LANCE LANCASTER
Funeral services were held Jan. 5 at St. John's Catholic Church in Herington for Lance Craig LANCASTER, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry LANCASTER of Herington.
Lance, a seventh grade student at the Herington Junior High, died unexpectedly Jan. 2 after suffering an asthmatic attack and apparent heart failure. He had become seriously ill at his home and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Herington Municipal Hospital after being rushed there by his parents.
He was born Feb. 4, 1964 in Herington.
He had been active in school and church activities.
For five years, he had won recognition in annual Local Punt, Pass & Kick Competition. He had claimed first place trophies in his age group the last four years, each time representing Herington in regional meets at Salina and McPherson.
Lance had been a billiard champion at the City recreation Center, played third base on his summer baseball team and played basketball in school. Because of illness, he was unable to participate in football.
He had once received a reading award in school for reading 123 books. He earned a special award as the best boy speller during the 1970-71 school year. He had received an honorable mention in a poster, essay and limerick contest sponsored in 1975 by the Dickinson County Soil Conservation District.
He had place second last year in "Superstar Competition" among sixth grade boys at the Herington Junior High.
Lance was treasurer of the Herington Junior High student Council.
He had received a certificate of achievement award in 1976 from the University of Kansas Reading Program for Children.
He was an altar boy at St. John's Catholic Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Fr. Larry Pierce officiated at the services.
Survivors include his parents and two sisters, Lisa and Lashell, of the home, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Craig LANCASTER of Minneapolis, Kansas, and Mrs. Lanora Shea of Miltonvale.
Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery with Donahue Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Classes at Herington Junior High were suspended for a half-day to allow students and teachers to attend the funeral.
The school has started a memorial fund in his memory. Contributions should be addressed to: Lance LANCASTER Memorial Fund c/o First national Bank of Herington, Herington, Kansas 67449.
