Through my search for my grandfather I have determined that Marie was his mother. I have Marie Adelaide Azilda Lamirand(e) married to a Francois Xavier Gravelle. Francois's birth abt 1852, Quebec; Marie's birth abt 1849, Quebec. My mother was always told that she was of Indian decent but I'm lost as to where or how to find this information. I am new at researching so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

We found a picture of twins, on the back it says, "These are my babies, Mrs. Floyd Lemerand". Would you know who this could be? Philomene (Bondy) Lemerand was Marion's great-aunt.
Pat Vasher

King Henry IV died 1610, assassinated in Paris, 14 May, but the family of Pierre seems to have been enobled long before his birth. Henry was the first of the Bourbon Kings, and was the first to say he wanted a "chicken every Sunday" for the people. (And to think they have always credited that to FDR as an original statement.)
He was a Protestant, forced to convert to Catholicism in order to gain the throne.

From the "History of Louiseville" translation.
I won't give the complete translation as it is too long, but it does state
that: 1) Pierre was the eldest son of a Protestant family enobled by King Henry IV. 2) "Besides the founder of Louiseville, Charles du Jay, Lord of Manereuil, we find in it's (Louiseville's history), only one family possessing the title of nobility. It is that of Dulignon-Chevalier-Lamirande." 3) "The Canadian ancestor is Pierre Dulignon, knight, coming from de la Mirande, near La Rochefoucauld in the dicese of Angouleme".

Ron, Where did you find the "proof" that Pierre was knighted by King Henry IV? Pierre was born in 1655/56, or at least baptized at that time. King Henry IV, I think, died in 1610. During Pierre's time Louis XIV was king. One of the main reasons Pierre may have come to North America in 1685 was the dissolution of the Treaty of Nantes by King Louis XIV, Pierre was baptized in a Huguenot temple.

I have heard that one of Pierre's ancsetors were enobled by a French king. But so far have seen no proof of this.

Hi Floyd,

Yes, I still have all the information that you sent to me. But please look at the date of birth that I gave for this Marie Jospehe. If she was born in August of 1767, how could she have possibly married in 1769? I know that many of the girls were married early, but not at two (2) years of age.

In everything I have seen names run many times through a family and the community. So it is not unreasonable to think that there were very many girls by this name.

According to Jetté (Dictionnaire des familles quebecoises p. 379/380), the first of the Dulignon/Lamirande/Chevalier in Canada is Jean Dulignon, sieur de la Mirande (son of Élie and Marthe Paquet) married to Marie Testard ib 1684, Montréal. He had one son, Pierre married in 1703 at Louiseville with Marguerite Gerlaise from whom he had 11 children born between 1705 and 1729.

On the other hand, other authors believe that Pierre is not the son but the brother of Jean, born in 1656 - which would make him 73 at the time of the birth of his last child, in 1729.
Any information or comments ?
c.

C
Hi Ed..I have some info you might be interested in. My great-grandfather was Arthur Joseph Lamirande born 5/26/1875 in Louiseville, Quebec. Children of Arthur are Arthur I (b. 6/20/1903) Viola (7/28/1906) and Cecilia (or Ceil-b 2/25/1909)
According to the internet, we are all distantly related!

Hello Arthur,

I am also researching the Dulignon de Lamirande
family. Some of us "cousins" have formed a Pierre
Dulignon De Lamirande Society. We have published
two (2) newsletters. We are trying to gather
all information about the family and have over
45 members to date. If you would like to join us
please send me an E-mail message, and I will
you added to our rolls. Thank you, Michael (Mike)
E. Van Wasshnova

gap in ancestral record

My grandfather Theordore Lamirande, b. Louisville, Quebec 1849, d. Holyoke, MA 1908.
M. Malvina Arbour (1854-1939). His parents were Theodore Lamirande and Louisa Hebert, dates uncertain but married in 1847 at Louisville, Quebec. Now: the question is: how does the earlier Theodore Lamirande connect with the "DuLignon de Lamirande" families of the 17th and 18th centuries in Quebec? For example: Theodore-Elie Dulignon de Lamirande, b. about 1752 in Louisville, Quebec. And Pierre Dulignon, Sieur de Lamirande, b. 1655 in France, d. 1736 at Riviere du Loup, Quebec.

Pierre and Jean/ brothers

Hi: the error you speak of is a common one. Have seen postings on Rootsweb that have Pierre as a son of Jean but born BEFORE Jean. More recently, baptismal records have been found in France to prove that Jean and Pierre are brothers, along with one other, another Theodore. They are posted at Fiche d'Origine, online.
Theodore Elie du Lignon, Sieur de La Mirande and Marthe Pacquet: Pierre Bap. Jan 20,1655 at the Protestant Temple, Le Rochefoucard, Charante, France.
Jean Theodore Bap: June 16,1657 same place.
Theodore Bap. Feb.26,1660. same place.
The spouses for Jean and Pierre I confirm with what you have. Jean came over about 12 years or so before Pierre. He was here first, but he is not Pierre's father. Hope this helps clear up the confusion. Even Tanguay got it wrong at first. Happy hunting and Sesason's Greetings. Debbie
