There are some Lana's on the 1895 Argentina Census. You can find them on this site:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?...

Just type in Lana in the last name field and Argentina in the country field.
Bette

The simple answer to your question is, "No". I went to the web site: www/familysearch.org for some clues and I was amazed to see the Lana name dispursed in many countries - from Europe, to South America, Central America and even the Phillipines. You will need to take a look yourself because some are shown in Argentina, too. Since Sicily was occupied by many countries over the course of history, perhaps the name has a Spanish origin. Who knows??? At any rate, since you are interested in your great-grandfather, it seems like you will need to do more research in Argentina to see if it takes you back to Sicily. I wish you good luck.
Bette

I now know from my father's birth certificate, which was hard to get, that my grand father was born in Argentina as well so now the question is whether i can trace back my great grand father and that would be the end of it. Do you know for sure where Lana comes originally from?

Regards,

There must be a way to find where your grandparents originated. Do you know if your grandparents were married before they went to Argentina? Do you know the maiden name of your grandmother? Was your father born in Argentina? If you mention their names, someone may be able to help. Do you know if your grandfather had any siblings?
Regards,
Bette

Hi Bette,

I thank you for the information. My father passed away ten years ago. I never met any family on my fathers behalf, apparently they were all in Argentina. But it puzzles me to know more about my grand parents and their real roots. Unfortunatelly I dont have any papers of them. The only thing I got is an old copy of my dad's birth certificate. It does not say where my grand parents were born. Many people moved from italy to Argentina long time ago so I guess this was the case of my grand parents.

thanks again I hope to find something else as my last name (LANA) doesnt seem to be very common here or 100% Italian either.

Regards,

Lana is the last name of my cousins. I do not know if they have any relatives in Argentina. Italy keeps very good records. So, I am sure, if your relatives were born there, there are probably records of their births, etc. The important thing to know is the name of the town they came from. The records are kept in the towns. If you find the name of the town, then you can see if there are microfilms available to rent from a Mormon Family History Library. Or you could write to the town to ask for extracts or a Stato di Famiglia. If you have any Lana relatives that immigrated to the USA, you may be able to find them on the Ellis Island site. Depending on the year of arrival, the manifests give some very interesting information and sometimes, even the town the immigrant was born in. So, the manifest is a valuable tool to use to find the name of the town, if you don't know it already.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Bette

The Lana name seems to still be evident in Sicily today.

http://gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/genera.html?cognome=&t=c...

I never got very far in the research of the Lana's (my cousin's family), but I do know they came from Valledolmo, Sicily and settled in Rochester, NY.

Bette

Hi. I have been tracing my family's roots back to Sicily.. and found that they are also from Canicatti. I wonder how close these two towns are...

It gets confusing since the Lana families seem to share the same first names. Thomas, if you'd like to compare, let me know.

Hello Betty, My name is Thomas Lauer. I have trace the name of Lana , back to sicily. A town called canicatti is where it shows my grandparents are from . For some reason or another the name Lana was latter changed to Lauer. It is a puzzle to me, but i understand in those days names where changed all the time? Both of my great grandparents where from the Palermo areas. Please write if you can make anything out of the name change.Thank you ,Tommy..
