, but Aunt Marg and Uncle Sid still live in Toronto, Ont. Canada.

Gavin Lambies family were not striclty undertakers. His father John Lambie was in partnership with someone called Moore and then ran a joinery business which meant they probably built coffins. My mother is 82 but still completely lucid about the past. I am the granddaughter of Gavin Lambies brother Sidney.

I would love to share any and all information that I have. My work email is gallowayli@butte.edu. I got most of the information that I have from a bible that was brought by my husbands grandmother (Mary A. Lambie Galloway). There is one page that list the family members. Would you like a copy?

Do you have any information beyond James and Matilda Butler Lambie? birth dates, death dates, marriages etc. Do you know if they were from Scotland or Ireland? I have heard conflicting stories. Thank you Linda

Hi Matthew
A shot in the dark. My late grandmother born 1876 had a brother Tom Lambie who went to live in England - I don't know where but I get the impression it was the northern half. My mother remembers him visiting them on his motor-bike sometime in the 1920's. In the unlikely event that this turns out to be your man he was probably born about 1880 and I have a fair amount of info on his ancestry.

Hope this may be of some use.
Bob clement

Lambie from Ayrshire- Artist 1919

I am seeking any information on my grandfather Lambie - not necessarily that surname. He married - or not - my grandmother and my father was born in 1919 in Kent. My fathers name is frederick and I think this was also my grandfathers name. All I know is that he lived in Ayrshire, was a landowner, an artist and may have died in the war. His sisters travelled to Kent to take my father back to Scotland but my grandmother refused. This is all the information I have.

Alice Maud COLGATE m James LAMBIE 1914

This is sort of a shot in the dark....I am just beginning some family research. My grandfather was born Claude R. Colgate, but changed his name later to Howard. His family was split up in the early 1900's when his dad Joseph N.H. Colgate died. Since he was the baby, he stayed with his mother, Lucy, while his siblings went???? I have found a record of one of the sisters, Alice Maud or Maud Alice, married to James Lambie in 1914. If you know anything about this family...I would LOVE to hear from you! can email me at seelke@quixnet.net. Thanks!

I also know that John Lambie married Mary Carracher 25th December 1877.

William also had a brother John.

Mary was born abt. 1856 and died in New Monkland at the age of 79 in 1935.

John was the son of John Lammie and Helen Twigg. You have to watch for the change in spelling here as literacy was not great in those days.

John & Helen were married 27 January 1850 in Barony.

I have some of these certificates so email me if you want copies.

Regards,

Paul

Lambie - Glasgow

My Lambie connection is also with Glasgow (and Ayrshire), but I have no link as yet with Jane Lambie. However, Jane was married to John Napier 7th June 1866 at Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland.
More info should be readily available at the Scottish Origins website.
